The endocarp of the fresh pea pod incubated with solution or suspension of agricultural fungicides, phytotoxic metabolites of plant pathogenic fungi formed the pea phytoalexin, pisatin. Among the compounds tested, cycloheximide, triazine, dichlone, phenyimercury acetate, UV degradation product of phenylmercury acetate, triphenyltin fungicides, and 3-hydroxy-5-methylisoxazole induced pisatin. Ophiobolin, a toxin from Cochliobolus mtyabeanus, and ascochitine, a toxic metabolite from Ascochyta fabae, also induced pisatin. The possibilities of the development of harmless plant disease control agents was discussed in relation- to the induced synthesis of phytoalexins

The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) serendipitously detected H2_2O JKa,Kc=102,993,6J_{Ka, Kc} = 10_{2,9} - 9_{3,6} emission at 321 GHz in NGC 1052. This is the first submillimeter maser detection in a radio galaxy and the most luminous 321-GHz H2_2O maser known to date with the isotropic luminosity of 1090 LL_{\odot}. The line profile consists of a broad velocity component with FWHM =208±12= 208 \pm 12 km s1^{-1} straddling the systemic velocity and a narrow component with FWHM =44±3= 44 \pm 3 km s1^{-1} blueshifted by 160 km s1^{-1}. The profile is significantly different from the known 22-GHz 61,652,36_{1,6} - 5_{2,3} maser which shows a broad profile redshifted by 193 km s1^{-1}. The submillimeter maser is spatially unresolved with a synthesized beam of 0.68×0.560^{\prime \prime}.68 \times 0^{\prime \prime}.56 and coincides with the continuum core position within 12 pc. These results indicate amplification of the continuum emission through high-temperature (>1000>1000 K) and dense (n(H2O)>104n({\rm H}_2{\rm O}) > 10^4 cm3^{-3}) molecular gas in front of the coreComment: 3 figures, Accepted for publication in Publications of Astronomical Society of Japa

Steady-state data acquisition method for LHD diagnostics

    Get PDF
The LHD experiment has gone through 5 campaign periods over the past 4 years, during which the diagnostics data continues to grow and the primary 28 measurements produce about 620 MB/shot in 150 shot/day 3-min cycles. In 2002, 30-min long-pulse experiments will be carried out in LHD, where real-time operations are indispensable for plasma measurements and data acquisition. The new scheme for utilizing conventional CAMAC digitizers in long-pulse experiments has been discussed and examined. As a result, in LHD, CAMACs will shift into 120?180 s cyclic operation, synchronized by the diagnostic timing system. The new CompactPCI-based digitizer frontend has performed about 84 MB/s continuous acquisition in benchmarks, and has been formulated with the conventional CAMAC system to make concurrent acquisitions

Intermittent parathyroid hormone 1-34 induces oxidation and deterioration of mineral and collagen quality in newly formed mandibular bone

Intermittent parathyroid hormone (PTH) administration is known to promote bone healing after surgical procedures. However, the mechanism and influence of PTH on the mineral and collagen quality of the jaw are not well understood. Most studies have focused on analyzing the bone density and microstructure of the mandible, and have insufficiently investigated its mineral and collagen quality. Oxidative stress activates osteoclasts, produces advanced glycation end products, and worsens mineral and collagen quality. We hypothesized that PTH induces oxidation and affects the mineral and collagen quality of newly formed mandibular bone. To test this, we examined the mineral and collagen quality of newly formed mandibular bone in rats administered PTH, and analyzed serum after intermittent PTH administration to examine the degree of oxidation. PTH administration reduced mineralization and worsened mineral and collagen quality in newly formed bone. In addition, total anti-oxidant capacity in serum was significantly decreased and the oxidative-INDEX was increased among PTH-treated compared to vehicle-treated rats, indicating serum oxidation. In conclusion, intermittent administration of PTH reduced mineral and collagen quality in newly formed mandibular bone. This effect may have been induced by oxidation

Angiostatic effects of corticosteroid on wound healing of the rabbit ear

Wound healing is a complex biologic process with initial inflammation, granulation tissue formation, and matrix remodeling. We observed the relation between angiostatic effects and corticosteroid administration time in the rabbit ear chamber. Angiogenesis in the chamber was studied using a microscope-television system. Two experiments were undertaken to represent the systemic and the topical administration of steroids. In experiment1, 10 mg of triamcinolone acetonide was injected three times intramuscularly (on the day of implantation of the chamber, and the 7th and 14th day after implantation). Vascularizationin this group was significantly delayed at the 7th, 14th, and 21st days but no difference from controls was observed in the size and density of vessels after its completion. In experiment2, 3 mg of triamcinolone acetonide was injected once into the skin adjacent to the chamber on the 10th day after installment of chambers or on the day of installment. In the former group, new vascular growth was delayed until the 21st day after installment. The hemorrhagic zone had narrowed and vascular dilation was observed. In the latter group, endothelial budding was delayed and vascular constriction occurred. New vascular growth was severely delayed and granulation filling of the chamber was not completed. These results suggest not only that the topical administration had the stronger inhibitory effect on neovascularization than the systemic administration but that the effect differed depending on the stage of wound healing. In view of this effect of this steroid, we should pay careful attention to the time when steroids are administered to patients

Resin splint as a new conservative treatment for ingrown toenails

    Get PDF
Several conservative as well as surgical methods are used for the treatment of ingrown toenails until date. The conservative methods are either based on nail splinting or on orthonyxia, but no methods employing both principles have been reported thus far. Moreover, surgical methods usually involve postoperative pain, prolonged wound healing and restricted activities of daily living. Therefore, considering the need of a simplified, non-invasive method, in this study, we applied a novel splint to treat patients with ingrown toenails and estimated the clinical efficacy as well as rate of recurrence following treatment. The splint is a plate made of resin that is attached to the lateral edge of the nail using a bandage. We studied 61 patients (19 men and 42 women ;mean age 36 years), with an average application duration of 9.3 months and an average follow-up period of 10 months in all patients. All patients experienced pain relief within a week of splint application and a decrease in the degree of nail deformity. Moreover, follow-up revealed a recurrence rate of 8.2%. Therefore, we believe that this new device is an excellent conservative treatment method for patients with ingrown toenails

Frequent p53 Accumulation in the Chronically Sun-Exposed Epidermis and Clonal Expansion of p53 Mutant Cells in the Epidermis Adjacent to Basal Cell Carcinoma

p53 expression was studied immunohistochemically to identify a precursor lesion of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) in the epidermis adjacent to BCC. With two different anti-p53 antibodies of CM1 and DO7, p53 expression was frequently detected in the epidermis adjacent to BCCs arising on the face and in the normal epidermis with usual sun exposure. In the epidermis adjacent to BCC, stained cells were occasionally clustered in a small area, but no cluster was found in the normal epidermis with usual sun exposure. The expression was less frequent in the normal epidermis with rare sun exposure. Ten cases of normal skin with usual sun exposure, showing CM1 staining in the epidermis, were screened for p53 gene mutations with polymerase chain reaction-single- strand conformation polymorphism analysis using DNAs obtained from the epidermis. No mutation was detected in exons 2 to 10 of the p53 gene in these 10 cases. The epidermis flanking three BCCs that was stained with CM1, on the other hand, carried a missense mutation of C to G transversIon at a dipyrimidine site of codon 249. This alteration replaced arginine with threonine. The mutation of codon 249 was not detected in the three BCCs. Our results first suggest that ultraviolet light irradiating the skin in a daily life induces p53 accumulation in the epidermis and secondly that the frequent clonal expansion of p53 mutant cells occurs in the epidermis adjacent to BCCs. This clonal expansion of mutant p53 may provide a molecular basis for high risk of developing subsequent new skin cancers in patients with BCC

A large proportion of home care patients are at risk of pressure ulcer. The occurrence rate of pressure ulcer is higher in home care patients than that in the patients of hospitals and welfare facilities. The home care patients need long-term conservative treatment because of the depth of the pressure ulcers.Treatment of the pressure ulcers at home results in increase of caregivers burden. Therefore, prevention and early detection of pressure ulcers are important in home nursing. In early stage of pressure ulcers,“deep tissue injury”should be taken into consideration because of its progressive nature. It is a new concept which presents deep tissue damage remaining superficial skin intact. One of clinical features in this condition is induration in a deep layer. The past decade has seen a huge growth in the application of pressure relieving mattresses, absorbent products for urinary and faecal incontinence, and skin barrier products to prevention of the pressure ulcers. Economical, physical, and psychological burden of nursing at home should be decreased with an accumulation of these information and utilization of the products. Therefore, it is important for caregivers to consult with their care managers and acquire new knowledge and information
