Proposal to observe the strong Van der Waals force in e+\bar{e} -> 2 \pi
Large discrepancy of the p-wave phase shift data of the
- scattering from those of the dispersion calculation is pointed out.
In order to determine which is correct, the pion form factor ,
which is the second source of information of the phase shift ,
is used. It is found that the phase shift obtained from the dispersion is not
compatible with the data of the pion form factor. What is wrong with the
dispersion calculation, is considered.Comment: 7 pages, 7eps figure
Role of tight junctions in signal transduction: an update
Tight junctions (TJs), which are the most apically located of the intercellular junctional complexes, have a barrier function and a fence function. Recent studies show that they also participate in signal transduction mechanisms. TJs are modulated by intracellular signaling pathways including protein kinase C, mitogen-activated protein kinase, and NF-ÎşB, to affect the epithelial barrier function in response to diverse stimuli.
TJs are also regulated by various cytokines, growth factors, and hormones via signaling pathways. To investigate the regulation of TJ molecules via signaling pathways in human epithelial cells under normal and pathological conditions, we established a novel model of human telomerase reverse transcriptase-transfected human epithelial cells. In this review, we describe the recent progress in our understanding of the
role of TJs for signal transduction under normal conditions in upper airway epithelium, pancreatic duct epithelial cells, hepatocytes, and endometrial epithelial cells, and in pathological conditions including cancer and infection
Brain-specific gene expression by immortalized microglial cell-mediated gene transfer in the mammalian brain
AbstractThe intra-arterial injection of immortalized microglia transfected with the lacZ gene, resulted in the expression of β-galactosidase in the rat brain at 48 h and the activity of β-galactosidase was detected for up to 3 weeks post-injection. More than 30-fold higher activity of β-galactosidase was detected in the brain than in the liver, lung or spleen at 48 h post-injection. This method allows us to easily deliver the gene of interest to the brain without influencing other organs. Our brain-targeting gene delivery system can facilitate gene therapy of several brain disorders, including brain tumor, metabolic disorders, and degenerative disorders, as well as investigation into the roles of particular genes in brain function and development
