Enhanced subliminal emotional responses to dynamic facial expressions
Emotional processing without conscious awareness plays an important role in human social interaction. Several behavioral studies reported that subliminal presentation of photographs of emotional facial expressions induces unconscious emotional processing. However, it was difficult to elicit strong and robust effects using this method. We hypothesized that dynamic presentations of facial expressions would enhance subliminal emotional effects and tested this hypothesis with two experiments. Fearful or happy facial expressions were presented dynamically or statically in either the left or the right visual field for 20 (Experiment 1) and 30 (Experiment 2) ms. Nonsense target ideographs were then presented, and participants reported their preference for them. The results consistently showed that dynamic presentations of emotional facial expressions induced more evident emotional biases toward subsequent targets than did static ones. These results indicate that dynamic presentations of emotional facial expressions induce more evident unconscious emotional processing
Meteorological factors affecting the number of Weddell seals hauling-out on the ice during the molting season at Syowa Station, East Antarctica
Weddell seals show a clear diurnal haul-out pattern, while there have been few studies focusing on the influence of weather conditions. The present study investigates the relationship between the number of seals which haul-out on the fast ice and meteorological factors such as: air temperature, wind speed, humidity and irradiance in Syowa Station, East Antarctica. The number of seals was inversely related to wind speed (P -8.3 °C), indicating that some other factors might influence the seal\u27s decision to stay in the water
Asymmetric Mediator in Scotogenic Model
The scotogenic model is the Standard Model (SM) with Z_2 symmetry and the
addition of Z_2 odd right-handed Majorana neutrinos and SU(2)_L doublet scalar
fields. We have extended the original scotogenic model by an additional Z_2 odd
singlet scalar field that plays a role in dark matter. In our model, the
asymmetries of the lepton and Z_2 odd doublet scalar are simultaneously
produced through CP-violating right-handed neutrino decays. While the former is
converted into baryon asymmetry through the sphaleron process, the latter is
relaid to the DM density through the decay of SU(2)_L doublet scalar that is
named "asymmetric mediator". In this way, we provide an extended scotogenic
model that predicts the energy densities of baryon and dark matter being in the
same order of magnitude, and also explains the low-energy neutrino masses and
mixing angles.Comment: 17 pages, 1 table, 5 figure

Model Building by Coset Space Dimensional Reduction Scheme Using Twelve-Dimensional Coset Spaces
We investigate the twelve-dimensional gauge-Higgs unification models with an
eight-dimensional coset space. For each model, we apply the coset space
dimensional reduction procedure and examine the particle contents of the
resulting four-dimensional theory. Then, some twelve-dimensional SO(18) gauge
theories lead to models of the SO(10)\times U(1) grand unified theory in four
dimensions, where fermions of the Standard Model appear in multiple generations
along with scalars that may break the electroweak symmetry. The representations
of the obtained scalars and fermions are summarized.Comment: 17 pages, 4 table
Occurrences of metamorphosed ultramafic rock and associating rocks in Howard Hills, Enderby Land, East Antarctica: Evidence of partial melting from geochemical and isotopic characteristics
Large blocks of metamorphic rocks with mafic to ultramafic compositions were discovered in felsic gneiss at the central part of northern Howard Hills in Enderby Land. The ultramafic core is separated from the felsic gneiss by a mantle of pyroxene granulite. We can recognize from mineral assemblages and chemical compositions that the metamorphic rocks experienced ultrahigh temperature (UHT) metamorphism. Rubidium-strontium and samarium neodymium analytical data from the metamorphic rocks yield apparent ages of about 2.65 Ga within analytical error on isochron diagrams. Metamorphic rocks with mafic to ultramafic compositions are enriched in incompatible elements and have high Sr isotope ratios, resulting in some samples in improbable Nd model ages. This is attributed to enrichment of compatible elements and/or depletion of incompatible elements during metamorphism. We conclude that these metamorphic rocks experienced partial melting during UHT metamorphism. Pyroxene granulite was produced as a residual material after partial melting of LILE-enriched protoliths with high Sr isotope ratios
