BES3 time of flight monitoring system
A Time of Flight monitoring system has been developed for BES3.
The light source is a 442-443 nm laser diode, which is stable and provides a
pulse width as narrow as 50 ps and a peak power as large as 2.6 W. Two
optical-fiber bundles with a total of 512 optical fibers, including spares, are
used to distribute the light pulses to the Time of Flight counters. The design,
operation, and performance of the system are described.Comment: 8 pages 16 figures, submitted to NI
Thermodynamic modeling of the LiF-YF3 phase diagram
A thermodynamic optimization of the LiF-YF3 binary phase diagram was
performed by fitting the Gibbs energy functions to experimental data that were
taken from the literature, as well as from own thermoanalytic measurements (DTA
and DSC) on HF-treated samples. The Gibbs energy functions for the end member
compounds were taken from the literature. Excess energy terms, which describe
the effect of interaction between the two fluoride compounds in the liquid
phase, were expressed by the Redlich-Kister polynomial function. The calculated
phase diagram and thermodynamic properties for the unique formed compound,
LiYF4, are in reasonable agreement with the experimental data.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Homeless population
The aim was to derive and analyze a model for numbers of homeless and non-homeless people in a borough, in particular to see how these figures might be affected by different policies regarding housing various categories of people. Most attention was focused on steady populations although the stability of these and possible timescales of dynamic problems were also discussed.
The main outcome of this brief study is the identification of the key role played by the constant k_1 - the constant which fixes the speed at which the homeless are rehoused in permanent council property. Reducing this constant, i.e. making the system "fairer" with less priority to accommodating homeless families, appears to have little effect on the sizes of other categories on the waiting list but there is a marked increase in the number of households in temporary accommodation.
The model, indicated by the size of its longest time-scale, should be modified to allow for births etc.
It could be varied by allowing people to remove themselves from the register or by allowing the rates at which registered and unregistered people become homeless to differ, but these modifications are unlikely to substantially change the main result.
The inclusion of movement from the homeless to the general population would have the effect of limiting the numbers in temporary accommodation. However, it is thought this effect is very small so a great reduction in k_1 would be needed for this flow to become significant
Arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay Bundles on complete intersection varieties of sufficiently high multidegree
Recently it has been proved that any arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM)
bundle of rank two on a general, smooth hypersurface of degree at least three
and dimension at least four is a sum of line bundles. When the dimension of the
hypersurface is three, a similar result is true provided the degree of the
hypersurface is at least six. We extend these results to complete intersection
subvarieties by proving that any ACM bundle of rank two on a general, smooth
complete intersection subvariety of sufficiently high multi-degree and
dimension at least four splits. We also obtain partial results in the case of
threefolds.Comment: 15 page
Crossover and scaling in a two-dimensional field-tuned superconductor
Using an analysis similar to that of Imry and Wortis, it is shown that the
apparent first order superconductor to metal transition, which has been claimed
to exist at low values of the magnetic field in a two-dimensional field-tuned
system at zero temperature, can be consistentlyinterpreted as a sharp crossover
from a strong superconductor to an inhomogeneous state, which is a weak
superconductor. The true zero-temperature superconductor to insulator
transition within the inhomogenous state is conjectured to be that of randomly
diluted XY model. An explaination of the observed finite temperature
approximate scaling of resistivity close to the critical point is speculated
within this model.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, corrected and modified according to referee

Warped Phenomenology of Higher-Derivative Gravity
We examine the phenomenological implications at colliders for the existence
of higher-derivative gravity terms as extensions to the Randall-Sundrum model.
Such terms are expected to arise on rather general grounds, e.g., from string
theory. In 5-d, if we demand that the theory be unitary and ghost free, these
new contributions to the bulk action are uniquely of the Gauss-Bonnet form. We
demonstrate that the usual expectations for the production cross section and
detailed properties of graviton Kaluza-Klein resonances and TeV-scale black
holes can be substantially altered by existence of these additional
contributions. It is shown that measurements at future colliders will be highly
sensitive to the presence of such terms.Comment: 29 pages, 8 figure
Magnetotransport Mechanisms in Strongly Underdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_x Single Crystals
We report magnetoresistivity measurements on strongly underdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_x
(x=6.25, 6.36) single crystals in applied magnetic fields H || c-axis. We
identify two different contributions to both in-plane and out-of-plane
magnetoresistivities. The first contribution has the same sign as the
temperature coefficient of the resistivity \partial ln(\rho_i)/\partial T
(i={c,ab}). This contribution reflects the incoherent nature of the
out-of-plane transport. The second contribution is positive, quadratic in
field, with an onset temperature that correlates to the antiferromagnetic
ordering.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Existence of superposition solutions for pulse propagation in nonlinear resonant media
Existence of self-similar, superposed pulse-train solutions of the nonlinear,
coupled Maxwell-Schr\"odinger equations, with the frequencies controlled by the
oscillator strengths of the transitions, is established. Some of these
excitations are specific to the resonant media, with energy levels in the
configurations of and and arise because of the interference
effects of cnoidal waves, as evidenced from some recently discovered identities
involving the Jacobian elliptic functions. Interestingly, these excitations
also admit a dual interpretation as single pulse-trains, with widely different
amplitudes, which can lead to substantially different field intensities and
population densities in different atomic levels.Comment: 11 Pages, 6 Figures, presentation changed and 3 figures adde
