    Financial diversification before modern portfolio theory: UK financial advice documents in the late nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century

    The paper offers textual evidence from a series of financial advice documents in the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth century of how UK investors perceived of and managed risk. In the world’s largest financial centre of the time, UK investors were familiar with the concept of correlation and financial advisers’ suggestions were consistent with the recommendations of modern portfolio theory in relation to portfolio selection strategies. From the 1870s, there was an increased awareness of the benefits of financial diversification - primarily putting equal amounts into a number of different securities - with much of the emphasis being on geographical rather than sectoral diversification and some discussion of avoiding highly correlated investments. Investors in the past were not so naïve as mainstream financial discussions suggest today

    Quantum corrections to the mass of the supersymmetric vortex

    We calculate quantum corrections to the mass of the vortex in N=2 supersymmetric abelian Higgs model in (2+1) dimensions. We put the system in a box and apply the zeta function regularization. The boundary conditions inevitably violate a part of the supersymmetries. Remaining supersymmetry is however enough to ensure isospectrality of relevant operators in bosonic and fermionic sectors. A non-zero correction to the mass of the vortex comes from finite renormalization of couplings.Comment: Latex, 18 pp; v2 reference added; v3 minor change

    Quasi-Normal Modes of Schwarzschild Anti-De Sitter Black Holes: Electromagnetic and Gravitational Perturbations

    We study the quasi-normal modes (QNM) of electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations of a Schwarzschild black hole in an asymptotically Anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. Some of the electromagnetic modes do not oscillate, they only decay, since they have pure imaginary frequencies. The gravitational modes show peculiar features: the odd and even gravitational perturbations no longer have the same characteristic quasinormal frequencies. There is a special mode for odd perturbations whose behavior differs completely from the usual one in scalar and electromagnetic perturbation in an AdS spacetime, but has a similar behavior to the Schwarzschild black hole in an asymptotically flat spacetime: the imaginary part of the frequency goes as 1/r+, where r+ is the horizon radius. We also investigate the small black hole limit showing that the imaginary part of the frequency goes as r+^2. These results are important to the AdS/CFT conjecture since according to it the QNMs describe the approach to equilibrium in the conformal field theory.Comment: 2 figure

    D-Brane Probes of Special Holonomy Manifolds

    Using D2-brane probes, we study various properties of M-theory on singular, non-compact manifolds of G_2 and Spin(7) holonomy. We derive mirror pairs of N=1 supersymmetric three-dimensional gauge theories, and apply this technique to realize exceptional holonomy manifolds as both Coulomb and Higgs branches of the D2-brane world-volume theory. We derive a ``G_2 quotient construction'' of non-compact manifolds which admit a metric of G_2 holonomy. We further discuss the moduli space of such manifolds, including the structure of geometrical transitions in each case. For completeness, we also include familiar examples of manifolds with SU(3) and Sp(2) holonomy, where some of the new ideas are clarified and tested.Comment: 79 pages, Late

    New Solution of D=11 Supergravity on S^7 from D=4

    A new static partially twisted solution of N=4, SO(4) gauged supergravity in D=11 is obtained in this work using Cveti\^c et al embedding of four dimensional into eleven dimensional supergravities. In four dimensions we get two solutions: an asymptotic one corresponding to AdS4AdS_4 and a near horizon fixed point solution of the form AdS2Ă—H2AdS_2\times H_2. Hence, while the former solution has 32 supercharges the latter turns out to have only 4 conserved. Moreover, we managed to find an exact interpolating solution, thus connecting the above two. Aiming at a future study of AdS/CFTAdS/CFT duality for the theory at hand we derived the Penrose limit of the four dimensional solutions. Interestingly the pp-wave limit of the near horizon solution suggests itself as being of the supernumerary supersymmetric type. In D=11 we exhibit the uplift of the four dimensional solutions: one associated to AdS4Ă—S7AdS_4\times S^7 and the other to a foliation of AdS2Ă—H2Ă—S7AdS_2\times H_2 \times S^7, as well as their pp-wave limits.Comment: 14 pages, LaTe

    In this note we study warped compactifications of M-theory on manifolds of Spin(7) holonomy in the presence of background 4-form flux. The explicit form of the superpotential can be given in terms of the self -dual Cayley calibration on the Spin(7) manifold, in agreement with the general formula propsed in hep-th/9911011

    The differential effects of concurrent planning practice elements on reunification and adoption

    Objective: The child welfare practice of concurrent planning attempts to shorten children\u27s stays in foster care. There is very little quantitative research on concurrent planning\u27s effects. This study examines the influence of concurrent planning practice elements (reunification prognosis, concurrent plan, full disclosure, and discussion of voluntary relinquishment) on reunification and adoption. Method: Using a sample of 885 children, an observational design, and statistical controls, children who received concurrent planning elements were compared to those who did not. Results: Findings show discussion of voluntary relinquishment to be positively associated with adoption and full disclosure to be negatively associated with reunification. Conclusions: Concurrent planning\u27s benefits may require more intensive services to be fully realized. Care should be taken to ensure activities achieve their intended effects
