Preparation and Characterization of Homogeneous YBCO Single Crystals with Doping Level near the SC-AFM Boundary
High-purity and homogeneous YBa2Cu3Oy single crystals with carrier doping
level near the AFM-SC boundary have been obtained in the oxygen content range
between y = 6.340 and 6.370. The crystals are ortho-II phase at room
temperature and undergo the orthorhombic to tetragonal transition at about
140_Degree_C. They show sharp superconducting transitions, with Tc between 4
and 20 K. Tc changes by 0.8 K when the oxygen content y is changed by 0.001,
and is also sensitive to annealing conditions near room temperature, due to the
dependence of doping on oxygen ordering correlation lengths. Crystals with
oxygen content y lower than 6.345 are non-superconducting.Comment: 6 page
Edge wetting of an Ising three-dimensional system
The effect of edge on wetting and layering transitions of a three-dimensional
spin-1/2 Ising model is investigated, in the presence of longitudinal and
surface magnetic fields, using mean field (MF) theory and Monte Carlo (MC)
simulations. For T=0, the ground state phase diagram shows that there exist
only three allowed transitions, namely: surface and bulk transition, surface
transition and bulk transition. However, there exist a surface intra-layering
temperature , above which the surface and the intra-layering surface
transitions occur. While the bulk layering and intra-layering transitions
appear above an other finite temperature . These
surface and bulk intra-layering transitions are not seen in the perfect
surfaces case.
Numerical values of and , computed by Monte Carlo
method are found to be smaller than those obtained using mean field theory.
However, the results predicted by the two methods become similar, and are
exactly those given by the ground state phase diagram, for very low
temperatures. On the other hand, the behavior of the local magnetizations as a
function of the external magnetic field, shows that the transitions are of the
first order type. and decrease when increasing the
system size and/or the surface magnetic field. In particular,
reaches the wetting temperature for sufficiently large system sizes.Comment: 11 Pages latex, 12 Figures P
Coherent X-ray Scattering from Manganite Charge and Orbital Domains
We report coherent x-ray scattering studies of charge and orbital domains in
manganite systems. The experiments were carried out on LaMnO_3 and
Pr_{0.6}Ca_{0.4}MnO_3, with the incident photon energy tuned near the Mn K
edge. At room temperature, the orbital speckle pattern of LaMnO_3 was observed
to be constant over a timescale of at least minutes, which is indicative of
static orbital domains on this timescale. For Pr_{0.6}Ca_{0.4}MnO_3, both
charge and orbital speckle patterns were observed. The observation of the
latter rules out the presence of fast orbital fluctuations, while long time
series data-- on the order of several minutes-- were suggestive of slow dynamic
behavior. In contrast, the charge order speckle patterns were static.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
