Metal evaporated tape: state of the art and prospects
Thin metallic films are the first choice for media in advanced rigid disk systems. For helical scan tape recorders thin metal films have become more important. The high signal-to-noise ratio per unit of track width allows very high densities. The preparation techniques and materials properties of the thin-film coating of metal evaporated (ME) are described. Important aspects are the size of the grains, the geometry of the columnar structure and the associated anisotropy. The consequences for the recording process are explained. Tribological and corrosion properties also help to determine the usefulness of a recording tape. Corrosion, wear, protection layers and lubricating organic films are briefly discussed
Specific Heat of the 2D Hubbard Model
Quantum Monte Carlo results for the specific heat c of the two dimensional
Hubbard model are presented. At half-filling it was observed that
at very low temperatures. Two distinct features were also identified: a low
temperature peak related to the spin degrees of freedom and a higher
temperature broad peak related to the charge degrees of freedom. Away from
half-filling the spin induced feature slowly disappears as a function of hole
doping while the charge feature moves to lower temperature. A comparison with
experimental results for the high temperature cuprates is discussed.Comment: 6 pages, RevTex, 11 figures embedded in the text, Submitted to Phys.

Theory of a Higher Order Phase Transition: Superconducting Transition in BKBO
We describe here the properties expected of a higher (with emphasis on the
order fourth) order phase transition. The order is identified in the sense
first noted by Ehrenfest, namely in terms of the temperature dependence of the
ordered state free energy near the phase boundary. We have derived an equation
for the phase boundary in terms of the discontinuities in thermodynamic
observables, developed a Ginzburg-Landau free energy and studied the
thermodynamic and magnetic properties. We also discuss the current status of
experiments on and other based superconductors,
the expectations for parameters and examine alternative explanations of the
experimental results.Comment: 18 pages, no figure
Influence of Gap Extrema on the Tunneling Conductance Near an Impurity in an Anisotropic Superconductor
Changes: figures added in postscript form, Eq. (7) and various typos
corrected. We examine the effect of an impurity on the nearby tunneling
conductance in an anisotropically-gapped superconductor. The variation of the
conductance has pronounced spatial dependence which depends strongly on the
Fermi surface location of gap extrema. In particular, different gap symmetries
produce profoundly different spatial features in the conductance. These effects
may be detectable with an STM measurement on the surface of a high-temperature
superconductor.Comment: 12 pages (revtex) + 3 figures (included - postscript), NSF-ITP-93-8
Treatment of Glioblastoma in Elderly Patients: An Overview of Current Treatments and Future Perspective
Current treatment of glioblastoma in the elderly includes surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, but the prognosis remains extremely poor, and its optimal management is still debated. Longer survival after extensive resection compared with biopsy only has been reported, although the survival advantage remains modest. Radiation in the form of standard (60 Gy in 30 fractions over 6 weeks) and abbreviated courses of radiotherapy (30-50 Gy in 6-20 fractions over 2-4 weeks) has been employed in elderly patients with glioblastoma, showing survival benefits compared with supportive care alone. Temozolomide is an alkylating agent recently employed in older patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma. The addition of concomitant and/or adjuvant chemotherapy with temozolomide to radiotherapy, which is currently the standard treatment in adults with glioblastoma, is emerging as an effective therapeutic option for older patients with favorable prognostic factors. The potential benefits on survival, improvement in quality of life and toxicity of different schedules of radiotherapy plus temozolomide need to be addressed in future randomized studies
