    Emerging Markets for GM Foods: An Indian Perspective on Consumer Understanding and Willingness to Pay

    This paper addresses the issues of consumer awareness, opinion, acceptance and willingness to pay for GM foods in the Indian market. A random utility approach is used to estimate a logit equation which indicates what factors affect the likelihood of consumption of non-GM and GM foods and whether or not consumers are willing to pay a premium for non-GM/GM foods. Data was generated through questionnaire survey which was administered to 602 respondents in the city of Ahmedabad and 110 respondents on internet. More than 90% of the respondents from the city survey did not know about GM foods. However, after informing them about the pros and cons of GM foods, more than 70% were willing to consume even if GM and non-GM foods were available for the same price. Ceteris paribus as the price difference between non-GM and GM food rose, people were more likely to consume GM foods. Likelihood of GM food consumption seemed to increase as one moved from very poor and not-so-poor income brackets to higher income brackets. Being a female or a joint family member increased the likelihood of choosing non-GM rice and edible oil. On an average, consumers were willing to pay 19.5% and 16.12% premiums for golden rice and GM edible oil, respectively. Overall, it appears that GM foods will be acceptable in the Indian market. However, consumer education societies, government ministries, and food companies may have to create awareness about the GM foods among Indian consumers.

    Topological surface states in three-dimensional magnetic insulators

    An electron moving in a magnetically ordered background feels an effective magnetic field that can be both stronger and more rapidly varying than typical externally applied fields. One consequence is that insulating magnetic materials in three dimensions can have topologically nontrivial properties of the effective band structure. For the simplest case of two bands, these "Hopf insulators" are characterized by a topological invariant as in quantum Hall states and Z_2 topological insulators, but instead of a Chern number or parity, the underlying invariant is the Hopf invariant that classifies maps from the 3-sphere to the 2-sphere. This paper gives an efficient algorithm to compute whether a given magnetic band structure has nontrivial Hopf invariant, a double-exchange-like tight-binding model that realizes the nontrivial case, and a numerical study of the surface states of this model.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures; published versio

    Suppression of Superconducting Critical Current Density by Small Flux Jumps in MgB2MgB_2 Thin Films

    By doing magnetization measurements during magnetic field sweeps on thin films of the new superconductor MgB2MgB_2, it is found that in a low temperature and low field region small flux jumps are taking place. This effect strongly suppresses the central magnetization peak leading to reduced nominal superconducting critical current density at low temperatures. A borderline for this effect to occur is determined on the field-temperature (H-T) phase diagram. It is suggested that the small size of the flux jumps in films is due to the higher density of small defects and the relatively easy thermal diffusion in thin films in comparison with bulk samples.Comment: 7 figures Phys.     Evolution of magnetic component in Yang-Mills condensate dark energy models

    The evolution of the electric and magnetic components in an effective Yang-Mills condensate dark energy model is investigated. If the electric field is dominant, the magnetic component disappears with the expansion of the Universe. The total YM condensate tracks the radiation in the earlier Universe, and later it becomes wy1w_y\sim-1 thus is similar to the cosmological constant. So the cosmic coincidence problem can be avoided in this model. However, if the magnetic field is dominant, wy>1/3w_y>1/3 holds for all time, suggesting that it cannot be a candidate for the dark energy in this case.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, minor typos correcte

    Theory of pattern-formation of metallic microparticles in poorly conducting liquid

    We develop continuum theory of self-assembly and pattern formation in metallic microparticles immersed in a poorly conducting liquid in DC electric field. The theory is formulated in terms of two conservation laws for the densities of immobile particles (precipitate) and bouncing particles (gas) coupled to the Navier-Stokes equation for the liquid. This theory successfully reproduces correct topology of the phase diagram and primary patterns observed in the experiment [Sapozhnikov et al, Phys. Rev.     BTZ black hole and quantum Hall effect in the bulk/boundary dynamics

    We point out an interesting analogy between the BTZ black hole and QHE (Quantum Hall effect) in the (2+1)-dimensional bulk/boundary theories. It is shown that the Chern-Simons/Liouville(Chern-Simons/chiral boson) is an effective description for the BTZ black hole (QHE). Also the IR(bulk)-UV(boundary) connection for a black hole information bound is realized as the UV(low-lying excitations on bulk)-IR(long-range excitations on boundary) connection in the QHE. An inflow of conformal anomaly(c=1c=1 central charge) onto the timelike boundary of AdS3_3 by the Noether current corresponds to an inflow of chiral anomaly onto the edge of disk by the Hall current.Comment: 8 pages, this version to appear in Phys.
