Chronic maternal dietary iodine deficiency but not thiocyanate feeding affects maternal reproduction and postnatal performance of the rat

603-609Iodine deficiency disorders affect reproductive performance in the afflicted populations. Environmental iodine deficiency (ID) and goitrogens are important in their aetiology. We observed earlier that chronic maternal dietary ID but not goitrogen feeding altered the blood-brain barrier nutrient transport in adult rats. Whether similar differences exist in their effects on reproduction of dams and postnatal performance of the offspring has been assessed. Inbred, female, weaning WNIN rats were rendered hypothyroid by feeding for 8-12 weeks, a low iodine test diet or a control diet with added potassium thiocyanate (KSCN) (@ 25 mg/rat/day). Following mating with control males, they continued on their respective diets till their pups were weaned. Indices of reproductive performance such as percentage of conception, mortality of dams during pregnancy and parturition, litter size, and survival of pups till weaning were affected markedly by ID but not thiocyanate feeding. Neither ID nor thiocyanate feeding from conception or parturition affected their reproductive performance. Nevertheless, postnatal weight gain of pups was less in all the three ID groups but not thiocyanate fed dams. Rehabilitation of chronically ID pregnant dams from conception or parturition did not improve their pregnancy weight gain, litter size or birth weight of pups but decreased abortion and mortality of mothers during pregnancy and parturition. Rehabilitation improved the pups’ postnatal weight gain but the effect was only moderate. Based on the results of the present study it may be suggested that maternal ID but not thiocyanate feeding affects reproductive performance and postnatal performance of their offspring

Nanomechanical and optical properties of highly a-axis oriented AlN films

This paper reports optical and nanomechanical properties of predominantly a-axis oriented AlN thin films. These films were deposited by reactive DC magnetron sputtering technique at an optimal target to substrate distance of 180 mm. X-ray rocking curve (FWHM = 52 arcsec) studies confirmed the preferred orientation. Spectroscopic ellipsometry revealed a refractive index of 1.93 at a wavelength of 546 nm. The hardness and elastic modulus of these films were 17 and 190 GPa, respectively, which are much higher than those reported earlier can be useful for piezoelectric films in bulk acoustic wave resonators. Ellipsometric studies on TiO2 thin films synthesized by spray pyrolysis technique

TiO2 thin films were synthesized on quartz substrates at substrate temperatures of 350°C and 450°C by thermal spray pyrolysis technique using titanium oxy-acetyl acetonate as a precursor. The optical properties of the thin films were characterized by a Spectroscopic Ellipsometer (SE). The surface morphology of the thin films was studied using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The surface roughness values obtained using AFM and SE was compared. The refractive indices of the films were computed using a point by point ellipsometric data extraction procedure. The porosity of the films were modeled from the optical data by effective medium approximation and corroborated from empirical relations. Using Forouhi-Bloomer optical dispersion model, further treatment of SE data was carried out. The experimental investigations and modeling of the data were directed towards optical benchmarking of spray pyrolyzed titania thin films

Spectroscopic studies on DLC/TM (Cr, Ag, Ti, Ni) multilayers

The hydrogen-free diamond-like carbon (DLC) films with transition metal (TM = Cr, Ag, Ti, Ni) interlayer (bilayer and multilayer) were deposited on to stainless steel and silicon substrates using pulsed laser deposition technique. Secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) confirmed that the films were hydrogen free. Incorporation of chromium inter layer reduced the stress value by about 3 GPa as determined by micro Raman spectroscopy. Incorporation of the TM inter layer enhanced the photoluminescence (PL) intensity as compared to the monolithic DLC films. The optical band gap determined by spectroscopic ellipsometry for DLC/TM films was found to be in the range of 1.56–1.67 eV
