WEMo (Wave Exposure Model): Formulation, Procedures and Validation
This report describes the working of National Centers for Coastal Ocean Service (NCCOS) Wave Exposure Model (WEMo) capable of predicting the exposure of a site in estuarine and closed water to local wind generated waves. WEMo works in two different modes: the Representative Wave Energy (RWE) mode calculates the exposure using physical parameters like wave energy and wave height, while the Relative Exposure Index (REI) empirically calculates exposure as a unitless index. Detailed working of the model in both modes and their procedures are described along with a few sample runs. WEMo model output in RWE mode (wave height and wave energy) is compared against data collected from wave sensors near Harkers Island, North Carolina for validation purposes. Computed results agreed well with the wave sensors data indicating that WEMo can be an effective tool in predicting local wave energy in closed estuarine environments. (PDF contains 31 pages
Luminosity functions of Lyman-alpha emitters at z=6.5, and z=5.7: evidence against reionization at z=6
Lyman-alpha emission from galaxies should be suppressed completely or
partially at redshifts beyond reionization. Without knowing the instrinsic
properties of galaxies at z = 6.5, this attenuation is hard to infer in any one
source, but can be infered from a comparison of luminosity functions of
lyman-alpha emitters at redshifts just before and after reionization. We
combine published surveys of widely varying depths and areas to construct
luminosity functions at z=6.5 and 5.7, where the characteristic luminosity
L_star and density phi_star are well constrained while the faint-end slope of
the luminosity function is essentially unconstrained. Excellent consistency is
seen in all but one published result. We then calculate the likelihood of
obtaining the z=6.5 observations given the z=5.7 luminosity function with (A)
no evolution and (B) an attenuation of a factor of three. Hypothesis (A) gives
an acceptable likelihood while (B) does not. This indicates that the z=6.5
lyman-alpha lines are not strongly suppressed by a neutral intergalactic medium
and that reionization was largely complete at z = 6.5.Comment: Submitted to Astrophysical Journal Letter
Demonstration of Extracellular Space by Freeze-Drying in the Cerebellar Molecular Layer
In electron micrographs of the molecular layer of the mouse cerebellum frozen within 30 sec of circulatory arrest and subsequently dried at -79 °C an appreciable extracellular space was found between the axons of the granular cells. Tight junctions were regularly observed between pre- and postsynaptic structures and the enveloping glia cells. In micrographs of cerebellum frozen 8 min after decapitation the space between the axons was absent and tight junctions between the nerve fibres were almost exclusively encountered. The extracellular space of asphyxiated and non-asphyxiated tissue in electron micrographs of frozen-dried material is similar to the space in comparable tissues treated by freeze-substitution. These observations suggest that there is an appreciable amount of extracellular material in oxygenated, living tissue which is taken up by cellular elements during asphyxiation
A study of mitochondrial membranes in relation to elementary particles
Elementary particles that commonly have been seen by electron microscopy to be attached by stalks to mitochondrial cristae in negatively stained preparations, were not apparent in similarly stained mitochondria from exponentially growing wild-type Neurospora crassa when these were isolated in sucrose solution containing 1 x 10^-3 M EDTA. However, elementary particles were easily demonstrable in electron micrographs if the mitochondria were isolated without EDTA in the sucrose solution. A biochemical study indicated that both kinds of mitochondrial preparations, isolated in the presence or absence of EDTA, had about the same capacity for oxidative phosphorylation. Observations on rat-liver mitochondria also suggested that the stalked elementary particles were more easily demonstrated if the preparation was made in the absence of EDTA. It was difficult to demonstrate elementary particles in wild-type Neurospora mitochondria isolated with or without EDTA and subsequently prepared for electron microscopy by spreading on the surface of an aqueous solution of potassium phosphotungstate. Elementary particles could be demonstrated in poky Neurospora mitochondria isolated with EDTA if the mitochondria were spread on the surface of an aqueous solution of phosphotungstate. It was concluded that biochemical functions associated with elementary particles are independent of structural configuration as seen by electron microscopy
A Study of the Dynamics of Dust from the Kuiper Belt: Spatial Distribution and Spectral Energy Distribution
The dust produced in the Kuiper Belt (KB) spreads throughout the Solar System
forming a dust disk. We numerically model the orbital evolution of KB dust and
estimate its equilibrium spatial distribution and its brightness and spectral
energy distributions (SED), assuming greybody absorption and emission by the
dust grains. We show that the planets modify the KB disk SED, so potentially we
can infer the presence of planets in spatially unresolved debris disks by
studying the shape of their SEDs. We point out that there are inherent
uncertainties in the prediction of structure in the dust disk, owing to the
chaotic dynamics of dust orbital evolution imposed by resonant gravitational

Starburst Intensity Limit of Galaxies at z~5-6
The peak star formation intensity in starburst galaxies does not vary
significantly from the local universe to redshift z~6. We arrive at this
conclusion through new surface brightness measurements of 47 starburst galaxies
at z~5-6, doubling the redshift range for such observations. These galaxies are
spectroscopically confirmed in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF) through the
GRism ACS program for Extragalactic Science (GRAPES) project. The starburst
intensity limit for galaxies at z~5-6 agree with those at z~3-4 and z~0 to
within a factor of a few, after correcting for cosmological surface brightness
dimming and for dust. The most natural interpretation of this constancy over
cosmic time is that the same physical mechanisms limit starburst intensity at
all redshifts up to z~6 (be they galactic winds, gravitational instability, or
something else). We do see two trends with redshift: First, the UV spectral
slope of galaxies at z~5-6 is bluer than that of z~3 galaxies, suggesting an
increase in dust content over time. Second, the galaxy sizes from z~3 to z~6
scale approximately as the Hubble parameter 1/H(z). Thus, galaxies at z~6 are
high redshift starbursts, much like their local analogs except for slightly
bluer colors, smaller physical sizes, and correspondingly lower overall
luminosities. If we now assume a constant maximum star formation intensity, the
differences in observed surface brightness between z~0 and z~6 are consistent
with standard expanding cosmology and strongly inconsistent with tired light

Redshifts of the Gravitational Lenses MG0414+0534 and MG0751+2716
We report redshifts in two gravitational lens systems, MG0414+0534 and
MG0751+2716. The lens galaxy in MG0414+0534 lies at z_l=0.9584+/-0.0002. The
luminosity and extreme red color of the lens are then typical of a passively
evolving, early-type, ~2L* galaxy. The galaxy cannot have a significant global
mean extinction without being anomalously luminous. The lens galaxy in
MG0751+2716 has a redshift of z_l=0.3502+/-0.0003 and it is a member of a small
group. The group includes the nearby, bright companion galaxy whose redshift we
confirmed to be z=0.3501+/-0.0001 and a nearby emission line galaxy with
z=0.3505+/-0.0003. A second emission line galaxy with z=0.5216+/-0.0001 was
found nearly superposed on the first emission line galaxy. The source in
MG0751+2716 is a z_s=3.200+/-0.001 radio quasar. For flat universes with
Omega_0=1.0 (0.3), 96% (87%) of lenses like MG0414+0534 and 7% (3%) of lenses

Dynamic Resonance Effects in the Statistical Distributions of Asteroids and Comets
Some principles in the distribution of Centaurs and the "Scattered Disk"
objects, as well as the Kuiper belt objects for its semi-major axes,
eccentricities and inclinations of the orbits have been investigated. It has
been established, that more than a half from them move on the resonant orbits
and that is what has been predicted earlier. The divergence of the maximum in
the observable distribution of the objects of the Kuiper belt for the

Dietary factors causing hypertension in India
The prevalence of hypertension was studied in 2,638 North Indian and 1,860 South Indian railway workers, all men, between 20 and 58 years of age, by determining casual arterial pressure. The main survey included 1,046 North Indian and 1,106 South Indian clerks from the Accounting Section of the Finance Branch, comparable in their socioeconomic status, nature of work, and wage bracket. The South Indian population showed a much higher prevalence of hypertension as well as higher mean arterial pressures, probably due to environmental rather than ethnic reasons. In neither of these populations was the prevalence of hypertension related to age, occupation, body weight, smoking, chronic pyelonephritis, dietary salt intake, or psychological factors. The differences appeared to be due to hemodynamic changes probably brought about by dietary factors (especially the long-chain versus short-chain fatty acids in fats consumed) by virtue of their effect on the size and nature of chylomicrons, blood viscosity, and peripheral resistance
