Digital Humanities and Game Ethics: Investigating the Impact of Representation in Gaming

    Get PDF
“Digital humanities” is about the usage of computer-assisted tools to preserve knowledge and disseminate them through technological resources. An extension of these techniques can be seen in today’s hyper realistic games with high-concept storytelling. These games immerse the players in a world that enables them to experience a different reality and often ask them to make choices that have real-life social impact. They have empowered artists to create worlds that could become a testing ground for philosophical theories. This paper concentrates on the impact of gaming on real-world ethical and political questions. This paper primarily focuses on the impact of The Last of Us Part II- an action-adventure game developed by Naughty dog- on the discussion of the inclusion of LGBTQ+ characters on already existing IP (Intellectual Property). The response that the game received among the players can be used to understand the general perspective of these elite communities on LGBTQ+ issues. This paper also includes the positive impact of such inclusion and argues that the diversification of characters in already existing IP substantially contributes to inclusivity and equality

    Cholangiocarcinoma miscoding in hepatobiliary centres

INTRODUCTION: Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) are sub-divided into intrahepatic (iCCA) or extrahepatic (eCCA). eCCA are further subdivided into perihilar (pCCA) and distal (dCCA). Current and previous versions of the WHO International Coding of Disease and Oncology classifications (ICD) have separate topography codes for iCCA and eCCA, but none for pCCA. Over recent decades, multiple studies report rising incidence rates of iCCA with declining rates of eCCA, without reference to pCCA. We hypothesised the lack of a specific code for pCCA has led to errors CCA coding, specifically with miscoding of pCCA as iCCA. METHODS: Clinical notes of cases coded as hepatobiliary carcinoma using ICD-10 criteria (C22.1/Intrahepatic Bile Duct carcinoma, C24.0/Extrahepatic Bile Duct carcinoma, C23X/Malignant Neoplasm Gall Bladder, C22.0/Malignant Neoplasm Liver Cell Carcinoma) over a 2 year period (2015-2017), were reviewed by two independent clinicians at three independent UK regional HepatoPancreatoBiliary centres. The agreed final diagnosis was compared to the originally allocated ICD-10 code. RESULTS: Of the 625 CCA cases fully reviewed, 226 were coded as C22.1/iCCA. 98 (43%) of these were true iCCA and coded correctly, while 76 cases (34%) were actually pCCA. 92% all pCCA cases were incorrectly coded as iCCA. CONCLUSION: CCA coding misclassification in UK HPB centres is common, particularly the miscoding of pCCA, which is extrahepatic and the commonest form of CCA, as iCCA. This may be contributing to apparent rising incidence rates of iCCA. Our findings confirm the need to implement distinct topographical codes for iCCA, pCCA and dCCA in future iterations of ICD

Sensitization of Gold Dust in 430 Grade Stainless Steel

\u27Gold dusting\u27 is a surface defect that is sometimes observed on cold-rolled AISI type 430 stainless steel. Gold dusting is characterized by a sparkling appearance, which results from small flakes of metal on the cold rolled surface, the flakes are mostly elongated in the rolling direction. The processing steps include continuous casting, hot rolling, continuous annealing, and pickling. One possibility is that the flakes of metal are grains that had been undercut by intergranular corrosion such intergranular corrosion may occur during pickling after the annealing step (which itself follows hot rolling). If intergranular corrosion does occur during this pickling step, the intergranular cavities would be elongated by subsequent cold rolling; this can account for the observed morphology of gold dusting. If the steel has been sensitized, intergranular corrosion may occur during pickling. Pickling is commonly carried out by electrolytic descaling in a neutral sodium sulphate solution followed by immersion in a nitric acid/hydrofluoric acid bath. The sensitized type 430 stainless steel does, indeed, suffer intergranular corrosion in a nitric acid/hydrofluoric acid bath, while it is largely unaffected during electrolytic pickling. Hence, sensitization is a possible cause of gold dusting

Abstract: This paper addresses the approach to improve the efficiency of the quasi Z-source inverter. In order to increase the efficiency the reduction of conduction losses is one way to approach. Sequentially to decrease the conduction losses in the quasi z-source inverter the replacement of diode is replacing with switches is proposed which is also called as synchronous rectification. The paper represents basics of the approach, analysis and comparison of the power losses of the traditional and proposed designs of the grid connected PV-system with quasi z-source inverter system. The proposed approach validated on the computer simulations in the MATLAB environment

Background: A balanced sex ratio is essential for a stable society. Objective: The main objective of the present research was to study the perceptions of women attending the antenatal care (ANC) facility regarding their gender preferences and family composition.Method: In this cross-sectional study 132 antenatal women were interviewed in their preferred language using a predesigned semi-structured questionnaire. The collected information was analyzed using SPSS version 11.5.Results: The mean age of the study participants was 27.2 ± 4.1 years. The majority of the antenatal women (60.6%, n=80) did not have any gender preferences. Among those who had a gender preference (39.4%, n=52), male and female preference was reported by 55.7% (n=29) and 44.3% (n=23) of the participants respectively. The overall son preference index was observed to be 1.3. No consistent relationship could be established between the socio-demographic factors and the preference for gender. The mean preferred family size in our study was 1.85±0.531 and more than half of the participants had a balanced gender preference. The majority of the participants were aware that the adverse sex ratio can lead to fall in the number of brides and that it would bring about a social imbalance. Conclusion: As a developed society we need to ensure that both the genders get equal respect and are free from any sort of preferences and prejudices. To achieve this, more and more people need to be made aware of the consequences of gender imbalance and adverse sex ratio in a society. Keywords: Gender preferences; family composition; antenatal women; coastal South Indi

Background Behavioural risk factors may often present during adolescence and account for 70% of premature deaths during adulthood. Excessive sedentary behaviour and screen time have become significant concerns, especially among adolescents, due to their potential negative impact on physical and mental health. Adolescents with a high screen-based sedentary time are more likely to be physically inactive, have unhealthy body structure and poor academic performance. The objective of our study is to assess the effect of multi-component modular educational intervention on screen-based sedentary time (SST) and non-screen-based Sedentary time (NSST) among adolescents. Methods Ethical approval for the study has been obtained from the institutional Ethics Committee of Kasturba Medical College in Mangalore, India. This cluster randomized control trial will be carried out in schools located in the urban area of Mangalore. Using simple randomization, the eligible schools will be randomized into intervention and control arms, each consisting of 10 clusters. A multi-component modular educational intervention will be administered to participants in the intervention group at baseline, second and fourth month. The control group will receive the standard curriculum. Both the groups will be assessed at baseline and at second month, fourth month and sixth month of follow up for SST, NSST and level of physical activity. Anthropometric measurements like height, weight, waist circumference and hip circumference will be taken at baseline and sixth month of follow up. Results A comprehensive school-based modular educational intervention can have cumulative advantages by reducing screen- and non-screen-based sedentary time, and encouraging physical activity. Similar modular teaching can be incorporated into the curriculum, which will promote healthy life-style among the adolescents

BackgroundGlobally, 1.1 billion people lack access to improved drinking water supply and drink water that is grossly contaminated. Hence, study of water treatment assumes utmost importance in order to ensure the safety of the water consumed especially in fast developing cities. This study would provide information of drinking water management practices in the study area. We studied the sources, the treatment and storage facilities of drinking water in households and assessed the free chlorine levels in the drinking water.Method  This community based cross sectional study was conducted in Mangalore - a city of Karnataka State in South India. Using convenience sampling, 100 households were visited in the area of Boloor. Information was collected regarding demographic profile, household drinking water sources, treatment and storage practices followed by testing for free chlorine in the drinking water using O-Toluidine.ResultsStudy population had high literacy rate and 83% had their main source of drinking water from municipality, 17% had private water source. Among these 6% households had bore wells, 10% had protected dug well. Overall 99% had improved source of drinking water. Sumps were present in 32% of the households.  Of these 34.4 % cleaned it once a month. Boiling was found to be the preferred choice of water treatment; but 5% of the population (lower socio economic status) did not use any method to treat water in their households. Overall, 43% households drank water by pouring to glass from storage vessel, 34% dipped glass into vessel using hands, 23% had tap system and 84.2% of the households cleaned their storage vessel daily. O-Toluidine test showed no free chlorine in drinking water in any of the homes.ConclusionStudy population had access to improved water. However households lacked appropriate storage and handling practices of drinking water which needs to be evaluated further

Unraveling the genetic architecture of subtropical maize (Zea mays L.) lines to assess their utility in breeding programs

Background Maize is an increasingly important food crop in southeast Asia. The elucidation of its genetic architecture, accomplished by exploring quantitative trait loci and useful alleles in various lines across numerous breeding programs, is therefore of great interest. The present study aimed to characterize subtropical maize lines using high-quality SNPs distributed throughout the genome. Results We genotyped a panel of 240 subtropical elite maize inbred lines and carried out linkage disequilibrium, genetic diversity, population structure, and principal component analyses on the generated SNP data. The mean SNP distance across the genome was 70 Kb. The genome had both high and low linkage disequilibrium (LD) regions; the latter were dominant in areas near the gene-rich telomeric portions where recombination is frequent. A total of 252 haplotype blocks, ranging in size from 1 to 15.8 Mb, were identified. Slow LD decay (200-300 Kb) at r2 <= 0.1 across all chromosomes explained the selection of favorable traits around low LD regions in different breeding programs. The association mapping panel was characterized by strong population substructure. Genotypes were grouped into three distinct clusters with a mean genetic dissimilarity coefficient of 0.36. Conclusions The genotyped panel of subtropical maize lines characterized in this study should be useful for association mapping of agronomically important genes. The dissimilarity uncovered among genotypes provides an opportunity to exploit the heterotic potential of subtropical elite maize breeding lines
