Flavor constraints in a Bosonic Technicolor model
Flavor constraints in a bosonic Technicolor model are considered. We
illustrate different sources for their origin, and emphasize in particular the
role played by the vector states present in the Technicolor model. This feature
is the essential difference in comparison to an analogous model with two
fundamental Higgs scalar doublets.Comment: 16 pages, 13 figure
Minimal Super Technicolor
We introduce novel extensions of the Standard Model featuring a
supersymmetric technicolor sector. First we consider N=4 Super Yang-Mills which
breaks to N=1 via the electroweak (EW) interactions and coupling to the MSSM.
This is a well defined, economical and calculable extension of the SM involving
the smallest number of fields. It constitutes an explicit example of a natural
supersymmetric conformal extension of the Standard Model featuring a well
defined connection to string theory. It allows to interpolate, depending on how
we break the underlying supersymmetry, between unparticle physics and Minimal
Walking Technicolor. As a second alternative we consider other N =1 extensions
of the Minimal Walking Technicolor model. The new models allow all the standard
model matter fields to acquire a mass.Comment: Improved version demonstrating that this extension is
phenomenologically viable. No Landau pole exists in the theory to two loops

Switching of +/-360deg domain wall states in a nanoring by an azimuthal Oersted field
We demonstrate magnetic switching between two domain wall vortex
states in cobalt nanorings, which are candidate magnetic states for robust and
low power MRAM devices. These domain wall (DW) or "twisted onion"
states can have clockwise or counterclockwise circulation, the two states for
data storage. Reliable switching between the states is necessary for any
realistic device. We accomplish this switching by applying a circular Oersted
field created by passing current through a metal atomic force microscope tip
placed at the center of the ring. After initializing in an onion state, we
rotate the DWs to one side of the ring by passing a current through the center,
and can switch between the two twisted states by reversing the current, causing
the DWs to split and meet again on the opposite side of the ring. A larger
current will annihilate the DWs and create a perfect vortex state in the rings.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Detecting fractions of electrons in the high- cuprates
We propose several tests of the idea that the electron is fractionalized in
the underdoped and undoped cuprates. These include the ac Josephson effect, and
tunneling into small superconducting grains in the Coulomb blockade regime. In
both cases, we argue that the results are qualitatively modified from the
conventional ones if the insulating tunnel barrier is fractionalized. These
experiments directly detect the possible existence of the chargon - a charge
spinless boson - in the insulator. The effects described in this paper
provide a means to probing whether the undoped cuprate (despite it's magnetism)
is fractionalized. Thus, the experiments discussed here are complementary to
the flux-trapping experiment we proposed in our earlier work(cond-mat/0006481).Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure

Women's views of continuity of information provided during and after pregnancy: A qualitative interview study
Straightforward transfer of care from pregnancy to the postpartum period is associated with health benefits and is desired by women worldwide. Underpinning this transfer of care is the sharing of information between healthcare professionals and the provision of consistent information to women. In this qualitative study, two aspects of continuity of information were examined; first the information passed on from midwife to health visitor regarding a woman and her baby before the health visitor meets the woman postnatally and second, the consistency of information received by women from these two healthcare professionals (the main healthcare providers during and after pregnancy in England). To be eligible for the study, women had to have had a baby in England within 12Â months prior to the interview. Participants also needed to be able to read and speak English and be over 18Â years old. Recruitment of participants was via word of mouth and social media. Twenty-nine mothers were interviewed of whom 19 were first time mothers. The interviews took place in the summer and autumn of 2016 and were transcribed verbatim and analysed using Framework Analysis. Two overarching themes were identified: not feeling listened to and information inconsistencies. Women reported little experience of midwives and health visitors sharing information about their care, forcing women to repeat information. This made women feel not listened to and participants recommended that healthcare professionals share information; prioritising information about labour, mental health, and chronic conditions. Women had mixed experiences regarding receiving information from midwives and health visitors, with examples of both consistent and inconsistent information received. To avoid inconsistent information, joint appointments were recommended. Findings from this study clearly suggest that better communication pathways need to be developed and effectively implemented for midwives and health visitors to improve the care that they provide to women
The Sun's Preferred Longitudes and the Coupling of Magnetic Dynamo Modes
Observations show that solar activity is distributed non-axisymmetrically,
concentrating at "preferred longitudes". This indicates the important role of
non-axisymmetric magnetic fields in the origin of solar activity. We
investigate the generation of the non-axisymmetric fields and their coupling
with axisymmetric solar magnetic field. Our kinematic generation (dynamo) model
operating in a sphere includes solar differential rotation, which approximates
the differential rotation obtained by inversion of helioseismic data, modelled
distributions of the turbulent resistivity, non-axisymmetric mean helicity, and
meridional circulation in the convection zone. We find that (1) the
non-axisymmetric modes are localised near the base of the convection zone,
where the formation of active regions starts, and at latitudes around
; (2) the coupling of non-axisymmetric and axisymmetric modes
causes the non-axisymmetric mode to follow the solar cycle; the phase relations
between the modes are found. (3) The rate of rotation of the first
non-axisymmetric mode is close to that determined in the interplanetary space.Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures. Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical
