A renormalization group model for the stick-slip behavior of faults
A fault which is treated as an array of asperities with a prescribed statistical distribution of strengths is described. For a linear array the stress is transferred to a single adjacent asperity and for a two dimensional array to three ajacent asperities. It is shown that the solutions bifurcate at a critical applied stress. At stresses less than the critical stress virtually no asperities fail on a large scale and the fault is locked. At the critical stress the solution bifurcates and asperity failure cascades away from the nucleus of failure. It is found that the stick slip behavior of most faults can be attributed to the distribution of asperities on the fault. The observation of stick slip behavior on faults rather than stable sliding, why the observed level of seismicity on a locked fault is very small, and why the stress on a fault is less than that predicted by a standard value of the coefficient of friction are outlined
WASP-1: A lithium- and metal-rich star with an oversized planet
In this paper we present our results of a comprehensive spectroscopicanalysis
of WASP-1, the host star to the exoplanet WASP-1b. We derive T_eff = 6110 +/-
45 K, log g = 4.28 +/- 0.15, and [M/H] = 0.23 +/- 0.08, and also a high
abundance of lithium, log n(Li) = 2.91 +/- 0.05. These parameters suggests an
age for the system of 1-3 Gyr and a stellar mass of 1.25-1.35 M_sun. This means
that WASP-1 has properties very similar to those of HD 149026, the host star
for the highest density planet yet detected. Moreover, their planets orbit at
comparable distances and receive comparable irradiating fluxes from their host
stars. However, despite the similarity of WASP-1 with HD 149026, their planets
have strongly different densities. This suggests that gas-giant planet density
is not a simple function of host-star metallicity or of radiation environment
at ages of ~2 Gyr.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 6 pages, 4 figure
Luminescent hyperbolic metasurfaces.
When engineered on scales much smaller than the operating wavelength, metal-semiconductor nanostructures exhibit properties unobtainable in nature. Namely, a uniaxial optical metamaterial described by a hyperbolic dispersion relation can simultaneously behave as a reflective metal and an absorptive or emissive semiconductor for electromagnetic waves with orthogonal linear polarization states. Using an unconventional multilayer architecture, we demonstrate luminescent hyperbolic metasurfaces, wherein distributed semiconducting quantum wells display extreme absorption and emission polarization anisotropy. Through normally incident micro-photoluminescence measurements, we observe absorption anisotropies greater than a factor of 10 and degree-of-linear polarization of emission >0.9. We observe the modification of emission spectra and, by incorporating wavelength-scale gratings, show a controlled reduction of polarization anisotropy. We verify hyperbolic dispersion with numerical simulations that model the metasurface as a composite nanoscale structure and according to the effective medium approximation. Finally, we experimentally demonstrate >350% emission intensity enhancement relative to the bare semiconducting quantum wells
Eclipsing binaries in open clusters - III. V621 Per in χ Persei
V621 Persei is a detached eclipsing binary in the open cluster χ Persei, which is composed of an early B-type giant star and a main-sequence secondary component. From high-resolution spectroscopic observations and radial velocities from the literature, we determine the orbital period to be 25.5 d and the primary velocity semi-amplitude to be K= 64.5 ± 0.4 km s−1. No trace of the secondary star has been found in the spectrum. We solve the discovery light curves of this totally eclipsing binary and find that the surface gravity of the secondary star is log gB= 4.244 ± 0.054. We compare the absolute masses and radii of the two stars in the mass-radius diagram, for different possible values of the primary surface gravity, with the predictions of stellar models. We find that log gA≈ 3.55, in agreement with values found from fitting Balmer lines with synthetic profiles. The expected masses of the two stars are 12 and 6 M⊙ and the expected radii are 10 and 3 R⊙. The primary component is near the blue loop stage in its evolutio
KIC 4768731: a bright long-period roAp star in theKeplerfield
We report the identification of 61.45 d−1 (711.2 μHz) oscillations, with amplitudes of 62.6 μmag, in KIC 4768731 (HD 225914) using Kepler photometry. This relatively bright (V = 9.17) chemically peculiar star with spectral type A5 Vp SrCr(Eu) has previously been found to exhibit rotational modulation with a period of 5.21 d. Fourier analysis reveals a simple dipole pulsator with an amplitude that has remained stable over a 4-yr time span, but with a frequency that is variable. Analysis of high-resolution spectra yields stellar parameters of Teff = 8100 ± 200 K, log g = 4.0 ± 0.2, [Fe/H] = +0.31 ± 0.24 and v sin i = 14.8 ± 1.6 km s−1.
Line profile variations caused by rotation are also evident. Lines of Sr, Cr, Eu, Mg and Si are strongest when the star is brightest, while Y and Ba vary in antiphase with the other elements. The abundances of rare earth elements are only modestly enhanced compared to other roAp stars of similar Teff and log g. Radial velocities in the literature suggest a significant change over the past 30 yr, but the radial velocities presented here show no significant change over a period of 4 yr
In-Line-Test of Variability and Bit-Error-Rate of HfOx-Based Resistive Memory
Spatial and temporal variability of HfOx-based resistive random access memory
(RRAM) are investigated for manufacturing and product designs. Manufacturing
variability is characterized at different levels including lots, wafers, and
chips. Bit-error-rate (BER) is proposed as a holistic parameter for the write
cycle resistance statistics. Using the electrical in-line-test cycle data, a
method is developed to derive BERs as functions of the design margin, to
provide guidance for technology evaluation and product design. The proposed BER
calculation can also be used in the off-line bench test and build-in-self-test
(BIST) for adaptive error correction and for the other types of random access
memories.Comment: 4 pages. Memory Workshop (IMW), 2015 IEEE Internationa
A spectroscopic study of the open cluster NGC 6250
We present the chemical abundance analysis of 19 upper main-sequence stars of the young open
cluster NGC 6250 (log t∼7.42 yr). Thiswork is part of a project aimed at setting observational
constraints on the theory of atomic diffusion in stellar photospheres, by means of a systematic
study of the abundances of the chemical elements of early F-, A- and late B-type stars of
well-determined age. Our data set consists of low-, medium- and high-resolution spectra obtained with the Fibre Large Array Multi Element Spectrograph (FLAMES) instrument of the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT). To perform our analysis, we have developed a new suite of software tools for the chemical abundance analysis of stellar photospheres in local thermodynamical equilibrium. Together with the chemical composition of the stellar photospheres, we have provided new estimates of the cluster mean radial velocity, proper motion, refined the cluster membership, and we have given the stellar parameters including masses and fractional age. We find no evidence of statistically significant correlation between any of the parameters, including abundance and cluster age, except perhaps for an increase in Ba abundance with cluster age.We have proven that our new software tool may be successfully used for the chemical abundance analysis of large data sets of stellar spectra
ConXsense - Automated Context Classification for Context-Aware Access Control
We present ConXsense, the first framework for context-aware access control on
mobile devices based on context classification. Previous context-aware access
control systems often require users to laboriously specify detailed policies or
they rely on pre-defined policies not adequately reflecting the true
preferences of users. We present the design and implementation of a
context-aware framework that uses a probabilistic approach to overcome these
deficiencies. The framework utilizes context sensing and machine learning to
automatically classify contexts according to their security and privacy-related
properties. We apply the framework to two important smartphone-related use
cases: protection against device misuse using a dynamic device lock and
protection against sensory malware. We ground our analysis on a sociological
survey examining the perceptions and concerns of users related to contextual
smartphone security and analyze the effectiveness of our approach with
real-world context data. We also demonstrate the integration of our framework
with the FlaskDroid architecture for fine-grained access control enforcement on
the Android platform.Comment: Recipient of the Best Paper Awar
Perfect hypermomentum fluid: variational theory and equations of motion
The variational theory of the perfect hypermomentum fluid is developed. The
new type of the generalized Frenkel condition is considered. The Lagrangian
density of such fluid is stated, and the equations of motion of the fluid and
the Weyssenhoff-type evolution equation of the hypermomentum tensor are
derived. The expressions of the matter currents of the fluid (the canonical
energy-momentum 3-form, the metric stress-energy 4-form and the hypermomentum
3-form) are obtained. The Euler-type hydrodynamic equation of motion of the
perfect hypermomentum fluid is derived. It is proved that the motion of the
perfect fluid without hypermomentum in a metric-affine space coincides with the
motion of this fluid in a Riemann space.Comment: REVTEX, 23 pages, no figure
