A quick test for quality deterioration of milk powder, refined oil and atta, based on the indicator test solution was studied. The indicator test solution comprising NaOH and bromotIlytnol blue indicator remains stable for 6 mont1ls itl glass bottles. Depending on the acidity of the Sample, the colour changed from blue to light blue to green to yellow. The concentration of the indicator test solution is optimised for each product, viz., 4 ml for milk powder and refined oil and 2 ml for atta, to which 1 ml aqueous sample or oil is added which gives the colour change. The appearance of green colour is considered tIle cutoff point for inferior quality alld is based on the limits specified by the Bureau of Indian Standards for these products. The test has proved its efficacy in quality checking during storage of milk powder and deep fat frying of products in refined oils

Reliability of a Wave Equation Analysis in the Estimation of Static Bearing Capacity of a Vertical Pile--a Case Study

    Get PDF
Application of wave equation, in the analysis of pile behavior, under dynamic loading has started with Smith [9]. This paper presents a modified explicit numerical scheme, based on Smith\u27s approach, which retains the simplicity and minimum storage requirement of Smith\u27s scheme but offers a faster and more accurate solution near critical time step. Bearing capacity of pile is estimated through Poulos [8) scheme, after evaluating dynamic properties of soil from set value through this modified scheme. Observed load test results establish a good promise for this analysis

Effect of controlled doping on electrical properties and permittivity of PTSA doped polyanilines and their EMI shielding performance

Emeraldine base (EB) has been protonated with different concentration of para-toluene sulfonic acid (PTSA) to form doped polyanilines (PANIs). These samples have been characterized by various techniques and a detailed correlation between dopant concentration and structural, thermal, electrical and electromagnetic properties has been established. The FTIR/UV-Visible and EPR spectra confirm the formation of polarons as proto-generated charge carriers whose concentration follows the dopant concentration trend. It was also observed that increase in doping level leads to systematic improvement of electrical conductivity (1.2x1(-9) to 5.3 S/cm) as well as complex permittivity (epsilon'similar to 5.5 & epsilon"-0.6 to epsilon'similar to 22.3 & epsilon"similar to 24.6) with parallel improvement of electromagnetic (EM) radiation blocking capacity from -3.8 dB (for EB) to -23.9 dB (for 1.0 M PTSA doped Sample). Further, the attenuation was found to be critically dependent on dopant concentration, complex permittivity and electrical conductivity revealing that both polarization as well as conduction is important for achieving high attenuation. It was also observed that reflection is main phenomenon at low doping level whereas absorption becomes increasingly important at higher doping levels and extends dominant contribution towards total attenuatio

Wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) was used to follow the development of crystal size and strain during the staling of bread containing different additives. In this it was observed that one can classify the good anti-staling additives as gelatin, propylene glycol, maltodextrin and anti-staling enzyme corresponding to the order of increasing crystal size for a particular Bragg reflection in all the samples and correlate using DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) studies of all the bread compositions containing different additives. Water supply in an effort to cope with a much needed fire. According Permen PU No.20 of 2009, the supply of water for fire fighting purposes is obtained from natural sources one river; or artificial like a fire hydrant. Supply of water from natural sources have problems on location erratic with the scene and sediment-borne debris or the charging process tank fire truck. While the fire hydrants, water supply derived from the distribution of clean water that could be a solution to these problems and the location of fire hydrants more regularly. SPAM distribution network planning Sayung includes 8 villages that are Urban Area Sayung conducted from year 2014 to 2029, with the need for water distribution at year-end planning of 273.37 l/s. Based on the city's strategic location and access roads, and fire risk classification (Permen PU No.20 of 2009), the location of fire hydrants in Sayung spread in the village Sriwulan, Loireng, Gemulak, Purwosari, and Sidogemah the number 12 fire hydrants. Results fire flow analysis using WaterCAD V8i show fire hydrants can be met discharge and pressure (31 l / s and 1.5 bar) for 24 hours, so it does not interfere with domestic water needs and non-domestic

Rapid industrialization and population explosion in India has led to the migration of people from villages to cities, which generate thousands of tons of Municipal Solid Waste (viz. Kitchen waste) MSW (Viz. KW) daily. Jhansi City is well known district of Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh (India) with a geographical area of 502.75 thousand hectare. The district is situated in the South West corner of the region at 24º11' - 25º57' N latitude and 78º10' - 79º23' E longitudes. Population of Jhansi city is near about 4,79, 612. A detail study was conducted in four consecutive years to assess the potential and possibilities of MSW (Viz. KW) composting generated from Jhansi city, Uttar Pradesh. In the present study, we studied physico-chemical parameters and succession of microbial populations during composting process of MSW (Viz. KW) and found that the pH ranged between 7.1-7.9, Temperature 14-65.2°C, Organic Carbon 20-26 %, moisture content  22-66.7 %, nutrients N – 1.16 %, P – 0.04 %,  K – 0.34%, Na – 2.89 % and microbial colonies like Bacteria, fungi, and Actinomycetes were also present in large numbers.Temperature plays an important role in the growth of microbial colonies during composting of Municipal Solid waste (Viz. Kitchen Waste)

A Static Optimality Transformation with Applications to Planar Point Location

Over the last decade, there have been several data structures that, given a planar subdivision and a probability distribution over the plane, provide a way for answering point location queries that is fine-tuned for the distribution. All these methods suffer from the requirement that the query distribution must be known in advance. We present a new data structure for point location queries in planar triangulations. Our structure is asymptotically as fast as the optimal structures, but it requires no prior information about the queries. This is a 2D analogue of the jump from Knuth's optimum binary search trees (discovered in 1971) to the splay trees of Sleator and Tarjan in 1985. While the former need to know the query distribution, the latter are statically optimal. This means that we can adapt to the query sequence and achieve the same asymptotic performance as an optimum static structure, without needing any additional information.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure, a preliminary version appeared at SoCG 201

Pancreatic endocrine and exocrine function in children following near-total pancreatectomy for diffuse congenital hyperinsulinism.

Published onlineJournal ArticleCONTEXT: Congenital hyperinsulinism (CHI), the commonest cause of persistent hypoglycaemia, has two main histological subtypes: diffuse and focal. Diffuse CHI, if medically unresponsive, is managed with near-total pancreatectomy. Post-pancreatectomy, in addition to persistent hypoglycaemia, there is a very high risk of diabetes mellitus and pancreatic exocrine insufficiency. SETTING: International referral centre for the management of CHI. PATIENTS: Medically unresponsive diffuse CHI patients managed with near-total pancreatectomy between 1994 and 2012. INTERVENTION: Near-total pancreatectomy. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Persistent hypoglycaemia post near-total pancreatectomy, insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, clinical and biochemical (faecal elastase 1) pancreatic exocrine insufficiency. RESULTS: Of more than 300 patients with CHI managed during this time period, 45 children had medically unresponsive diffuse disease and were managed with near-total pancreatectomy. After near-total pancreatectomy, 60% of children had persistent hypoglycaemia requiring medical interventions. The incidence of insulin dependent diabetes mellitus was 96% at 11 years after surgery. Thirty-two patients (72%) had biochemical evidence of severe pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (Faecal elastase 1<100 µg/g). Clinical exocrine insufficiency was observed in 22 (49%) patients. No statistically significant difference in weight and height standard deviation score (SDS) was found between untreated subclinical pancreatic exocrine insufficiency patients and treated clinical pancreatic exocrine insufficiency patients. CONCLUSIONS: The outcome of diffuse CHI patients after near-total pancreatectomy is very unsatisfactory. The incidence of persistent hypoglycaemia and insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus is very high. The presence of clinical rather than biochemical pancreatic exocrine insufficiency should inform decisions about pancreatic enzyme supplementation

Obstructive Sleep Apnea – Current Perpectives

Obstructive sleep apnea is a common sleep related breathing disorder. The demand for sleep medicine services has increased exponentially since the recognition of sleep apnea as a disease in the 1960s. The involvement of dentists in the treatment of sleep apnea has increased. It is important that dentists are aware of the problem of sleep disorders and the potential they have to help in their management
