Vacuum type I spacetimes and aligned Papapetrou fields: symmetries

We analyze type I vacuum solutions admitting an isometry whose Killing 2--form is aligned with a principal bivector of the Weyl tensor, and we show that these solutions belong to a family of type I metrics which admit a group G3G_3 of isometries. We give a classification of this family and we study the Bianchi type for each class. The classes compatible with an aligned Killing 2--form are also determined. The Szekeres-Brans theorem is extended to non vacuum spacetimes with vanishing Cotton tensor.Comment: 19 pages; a reference adde

ApuA, a multifunctional x-glucan-degrading enzyme of Streptococcus suis, mediates adhesion to porcine epithelium and mucus

We have identified apuA in Streptococcus suis, which encodes a bifunctional amylopullulanase with conserved -amylase and pullulanase substrate-binding domains and catalytic motifs. ApuA exhibited properties typical of a Gram-positive surface protein, with a putative signal sequence and LPKTGE cell-wall-anchoring motif. A recombinant protein containing the predicted N-terminal -amylase domain of ApuA was shown to have -(1,4) glycosidic activity. Additionally, an apuA mutant of S. suis lacked the pullulanase -(1,6) glycosidic activity detected in a cell-surface protein extract of wild-type S. suis. ApuA was required for normal growth in complex medium containing pullulan as the major carbon source, suggesting that this enzyme plays a role in nutrient acquisition in vivo via the degradation of glycogen and food-derived starch in the nasopharyngeal and oral cavities. ApuA was shown to promote adhesion to porcine epithelium and mucus in vitro, highlighting a link between carbohydrate utilization and the ability of S. suis to colonize and infect the host

A topological charge selection rule for phase singularities

    Get PDF
We present an study of the dynamics and decay pattern of phase singularities due to the action of a system with a discrete rotational symmetry of finite order. A topological charge conservation rule is identified. The role played by the underlying symmetry is emphasized. An effective model describing the short range dynamics of the vortex clusters has been designed. A method to engineer any desired configuration of clusters of phase singularities is proposed. Its flexibility to create and control clusters of vortices is discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

XMM-Newton Observation of the Black Hole Microquasar GRS 1758-258

The XMM-Newton X-ray observatory pointed the galactic black hole candidate and microquasar GRS 1758-258 in September 2000 for about 10 ks during a program devoted to the scan of the Galactic Center regions. Preliminary results from EPIC MOS camera data are presented here. The data indicate that the source underwent a state transition from its standard low-hard state to an intermediate state. For the first time in this source the ultra-soft component of the accretion disk, which black hole binaries display in intermediate or high-soft states, was clearly detected and measured thanks to the high spectral capabilities of XMM-Newton.Comment: To appear in the Proc. of the Gamma-Ray Astrophysics 2001 Symposium, 4-6 April 2001, Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A.. An anisotropic cosmological model with isotropic background radiation

We present an exact solution of Einstein equations that describes a Bianchi type III spacetime with conformal expansion. The matter content is given by an anisotropic scalar field and two perfect fluids representing dust and isotropic radiation. Based on this solution, we construct a cosmological model that respects the evolution of the scale factor predicted in standard cosmology.Comment: 4 pages; contribution to the Proceedings of the 24th Spanish Relativity Meeting (ERE2001
