Maxon and roton measurements in nanoconfined He
We investigate the behavior of the collective excitations of adsorbed He
in an ordered hexagonal mesopore, examining the crossover from a thin film to a
confined fluid. Here we present the inelastic scattering results as a function
of filling at constant temperature. We find a monotonic transition of the maxon
excitation as a function of filling. This has been interpreted as corresponding
to an increasing density of the adsorbed helium, which approaches the bulk
value as filling increases. The roton minimum exhibits a more complicated
behavior that does not monotonically approach bulk values as filling increases.
The full pore scattering resembles the bulk liquid accompanied by a layer mode.
The maxon and roton scattering, taken together, at intermediate fillings does
not correspond to a single bulk liquid dispersion at negative, low, or high

Regrowth-related defect formation and evolution in 1 MeV amorphized (001) Ge
Geimplanted with 1MeV Si⁺ at a dose of 1×10¹⁵cm⁻² creates a buried amorphous layer that, upon regrowth, exhibits several forms of defects–end-of-range (EOR), regrowth-related, and clamshell defects. Unlike Si, no planar {311} defects are observed. The minimal EOR defects are small dotlike defects and are very unstable, dissolving between 450 and 550°C. This is in contrast to Si, where the EOR defects are very stable. The amorphous layer results in both regrowth-related defects and clamshell defects, which were more stable than the EOR damage.This work is supported by Semiconductor Research Corporation

Nucleation at the DNA supercoiling transition
Twisting DNA under a constant applied force reveals a thermally activated
transition into a state with a supercoiled structure known as a plectoneme.
Using transition state theory, we predict the rate of this plectoneme
nucleation to be of order 10^4 Hz. We reconcile this with experiments that have
measured hopping rates of order 10 Hz by noting that the viscosity of the bead
used to manipulate the DNA limits the measured rate. We find that the intrinsic
bending caused by disorder in the base-pair sequence is important for
understanding the free energy barrier that governs the transition. Both
analytic and numerical methods are used in the calculations. We provide
extensive details on the numerical methods for simulating the elastic rod model

The Globular Cluster Luminosity Function and Specific Frequency in Dwarf Elliptical Galaxies
The globular cluster luminosity function, specific globular cluster
frequency, S_N, specific globular cluster mass, T_MP, and globular cluster mass
fraction in dwarf elliptical galaxies are explored using the full 69 galaxy
sample of the HST WFPC2 Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy Snapshot Survey. The GCLFs of
the dEs are well-represented with a t_5 function with a peak at
M_{V,Z}^0(dE,HST) = -7.3 +/- 0.1. This is ~0.3 magnitudes fainter than the GCLF
peaks in giant spiral and elliptical galaxies, but the results are consistent
within the uncertainties. The bright-end slope of the luminosity distribution
has a power-law form with slope alpha = -1.9 +/- 0.1. The trend of increasing
S_N or T_MP with decreasing host galaxy luminosity is confirmed. The mean value
for T_MP in dE,N galaxies is about a factor of two higher than the mean value
for non-nucleated galaxies and the distributions of T_MP in dE,N and dE,noN
galaxies are statistically different. These data are combined with results from
the literature for a wide range of galaxy types and environments. At low host
galaxy masses the distribution of T_MP for dE,noN and dI galaxies are similar.
This supports the idea that one pathway for forming dE,noN galaxies is by the
stripping of dIs. The formation of nuclei and the larger values of T_MP in dE,N
galaxies may be due to higher star formation rates and star cluster formation

The Momentum Distribution of Liquid He
We present high-resolution neutron Compton scattering measurements of liquid
He below its renormalized Fermi temperature. Theoretical predictions are in
excellent agreement with the experimental data when instrumental resolution and
final state effects are accounted for. Our results resolve the long-standing
inconsistency between theoretical and experimental estimates of the average
atomic kinetic energy.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Cultural Resources Remote-Sensing Survey Of Areas Adjacent To Shamrock Island, Corpus Christi Bay, Nueces County, Texas
Coastal Environments Inc. (CEI) conducted a cultural resources remote-sensing survey of two areas adjacent to Shamrock Island, Nueces County, Texas. The northern-most of these covers 56.38 hectares (139.31 acres), while the southern-most survey area encompasses 44.8 hectares (110.69 acres). These are proposed locations of sand borrow areas to be used by the Nature Conservancy, Texas Coast Office for the Shamrock Island Restoration Project. Data were collected by Naismith Marine of Houston, Texas on December 15th and 17th, 2014 and supervised by the principal investigator and the remotesensing specialist from CEI. Remote-sensing equipment used in the project include a Geometrics 882 cesium magnetometer, an Edgetech 4125 dual frequency side-scan sonar system, and a digital recording fathometer. Positioning was performed with a differential global positioning system (DGPS) with corrections provided by a Virtual Reference Station (VRS). Upon delivery to CEI, additional processing and analysis was performed on the data and relevant archival work performed in order to determine the cultural significance of remote-sensing anomalies. While the remote-sensing data delineate an array of modern oil targets, two targets of possible cultural significance (designated anomalies M11 and M16) were identified. It is recommended that these targets either be avoided or that further investigations are carried out to determine their cultural significance
