Estimation of linkage disequilibrium in a sample of the United Kingdom dairy cattle population using unphased genotypes
The association between genetic marker alleles was estimated for two regions of the bovine genome from a random sample of 50 young dairy bulls born in the United Kingdom between 1988 and 1995. Microsatellite marker genotypes were obtained for six markers on chromosome 2 and seven markers on chromosome 6, spanning 38 and 20 cM, respectively. Two different methods, which do not require family information, were used to estimate population haplotype frequencies. Haplotype frequencies were estimated for pairs of loci using the expectation-maximization algorithm and for all linked loci using a Bayesian approach via a Markov chain-Monte Carlo algorithm. Significant (P = 0.0007) linkage disequilibrium was detected between pairs of loci in syntenic groups (that is, loci in the same linkage group), extending to about 10 cM. No significant linkage disequilibrium was detected between markers in nonsyntenic regions. Given the observed level of linkage disequilibrium, mapping methods based on population-wide association might provide a better resolution than traditional quantitative trait loci mapping methods in the U.K. dairy cattle population and may reduce the required sample sizes of the experiments
A Comparison of Near-Infrared Photometry and Spectra for Y Dwarfs with a New Generation of Cool Cloudy Models
We present YJHK photometry, or a subset, for the six Y dwarfs discovered in
WISE data by Cushing et al.. The data were obtained using NIRI on the Gemini
North telescope. We also present a far-red spectrum obtained using GMOS-North
for WISEPC J205628.90+145953.3. We compare the data to Morley et al. (2012)
models, which include cloud decks of sulfide and chloride condensates. We find
that the models with these previously neglected clouds can reproduce the energy
distributions of T9 to Y0 dwarfs quite well, other than near 5um where the
models are too bright. This is thought to be because the models do not include
departures from chemical equilibrium caused by vertical mixing, which would
enhance the abundance of CO, decreasing the flux at 5um. Vertical mixing also
decreases the abundance of NH_3, which would otherwise have strong absorption
features at 1.03um and 1.52um that are not seen in the Y0 WISEPC
J205628.90+145953.3. We find that the five Y0 to Y0.5 dwarfs have 300 < T_eff K
< 450, 4.0 < log g < 4.5 and f_sed ~ 3. These temperatures and gravities imply
a mass range of 5 - 15 M_Jupiter and ages around 5 Gyr. We suggest that WISEP
J182831.08+265037.8 is a binary system, as this better explains its luminosity
and color. We find that the data can be made consistent with observed trends,
and generally consistent with the models, if the system is composed of a T_eff
= 325 K and log g ~ 4.0
secondary, corresponding to masses of 10 and 7 M_Jupiter and an age around 2
Gyr. If our deconvolution is correct, then the T_eff = 300 K cloud-free model
fluxes at K and W2 are too faint by 0.5 - 1.0 magnitudes. We will address this
discrepancy in our next generation of models, which will incorporate water

Is Random Close Packing of Spheres Well Defined?
Despite its long history, there are many fundamental issues concerning random
packings of spheres that remain elusive, including a precise definition of
random close packing (RCP). We argue that the current picture of RCP cannot be
made mathematically precise and support this conclusion via a molecular
dynamics study of hard spheres using the Lubachevsky-Stillinger compression
algorithm. We suggest that this impasse can be broken by introducing the new
concept of a maximally random jammed state, which can be made precise.Comment: 6 pages total, 2 figure
A global assessment of Echinococcus multilocularis infections in domestic dogs: proposing a framework to overcome past methodological heterogeneity
Echinococcus multilocularis, the aetiological agent of human Alveolar Echinococcosis, is transmitted between small mammals and wild or domestic canids. Dogs infected with E. multilocularis as dead-end hosts. Whereas E. multilocularis infections in wild hosts and humans have been well-studied in recent decades, infections in domestic dogs are sparsely reported. This literature review and meta-analysis highlighted gaps in the available data and provided a re-assessment of the global distribution of domestic dog E. multilocularis infections. We found 46 published articles documenting the prevalence of E. multilocularis in domestic dogs from 21 countries across Europe, Asia and North America. Apparent prevalence estimates ranged from 0.00% (0.00–0.33%) in Germany to 55.50% (26.67–81.12%) in China. Most studies were conducted in areas of high human Alveolar Echinococcosis. By accounting for reassessed diagnostic sensitivity and specificity, we estimated true prevalence in a subset of studies, which varied between 0.00% (0.00–12.42%) and 41.09% (21.12–65.81%), as these true prevalence estimates were seldom reported in the articles themselves. Articles also showed a heavy emphasis on rural dogs, dismissing urban ones, which is concerning due to the role urbanisation plays in the transmission of zoonotic diseases, especially those utilising pets as definitive hosts. Lastly, population studies on canine Alveolar Echinococcosis were absent, highlighting the relative focus on human rather than animal health. We thus developed a framework for investigating domestic dog E. multilocularis infections and performing risk assessment of dog-associated transmission to fill the gaps found in the literature
On the derivation of the t-J model: electron spectrum and exchange interactions in narrow energy bands
A derivation of the t-J model of a highly-correlated solid is given starting
from the general many-electron Hamiltonian with account of the
non-orthogonality of atomic wave functions. Asymmetry of the Hubbard subbands
(i.e. of ``electron'' and ``hole''cases) for a nearly half-filled bare band is
demonstrated. The non-orthogonality corrections are shown to lead to occurrence
of indirect antiferromagnetic exchange interaction even in the limit of the
infinite on-site Coulomb repulsion. Consequences of this treatment for the
magnetism formation in narrow energy bands are discussed. Peculiarities of the
case of ``frustrated'' lattices, which contain triangles of nearest neighbors,

Spin-dependent electrical transport in ion-beam sputter deposited Fe-Cr multilayers
The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity and
magnetoresistance of Xe-ion beam sputtered Fe-Cr multilayers has been
investigated. The electrical resistivity between 5 and 300 K in the fully
ferromagnetic state, obtained by applying a field beyond the saturation field
(H_sat) necessary for the antiferromagnetic(AF)-ferromagnetic(FM) field-induced
transition, shows evidence of spin-disorder resistivity as in crystalline Fe
and an s-d scattering contribution (as in 3d metals and alloys). The sublattice
magnetization m(T) in these multilayers has been calculated in terms of the
planar and interlayer exchange energies. The additional spin-dependent
scattering \Delta \rho (T) = \rho(T,H=0)_AF - \rho(T,H=H_sat)_FM in the AF
state over a wide range of temperature is found to be proportional to the
sublattice magnetization, both \Delta \rho(T) and m(T) reducing along with the
antiferromagnetic fraction. At intermediate fields, the spin-dependent part of
the electrical resistivity (\rho_s (T)) fits well to the power law \rho_s (T) =
b - cT^\alpha where c is a constant and b and \alpha are functions of H. At low
fields \alpha \approx 2 and the intercept b decreases with H much the same way
as the decrease of \Delta \rho (T) with T. A phase diagram (T vs. H_sat) is
obtained for the field- induced AF to FM transition. Comparisons are made
between the present investigation and similar studies using dc magnetron
sputtered and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) grown Fe-Cr multilayers.Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Conductance Fluctuations in a Metallic Wire Interrupted by a Tunnel Junction
The conductance fluctuations of a metallic wire which is interrupted by a
small tunnel junction has been explored experimentally. In this system, the
bias voltage V, which drops almost completely inside the tunnel barrier, is
used to probe the energy dependence of conductance fluctuations due to disorder
in the wire. We find that the variance of the fluctuations is directly
proportional to V. The experimental data are consistently described by a
theoretical model with two phenomenological parameters: the phase breaking time

An L Band Spectrum of the Coldest Brown Dwarf
The coldest brown dwarf, WISE 0855, is the closest known planetary-mass,
free-floating object and has a temperature nearly as cold as the solar system
gas giants. Like Jupiter, it is predicted to have an atmosphere rich in
methane, water, and ammonia, with clouds of volatile ices. WISE 0855 is faint
at near-infrared wavelengths and emits almost all its energy in the
mid-infrared. Skemer et al. 2016 presented a spectrum of WISE 0855 from 4.5-5.1
micron (M band), revealing water vapor features. Here, we present a spectrum of
WISE 0855 in L band, from 3.4-4.14 micron. We present a set of atmosphere
models that include a range of compositions (metallicities and C/O ratios) and
water ice clouds. Methane absorption is clearly present in the spectrum. The
mid-infrared color can be better matched with a methane abundance that is
depleted relative to solar abundance. We find that there is evidence for water
ice clouds in the M band spectrum, and we find a lack of phosphine spectral
features in both the L and M band spectra. We suggest that a deep continuum
opacity source may be obscuring the near-infrared flux, possibly a deep
phosphorous-bearing cloud, ammonium dihyrogen phosphate. Observations of WISE
0855 provide critical constraints for cold planetary atmospheres, bridging the
temperature range between the long-studied solar system planets and accessible
exoplanets. JWST will soon revolutionize our understanding of cold brown dwarfs
with high-precision spectroscopy across the infrared, allowing us to study
their compositions and cloud properties, and to infer their atmospheric

Elements of care that matter:Perspectives of families with multiple problems
The severe and often persistent problems of families with multiple problems (FMP) call for better understanding of how interventions can improve outcomes in these families. Perspectives of FMP on the crucial elements of interventions may strongly support improvement by providing cues on how to realize positive change. We therefore explored the views of parents and children in FMP regarding helpful and less helpful elements of various interventions. We interviewed 24 parents and 4 children about their perspectives, using a semi-structured interview guide comprising themes that were chosen by the target group. Participants reported 11 elements that contribute to the effectiveness of care, categorized under three main themes: the characteristics of the practitioner, the content of interventions, and the structure of interventions. The perspectives of FMP show the following activities to be promising: routine reflection on the non-judgmental and positive approach of practitioners, more direct focus on children, focus on the underlying cause of behavior, activation of families’ social network, the school and other professionals around the family, and creation of more possibilities for long-term and flexible support. Perspectives of FMP on the content and provision of care should be better embedded in interventions. This may help to tailor interventions to their wishes and needs, which in turn can contribute to more positive outcomes of care
