The JCMT dense gas survey of the Perseus Molecular Cloud
We present the results of a large-scale survey of the very dense gas in the
Perseus molecular cloud using HCO+ and HCN (J = 4 - 3) transitions. We have
used this emission to trace the structure and kinematics of gas found in pre-
and protostellar cores, as well as in outflows. We compare the HCO+/HCN data,
highlighting regions where there is a marked discrepancy in the spectra of the
two emission lines. We use the HCO+ to identify positively protostellar
outflows and their driving sources, and present a statistical analysis of the
outflow properties that we derive from this tracer. We find that the relations
we calculate between the HCO+ outflow driving force and the Menv and Lbol of
the driving source are comparable to those obtained from similar outflow
analyses using 12CO, indicating that the two molecules give reliable estimates
of outflow properties. We also compare the HCO+ and the HCN in the outflows,
and find that the HCN traces only the most energetic outflows, the majority of
which are driven by young Class 0 sources. We analyse the abundances of HCN and
HCO+ in the particular case of the IRAS 2A outflows, and find that the HCN is
much more enhanced than the HCO+ in the outflow lobes. We suggest that this is
indicative of shock-enhancement of HCN along the length of the outflow; this
process is not so evident for HCO+, which is largely confined to the outflow

Is the LITE version of the usability metric for user experience (UMUX-LITE) a reliable tool to support rapid assessment of new healthcare technology?
Objective To ascertain the reliability of a standardised, short-scale measure of satisfaction in the use of new healthcare technology i.e., the LITE version of the usability metric for user experience (UMUX-LITE). Whilst previous studies have demonstrated the reliability of UMUX-LITE, and its relationship with measures of likelihood to recommend a product, such as the Net Promoter Score (NPS) in other sectors no such testing has been undertaken with healthcare technology. Materials and methods Six point-of-care products at different stages of development were assessed by 120 healthcare professionals. UMUX-LITE was used to gather their satisfaction in use, and NPS to declare their intention to promote the product. Inferential statistics were used to: i) ascertain the reliability of UMUX-LITE, and ii) assess the relationship between UMUX-LITE and NPS at different stages of products development. Results UMUX-LITE showed an acceptable reliability (α = 0.7) and a strong positive correlation with NPS (r = 0.455, p < .001). This is similar to findings in other fields of application. The level of product development did not affect the UMUX-LITE scores, while the stage of development was a significant predictor (R2 = 0.49) of the intention to promote. Discussion and conclusion Practitioners may apply UMUX-LITE alone, or in combination with the NPS, to complement interview and ‘homemade’ scales to investigate the quality of new products at different stages of development. This shortened scale is appropriate for use in the context of healthcare in which busy professionals have a minimal amount of time to support innovation
Why you need to include human factors in clinical and empirical studies of in vitro point of care devices? Review and future perspectives
Use of in-vitro point of care devices - intended as tests performed out of laboratories and near patient - is increasing in clinical environments. International standards indicate that interaction assessment should not end after the product release, yet human factors methods are frequently not included in clinical and empirical studies of these devices. Whilst the literature confirms some advantages of bed-side tests compared to those in laboratories there is a lack of knowledge of the risks associated with their use. This article provides a review of approaches applied by clinical researchers to model the use of in-vitro testing. Results suggest that only a few studies have explored human factor approaches. Furthermore, when researchers investigated people-device interaction these were predominantly limited to qualitative and not standardised approaches. The methodological failings and limitations of these studies, identified by us, demonstrate the growing need to integrate human factors methods in the medical field
Molecular Tracers of Embedded Star Formation in Ophiuchus
In this paper we analyze nine SCUBA cores in Ophiuchus using the
second-lowest rotational transitions of four molecular species (12CO, 13CO,
C18O, and C17O) to search for clues to the evolutionary state and
star-formation activity within each core. Specifically, we look for evidence of
outflows, infall, and CO depletion. The line wings in the CO spectra are used
to detect outflows, spectral asymmetries in 13CO are used to determine infall
characteristics, and a comparison of the dust emission (from SCUBA
observations) and gas emission (from C18O) is used to determine the fractional
CO freeze-out.
Through comparison with Spitzer observations of protostellar sources in
Ophiuchus, we discuss the usefulness of CO and its isotopologues as the sole
indicators of the evolutionary state of each core. This study is an important
pilot project for the JCMT Legacy Survey of the Gould Belt (GBS) and the
Galactic Plane (JPS), which intend to complement the SCUBA-2 dust continuum
observations with HARP observations of 12CO, 13CO, C18O, and C17O J = 3 - 2 in
order to determine whether or not the cold dust clumps detected by SCUBA-2 are
protostellar or starless objects.
Our classification of the evolutionary state of the cores (based on molecular
line maps and SCUBA observations) is in agreement with the Spitzer designation
for six or seven of the nine SCUBA cores. However, several important caveats
exist in the interpretation of these results, many of which large mapping
surveys like the GBS may be able to overcome to provide a clearer picture of

On the ubiquity of molecular anions in the dense interstellar medium
Results are presented from a survey for molecular anions in seven nearby
Galactic star-forming cores and molecular clouds. The hydrocarbon anion C6H- is
detected in all seven target sources, including four sources where no anions
have been previously detected: L1172, L1389, L1495B and TMC-1C. The C6H-/C6H
column density ratio is greater than about 1.0% in every source, with a mean
value of 3.0% (and standard deviation 0.92%). Combined with previous
detections, our results show that anions are ubiquitous in dense clouds
wherever C6H is present. The C6H-/C6H ratio is found to show a positive
correlation with molecular hydrogen number density, and with the apparent age
of the cloud. We also report the first detection of C4H- in TMC-1 (at 4.8-sigma
confidence), and derive an anion-to-neutral ratio C4H-/C4H = (1.2 +- 0.4) x
10^-5 (= 0.0012 +- 0.0004%). Such a low value compared with C6H- highlights the
need for a revised radiative electron attachment rate for C4H. Chemical model
calculations show that the observed C4H- could be produced as a result of
reactions of oxygen atoms with C5H- and C6H-
Correlated Photons from Collective Excitations of Three-Level Atomic Ensemble
We systematically study the interaction between two quantized optical fields
and a cyclic atomic ensemble driven by a classic optical field. This so-called
atomic cyclic ensemble consists of three-level atoms with Delta-type
transitions due to the symmetry breaking, which can also be implemented in the
superconducting quantum circuit by Yu-xi Liu et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 95,
087001 (2005)]. We explore the dynamic mechanisms to creating the quantum
entanglements among photon states, and between photons and atomic collective
excitations by the coherent manipulation of the atom-photon system. It is shown
that the quantum information can be completely transferred from one quantized
optical mode to another, and the quantum information carried by the two
quantized optical fields can be stored in the collective modes of this atomic
ensemble by adiabatically controlling the classic field Rabi frequencies.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure
Embodied narratives of recovery: a phenomenology of cardiac rehabilitation
Adopting a phenomenologically inflected approach, which recognizes the role of the body in the constitution of experience, this thesis examines the experience of heart disease and the process of ‘narrativization’ of the illness experience. The body, as the locus of intentionality, is given in experience, yet at the same time it is constructed as an object of medicine. The body of experience, it is argued, exists in tension with the textual body of medical science. This thesis traces a brief history of the medicalisation of the body, from the anatomy theatres of early modern Europe, to the clinical encounter in its various forms; from the doctor-patient relationship to the nurse-patient interaction in the cardiac rehabilitation clinics of today. It is argued that ‘illness narratives’ represent more than a lay response to objectifying medical discourses and practices. Such narratives are in fact constitutive of experience and, as such, are exemplifying practices. It is also argued that the body is possessed of a memory and, to illustrate this further, I present research conducted among people who have experience of heart disease, surgery, and cardiac rehabilitation. This ‘memory of the body’ is that which, to some extent, is lost in the dehumanising spaces of medical science, but I assert that it is by way of the body’s remembered capacities that selfhood is re-established. An issue that drives this thesis is the question of whether remaking the body, during the difficult process of recovery and cardiac rehabilitation, entails a remaking of the self. Illness, as a medicalised phenomenon, disrupts the biographical trajectory of the sick person, severing affective ties to family, friends and community. It effectively dislocates the experience of the embodied person. This thesis is concerned principally with the means by which the person relocates himself or herself
Cytotoxic Aggregation and Amyloid Formation by the Myostatin Precursor Protein
Myostatin, a negative regulator of muscle growth, has been implicated in sporadic inclusion body myositis (sIBM). sIBM is the most common age-related muscle-wastage disease with a pathogenesis similar to that of amyloid disorders such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Myostatin precursor protein (MstnPP) has been shown to associate with large molecular weight filamentous inclusions containing the Alzheimer's amyloid beta peptide in sIBM tissue, and MstnPP is upregulated following ER stress. The mechanism for how MstnPP contributes to disease pathogenesis is unknown. Here, we show for the first time that MstnPP is capable of forming amyloid fibrils in vitro. When MstnPP-containing Escherichia coli inclusion bodies are refolded and purified, a proportion of MstnPP spontaneously misfolds into amyloid-like aggregates as characterised by electron microscopy and binding of the amyloid-specific dye thioflavin T. When subjected to a slightly acidic pH and elevated temperature, the aggregates form straight and unbranched amyloid fibrils 15 nm in diameter and also exhibit higher order amyloid structures. Circular dichroism spectroscopy reveals that the amyloid fibrils are dominated by β-sheet and that their formation occurs via a conformational change that occurs at a physiologically relevant temperature. Importantly, MstnPP aggregates and protofibrils have a negative effect on the viability of myoblasts. These novel results show that the myostatin precursor protein is capable of forming amyloid structures in vitro with implications for a role in sIBM pathogenesis
Phase-dependent light propagation in atomic vapors
Light propagation in an atomic medium whose coupled electronic levels form a
diamond-configuration exhibits a critical dependence on the input conditions.
In particular, the relative phase of the input fields gives rise to
interference phenomena in the electronic excitation whose interplay with
relaxation processes determines the stationary state. We integrate numerically
the Maxwell-Bloch equations and observe two metastable behaviors for the
relative phase of the propagating fields corresponding to two possible
interference phenomena. These phenomena are associated to separate types of
response along propagation, minimize dissipation, and are due to atomic
coherence. These behaviors could be studied in gases of isotopes of
alkali-earth atoms with zero nuclear spin, and offer new perspectives in

Molecular line contamination in the SCUBA-2 450 {\mu}m and 850 {\mu}m continuum data
Observations of the dust emission using millimetre/submillimetre bolometer
arrays can be contaminated by molecular line flux, such as flux from 12CO. As
the brightest molecular line in the submillimetre, it is important to quantify
the contribution of CO flux to the dust continuum bands. Conversion factors
were used to convert molecular line integrated intensities to flux detected by
bolometer arrays in mJy per beam. These factors were calculated for 12CO line
integrated intensities to the SCUBA-2 850 {\mu}m and 450 {\mu}m bands. The
conversion factors were then applied to HARP 12CO 3-2 maps of NGC 1333 in the
Perseus complex and NGC 2071 and NGC 2024 in the Orion B molecular cloud
complex to quantify the respective 12CO flux contribution to the 850 {\mu}m
dust continuum emission. Sources with high molecular line contamination were
analysed in further detail for molecular outflows and heating by nearby stars
to determine the cause of the 12CO contribution. The majority of sources had a
12CO 3-2 flux contribution under 20 per cent. However, in regions of molecular
outflows, the 12CO can dominate the source dust continuum (up to 79 per cent
