Cleaning up Eta Carinae: Detection of Ammonia in the Homunculus
We report the first detection of ammonia in the Homunculus nebula around eta
Carinae, which is also the first detection of emission from a polyatomic
molecule in this or any other luminous blue variable (LBV) nebula. Observations
of the NH3 (J,K)=(3,3) inversion transition made with the Australia Telescope
Compact Array reveal emission at locations where infrared H2 emission had been
detected previously, near the strongest dust emission in the core of the
Homunculus. We also detect ammonia emission from the so-called ``strontium
filament'' in the equatorial disk. The presence of NH3 around eta Car hints
that molecular shells around some Wolf-Rayet stars could have originated in
prior LBV eruptions, rather than in cool red supergiant winds or the ambient
interstellar medium. Combined with the lack of any CO detection, NH3 seems to
suggest that the Homunculus is nitrogen rich like the ionized ejecta around eta
Car. It also indicates that the Homunculus is a unique laboratory in which to
study unusual molecule and dust chemistry, as well as their rapid formation in
a nitrogen-rich environment around a hot star. We encourage future observations
of other transitions like NH3 (1,1) and (2,2), related molecules like N2H+, and

A deep wide-field sub-mm survey of the Carina Nebula complex
The Great Nebula in Carina is a superb location in which to study the physics
of violent massive star-formation and the resulting feedback effects, including
cloud dispersal and triggered star-formation. In order to reveal the cold dusty
clouds in the Carina Nebula complex, we used the Large APEX Bolometer Camera
LABOCA at the APEX telescope to map a 1.25 deg x 1.25 deg (= 50 x 50 pc^2)
region at 870 micrometer. From a comparison to Halpha images we infer that
about 6% of the 870 micrometer flux in the observed area is likely free-free
emission from the HII region, while about 94% of the flux is very likely
thermal dust emission. The total (dust + gas) mass of all clouds for which our
map is sensitive is ~ 60 000 Msun, in good agreement with the mass of the
compact clouds in this region derived from 13CO line observations. We generally
find good agreement in the cloud morphology seen at 870 micrometer and the
Spitzer 8 micrometer emission maps, but also identify a prominent infrared dark
cloud. Finally, we construct a radiative transfer model for the Carina Nebula
complex that reproduces the observed integrated spectral energy distribution
reasonably well. Our analysis suggests a total gas + dust mass of about 200000
Msun in the investigated area; most of this material is in the form of
molecular clouds, but a widely distributed component of (partly) atomic gas,
containing up to ~ 50% of the total mass, may also be present. Currently, only
some 10% of the gas is in sufficiently dense clouds to be immediately available
for future star formation, but this fraction may increase with time owing to
the ongoing compression of the strongly irradiated clouds and the expected

Spitzer Space Telescope observations of the Carina Nebula: The steady march of feedback-driven star formation
We report the first results of imaging the Carina Nebula with Spitzer/IRAC,
providing a catalog of point sources and YSOs based on SED fits. We discuss
several aspects of the extended emission, including dust pillars that result
when a clumpy molecular cloud is shredded by massive star feedback. There are
few "extended green objects" (EGOs) normally taken as signposts of outflow
activity, and none of the HH jets detected optically are seen as EGOs. A
population of "extended red objects" tends to be found around OB stars, some
with clear bow-shocks. These are dusty shocks where stellar winds collide with
flows off nearby clouds. Finally, the relative distributions of O stars and
subclusters of YSOs as compared to dust pillars shows that while some YSOs are
located within pillars, many more stars and YSOs reside just outside pillar
heads. We suggest that pillars are transient phenomena, part of a continuous
outwardly propagating wave of star formation driven by massive star feedback.
As pillars are destroyed, they leave newly formed stars in their wake, which
are then subsumed into the young OB association. Altogether, the current
generation of YSOs shows no strong deviation from a normal IMF. The number of
YSOs suggests a roughly constant star-formation rate over the past 3Myr,
implying that star formation in pillars constitutes an important mechanism to
construct unbound OB associations. Accelerated pillars may give birth to O-type

The applicability of commonly used predictive scoring systems in Indigenous Australians with sepsis: An observational study
Background Indigenous Australians suffer a disproportionate burden of sepsis, however, the performance of scoring systems that predict mortality in Indigenous patients with critical illness is incompletely defined. Materials and methods The study was performed at an Australian tertiary-referral hospital between January 2014 and June 2017, and enrolled consecutive Indigenous and non-Indigenous adults admitted to ICU with sepsis. The ability of the ANZROD, APACHE-II, APACHE-III, SAPS-II, SOFA and qSOFA scores to predict death before ICU discharge in the two populations was compared. Results There were 442 individuals enrolled in the study, 145 (33%) identified as Indigenous. Indigenous patients were younger than non-Indigenous patients (median (interquartile range (IQR) 53 (43-60) versus 65 (52-73) years, p = 0.0001) and comorbidity was more common (118/145 (81%) versus 204/297 (69%), p = 0.005). Comorbidities that were more common in the Indigenous patients included diabetes mellitus (84/145 (58%) versus 67/297 (23%), p<0.0001), renal disease (56/145 (39%) versus 29/297 (10%), p<0.0001) and cardiovascular disease (58/145 (40%) versus 83/297 (28%), p = 0.01). The use of supportive care (including vasopressors, mechanical ventilation and renal replacement therapy) was similar in Indigenous and non-Indigenous patients, and the two populations had an overall case-fatality rate that was comparable (17/145 (12%) and 38/297 (13%) (p = 0.75)), although Indigenous patients died at a younger age (median (IQR): 54 (50-60) versus 70 (61-76) years, p = 0.0001). There was no significant difference in the ability of any the scores to predict mortality in the two populations. Conclusions Although the crude case-fatality rates of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians admitted to ICU with sepsis is comparable, Indigenous patients die at a much younger age. Despite this, the ability of commonly used scoring systems to predict outcome in Indigenous Australians is similar to that of non-Indigenous Australians, supporting their use in ICUs with a significant Indigenous patient population and in clinical trials that enrol Indigenous Australians
Eddy covariance measurements of sea spray particles over the Atlantic Ocean
International audienceMost estimates of sea spray aerosol source functions have used indirect means to infer the rate of production as a function of wind speed. Only recently has the technology become available to make high frequency measurements of aerosol concentration suitable for direct eddy correlation determination of the particle flux. This was accomplished in this study by combining a newly developed fast aerosol particle counter with an ultrasonic anemometer which allowed for eddy covariance measurements of size-segregated particle fluxes. The aerosol instrument is the Compact Lightweight Aerosol Spectrometer Probe (CLASP) ? capable of measuring 8-channel size spectra for mean radii between 0.15 and 0.35 ?m at 10 Hz. The first successful measurements were made during the WASFAB (Waves, Air Sea Fluxes, Aerosol and Bubbles) field campaign in October 2005 in Duck (NC, USA). The Giant Pillars of the Carina Nebula
Results are presented from a multi-wavelength study of the giant pillars
within the Carina Nebula. Using near-IR data from 2MASS, mid-IR data from MSX,
843MHz radio continuum maps from the MOST, and molecular line and continuum
observations from the SEST, we investigate the nature of the pillars and search
for evidence of ongoing star formation within them. Photodissociation regions
(PDRs) exist across the whole nebula and trace the giant pillars, as well as
many ridges, filaments, and condensations (Av > 7 mag). Morphological
similarities between emission features at 21um and 843MHz adjacent to the PDRs,
suggests that the molecular material has been carved by the intense stellar
winds and UV radiation from the nearby massive stars. In addition, star forming
cores are found at the tips of several of the pillars. Using a stellar density
distribution, several candidate embedded clusters are also found. One is
clearly seen in the 2MASS images and is located within a dense core
(G287.84-0.82). A search for massive young stellar objects and compact HII
regions using mid-IR colour criteria, reveal twelve candidates across the
complex. Grey-body fits to SEDs for four of these objects are suggestive of
OB-stars. We find that massive star formation in the Carina Nebula is occurring
across the whole complex and confirm it has been continuous over the past 3

Results of the British Society of Gastroenterology supporting women in gastroenterology mentoring scheme pilot.
Introduction: Mentorship has long been recognised as beneficial in the business world and has more recently been endorsed by medical and academic professional bodies. Recruitment of women into gastroenterology and leadership roles has traditionally been difficult. The Supporting Women in Gastroenterology network developed this pilot scheme for female gastroenterologists 5 years either side of the Completion Certificate of Specialist Training (CCST) to examine the role that mentorship could play in improving this discrepancy. Method: Female gastroenterology trainees and consultant gastroenterologists within 5 years either side of CCST were invited to participate as mentees. Consultant gastroenterologists of both genders were invited to become mentors. 35 pairs of mentor:mentees were matched and completed the scheme over 1âyear. Training was provided. Results: The majority of the mentees found the sessions useful (82%) and enjoyable (77%), with the benefit of having time and space to discuss professional or personal challenges with a gastroenterologist who is not a colleague. In the longitudinal study of job satisfaction, work engagement, burnout, resilience, self-efficacy, self-compassion and work-life balance, burnout scale showed a small but non significant improvement over the year (probably an effect of small sample size). Personal accomplishment improved significantly. The main challenges were geography, available time to meet and pair matching. The majority of mentors surveyed found the scheme effective, satisfying, mutually beneficial (70%) and enjoyable (78%). Conclusion: Mentorship is shown to be beneficial despite the challenges and is likely to improve the recruitment and retention of women into gastroenterology and leadership roles, but is likely to benefit gastroenterologists of both genders
An X-ray survey of low-mass stars in Trumpler 16 with Chandra
We identify and characterize low-mass stars in the ~3 Myr old Trumpler 16
(Tr16) region by means of a deep Chandra X-ray observation, and study their
optical and near-IR properties. We compare X-ray activity of Tr16 stars with
known characteristics of Orion and Cygnus OB2 stars. We analyzed a 88.4 ksec
Chandra ACIS-I observation pointed at the center of Tr16. Because of diffuse
X-ray emission, source detection was performed using the PWDetect code for two
different energy ranges: 0.5-8.0 keV and 0.9-8.0 keV. Results were merged into
a single final list. We positionally correlate X-ray sources with optical and
2MASS catalogues. Source events were extracted with the IDL-based routine
ACIS-Extract. X-ray variability was characterized using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov
test and spectra were fitted by using XSPEC. X-ray spectra of early-type,
massive stars were analyzed individually. Our list of X-ray sources consists of
1035 entries, 660 of which have near-IR counterparts and are probably
associated with Tr16 members. From near-IR color-color and color-magnitudes
diagrams we compute individual masses of stars and their Av values. About 15%
of the near-IR counterparts show disk-induced excesses. X-ray variability is
found in 77 sources. X-ray emission from OB stars appear softer than the
low-mass stars. The Tr16 region has a very rich population of low-mass X-ray
emitting stars. An important fraction of its circumstellar disks survive the
intense radiation field of its massive stars. Stars with masses 1.5-2.5 Mo
display X-ray activity similar to that of stars in Cyg OB2 but much less

âItâs better than daytime televisionâ: questioning the socio-spatial impacts of massage parlours on residential communities
It has been shown that street sex work is problematic for some communities, but there is less evidence of the effects of brothels. Emerging research also suggests that impact discourses outlined by residential communities and in regulatory policies should be critiqued, because they are often based on minority community voices, and limited tangible evidence is used to masquerade wider moral viewpoints about the place of sex work. Using a study of residents living in close proximity to brothels in Blackpool, this paper argues that impact is socially and spatially fluid. Impact needs to be evaluated in a more nuanced manner, which is considerate of the heterogeneity of (even one type of) sex work, and the community in question. Brothels in Blackpool had a variety of roles in the everyday socio-spatial fabric; thus also questioning the common assumption that sex work only impacts negatively on residential communities
