π-Cation interactions as the origin of the weak absorption at 532 nm observed in tryptophan-containing polypeptides
We have previously reported that bovine serum albumin (BSA) and other proteins that do not contain prosthetic groups exhibited a weak light absorption in the visible, only detectable by pulsed laser-induced optoacoustic spectroscopy (LIOAS). Human serum albumin (HSA) exhibited signals 25% higher than those observed with BSA. Signals comparable to those obtained with BSA were observed with poly(L-Trp, L-Lys), poly(L-Trp, L-Arg) or poly(L-Trp, L-Orn) at pH 7.0. No signals were obtained when tryptophan was replaced by other amino acids or when free tryptophan or the tripeptide Lys-Trp-Lys was assayed ( pH 7.0). Tryptophan in HCl 5 N produced LIOAS signals similar to those produced by tryptophan-containing copolymers. Moreover, the absorption peak could be observed in a UV-VIS spectrophotometer. Therefore, the LIOAS signals obtained with BSA, HSA, and tryptophan-containing random copolymers may be attributed to a new transition of the indole moiety of their tryptophan residues when “protonated”. Tryptophan residues of proteins are known to participate in π-cation interactions, which are important in protein stability and function. As a matter of fact, HSA and BSA contain an internal tryptophan in close proximity to lysine and arginine residues and therefore suitable for π-cation interactions. The strength of this type of interaction strongly depends on distances and relative orientations of both amino acid residues. Accordingly, these interactions should be highly sensitive to conformational changes. Based on preliminary results that have shown that LIOAS signal at 532 nm depended on the aggregation state of BSA and/or on the oxidation state of its Cys-34, we postulate that the LIOAS signal observed with proteins and tryptophan-containing polypeptides are related to Trp-Lys or Trp-Arg interactions and that the intensity of the signal depends on the strength of such interactions.Fil: Roveri, Oscar Angel. Modeling the Influence of Antifreeze Proteins on Three-Dimensional Ice Crystal Melt Shapes using a Geometric Approach
The melting of pure axisymmetric ice crystals has been described previously
by us within the framework of so-called geometric crystal growth.
Nonequilibrium ice crystal shapes evolving in the presence of hyperactive
antifreeze proteins (hypAFPs) are experimentally observed to assume ellipsoidal
geometries ("lemon" or "rice" shapes). To analyze such shapes we harness the
underlying symmetry of hexagonal ice Ih and extend two-dimensional geometric
models to three-dimensions to reproduce the experimental dissolution process.
The geometrical model developed will be useful as a quantitative test of the

PHYCOERYTHROCYANINS FROM Westiellopsis prolifica AND Nostoc rivulare: CHARACTERIZATION OF THE PHYCOVIOLOBILIN CHROMOPHORE IN BOTH STATES
Phycoerythrocyanin or fractions enriched in it have been isolated from the filamentous cyanobacteria, Westiellopsis prolifica ARM 365 and Nostoc rivulare ARM 212. Both show the photoreversible photochromism (difference maxima at 503 and 570 nm) characteristic of this pigment, which is related to the phycoviolobilin chromophore on the α-subunit. Native phycoerythrocyanin and its β-subunit show little if any reversible photochemistry in the 600–620 nm region, where the phycocyanobilin chromophores absorb maximally. Instead the phycocyanobilin chromophores are bleached irreversibly. At the same time, the data show that reversible photochemistry is a useful analytical tool to detect phycoerythrocyanin in cyanobacterial extracts. Fluorescence measurements indicate that: (i) the 510 nm absorbing isomer of the violobilin chromophore has only little fluorescence; and (ii) the energy transfer from the violobilin chromophores to the cyanin chromophores is efficient only in the 570 nm form
Laser-induced optoacoustics combined with near-infrared emission. An alternative approach for the determination of intersystem crossing quantum yields applied to porphycenes
An approach was developed to determine triplet quantum yields, ΦT, which overcomes most of the difficulties usually encountered in flash photolysis studies of triplet states. The combined application of near-IR emission and optoacoustics yields ΦT values which are independent of the absorption properties of the triplets. Thus, the triplet energies derived from near-IR phosphorescence spectra together with the values of the heat stored by the triplets determined from optoacoustic experiments afforded ΦT = 0.3 ± 0.1 for porphycene (PO) and 0.4 ± 0.1 for its tetra-n-propyl derivative (TPrPO). Several calorimetric references for optoacoustic measurements in the red region were tested. The ΦT values, combined with flash photolysis data, yielded accurate triplet- minus ground-state absorption coefficients. The quantum yields for singlet molecular oxygen production determined by time-resolved phosphorescence were ΦΔ = 0.34 ± 0.05 for PO and 0.36 ± 0.03 for TPrPO which implies an efficiency near unity for O2(1Δ8) production upon collision of the triplet states of the porphycenes with ground-state O2. © 1990 American Chemical Society.Fil:Aramendía, P.F. TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF PHOTOCHEMISTRY IN PHYCOERYTHROCYANIN α-SUBUNIT
The photochemical activities of phycoerythrocyanin α-subunits from Mastigocladus laminosus separated by isoelectric focusing were tested by irradiating at 500, 550, 577 and 600 nm. Two types of photoreversible photochromic responses have been characterized by absorption and absorption difference spectroscopy. Type I is the well-known absorption shift from 571 to 506 nm. Type II is a new response characterized by a line-broadening of the 570 nm absorption

New insights into ice growth and melting modifications by antifreeze proteins
Antifreeze proteins (AFPs) evolved in many organisms, allowing them to survive in cold climates by controlling ice crystal growth. The specific interactions of AFPs with ice determine their potential applications in agriculture, food preservation and medicine. AFPs control the shapes of ice crystals in a manner characteristic of the particular AFP type. Moderately active AFPs cause the formation of elongated bipyramidal crystals, often with seemingly defined facets, while hyperactive AFPs produce more varied crystal shapes. These different morphologies are generally considered to be growth shapes. In a series of bright light and fluorescent microscopy observations of ice crystals in solutions containing different AFPs, we show that crystal shaping also occurs during melting. In particular, the characteristic ice shapes observed in solutions of most hyperactive AFPs are formed during melting. We relate these findings to the affinities of the hyperactive AFPs for the basal plane of ice. Our results demonstrate the relation between basal plane affinity and hyperactivity and show a clear difference in the ice-shaping mechanisms of most moderate and hyperactive AFPs. Glossary of terms used in photocatalysis and radiation catalysis (IUPAC recommendations 2011)
This glossary of terms covers phenomena considered under the very wide terms photocatalysis and radiation catalysis. A clear distinction is made between phenomena related to either photochemistry and photocatalysis or radiation chemistry and radiation catalysis. The term "radiation" is used here as embracing electromagnetic radiation of all wavelengths, but in general excluding fast-moving particles. Consistent definitions are given of terms in the areas mentioned above, as well as definitions of the most important parameters used for the quantitative description of the phenomena. Terms related to the up-scaling of photocatalytic processes for industrial applications have been included. This Glossary should be used together with the Glossary of terms used in photochemistry, 3rd edition, IUPAC Recommendations 2006: (doi:10.1351/pac200779030293) as well as with the IUPAC Compendium of Chemical Terminology, 2nd ed. Strengthening the Synapse between Outpatient Neurological Care and Inpatient Referral
Objective
The goal of this project is to investigate if established neurology patients are appropriately referred to the emergency room. We suspect that there are patients that could be more effectively triaged to prevent unnecessary visits to the emergency department. If this is the case, implementing an intervention such as offering expedited visits or contingency plan, may reduce non-emergent inpatient consultative services5. This would also improve outpatient communication and decrease utilization of both ER and patient resources
