Phase-referenced interferometer with subwavelength and subhertz sensitivity applied to the study of cell membrane dynamics
We report a highly sensitive means of measuring cellular dynamics with a novel interferometer that can measure motional phase changes. The system is based on a modified Michelson interferometer with a composite laser beam of 1550-nm low-coherence light and 775-nm CW light. The sample is prepared on a coverslip that is highly reflective at 775nm. By referencing the heterodyne phase of the 1550-nm light reflected from the sample to that of the 775-nm light reflected from the coverslip, small motions in the sample are detected, and motional artifacts from vibrations in the interferometer are completely eliminated. We demonstrate that the system is sensitive to motions as small as 3.6nm and velocities as small as 1nm/s. Using the instrument, we study transient volume changes of a few (approximately three) cells in a monolayer immersed in weakly hypotonic and hypertonic solutions
The Road Towards the ILC: Higgs, Top/QCD, Loops
The International Linear e+e- Collider (ILC) could go into operation in the
second half of the upcoming decade. Experimental analyses and theory
calculations for the physics at the ILC are currently performed. We review
recent progress, as presented at the LCWS06 in Bangalore, India, in the fields
of Higgs boson physics and top/QCD. Also the area of loop calculations,
necessary to achieve the required theory precision, is included.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure. Plenary talk given at the LCWS06 March 2006,

Two-loop SUSY QCD corrections to the chargino masses in the MSSM
We have calculated the two-loop strong interaction corrections to the
chargino pole masses in the DRbar'-scheme in the Minimal Supersymmetric
Standard Model (MSSM) with complex parameters. We have performed a detailed
numerical analysis for a particular point in the parameter space and found
corrections of a few tenths of a percent. We provide a computer program which
calculates chargino and neutralino masses with complex parameters including the
one-loop corrections and all two-loop SQCD effects.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, references modified, clarifications adde
EDGE: a code to calculate diffusion of cosmic-ray electrons and their gamma-ray emission
The positron excess measured by PAMELA and AMS can only be explained if there
is one or several sources injecting them. Moreover, at the highest energies, it
requires the presence of nearby (hundreds of parsecs) and middle age
(maximum of hundreds of kyr) source. Pulsars, as factories of electrons
and positrons, are one of the proposed candidates to explain the origin of this
excess. To calculate the contribution of these sources to the electron and
positron flux at the Earth, we developed EDGE (Electron Diffusion and Gamma
rays to the Earth), a code to treat diffusion of electrons and compute their
diffusion from a central source with a flexible injection spectrum. We can
derive the source's gamma-ray spectrum, spatial extension, the all-electron
density in space and the electron and positron flux reaching the Earth. We
present in this contribution the fundamentals of the code and study how
different parameters affect the gamma-ray spectrum of a source and the electron
flux measured at the Earth.Comment: Presented at the 35th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC2017),

Experimental and theoretical analysis of the upper critical field in FSF trilayers
The upper critical magnetic field H_{c2} in thin-film FSF trilayer spin-valve
cores is studied experimentally and theoretically in geometries perpendicular
and parallel to the heterostructure surface. The series of samples with
variable thicknesses of the bottom and of the top Cu_{41}Ni_{59} F-layers are
prepared in a single run, utilizing a wedge deposition technique. The critical
field H_{c2} is measured in the temperature range K and for magnetic
fields up to 9 Tesla. A transition from oscillatory to reentrant behavior of
the superconducting transition temperature versus F-layers thickness, induced
by an external magnetic field, has been observed for the first time. In order
to properly interpret the experimental data, we develop a quasiclassical
theory, enabling one to evaluate the temperature dependence of the critical
field and the superconducting transition temperature for an arbitrary set of
the system parameters. A fairly good agreement between our experimental data
and theoretical predictions is demonstrated for all samples, using a single set
of fit parameters. This confirms adequacy of the
Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) physics in determining the unusual
superconducting properties of the studied Cu_{41}Ni_{59}/Nb/Cu_{41}Ni_{59}
spin-valve core trilayers.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures; published versio
Multi-excitonic complexes in single InGaN quantum dots
Cathodoluminescence spectra employing a shadow mask technique of InGaN layers
grown by metal organic chemical vapor deposition on Si(111) substrates are
reported. Sharp lines originating from InGaN quantum dots are observed.
Temperature dependent measurements reveal thermally induced carrier
redistribution between the quantum dots. Spectral diffusion is observed and was
used as a tool to correlate up to three lines that originate from the same
quantum dot. Variation of excitation density leads to identification of exciton
and biexciton. Binding and anti-binding complexes are discovered.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figure
