COMPARISON OF NEW ZEALAND AND THE UNITED STATES MEAT INDUSTRY EXPORTING AND MARKETING PRACTICES

    Get PDF
The paper is a comparative analysis of selected beef and sheep meat exporting practices. These two particular types of meat were selected as these are the two major export products from New Zealand. The United States also is a major beef exporter, but exports little sheep meat. There is a major difference between the two countries in their overall approach to the export market. New Zealand utilizes a coordinated industry strategy while the United States does not have a coordinated strategy as individual companies aggressively pursue their own individual interests without much consideration of the overall implications for the total industry. The paper initially considers beef and sheep meat production, exports and imports, and the critical issues pertaining to exports. Then there is consideration of the two countries' approaches to export markets and future opportunities, and the differences in industry strategies.International Relations/Trade, Marketing,

Max Alexander Soffar, who had been arrested for motorcycle theft in Harris County, Texas, hinted to the arresting officer that he had been involved in the killing of bowling alley employees in Houston, Texas. At the police station, officers summoned Officer Clawson to assist in the interrogation. Soffar had previously worked as an informant for Clawson and viewed him as a friend. Clawson gave Soffar a new set of Miranda warnings and Soffar waived his rights. A little later, Detective Schultz questioned Soffar and Soffar recounted details relating to the killings that Schultz believed “only the perpetrator would know.

Spin chains and channels with memory

In most studies of the channel capacity of quantum channels, it is assumed that the errors in each use of the channel are independent. However, recent work has begun to investigate the effects of memory or correlations in the error. This work has led to speculation that interesting non-analytic behaviour may occur in the capacity. Motivated by these observations, we connect the study of channel capacities under correlated error to the study of critical behaviour in many-body physics. This connection enables us the techniques of many-body physics to either completely solve or understand qualitatively a number of interesting models of correlated error. The models can display analogous behaviour to associated many-body systems, including `phase transitions'.Comment: V2: changes in presentation, some additional comments on generalisation. V3: In accordance with published version, most (but not all) details of proofs now included. A separate paper will shortly be submitted separately with all details and more result

Reweighted nuclear norm regularization: A SPARSEVA approach

The aim of this paper is to develop a method to estimate high order FIR and ARX models using least squares with re-weighted nuclear norm regularization. Typically, the choice of the tuning parameter in the reweighting scheme is computationally expensive, hence we propose the use of the SPARSEVA (SPARSe Estimation based on a VAlidation criterion) framework to overcome this problem. Furthermore, we suggest the use of the prediction error criterion (PEC) to select the tuning parameter in the SPARSEVA algorithm. Numerical examples demonstrate the veracity of this method which has close ties with the traditional technique of cross validation, but using much less computations.Comment: This paper is accepted and will be published in The Proceedings of the 17th IFAC Symposium on System Identification (SYSID 2015), Beijing, China, 201
