Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus and Lateral Rectus Palsy in an Elderly Patient
Acquired palsy of the lateral rectus presents with horizontal diplopia and has a broad differential. Herpes zoster ophthalmicus- (HZO) related cranial nerve palsy is a transient and self-limiting condition. Systemic antiviral treatment is administered in order to prevent sight-threatening complications. In suspected cases, zosteriform rash should be questioned. One should keep in mind that acquired esotropia in the elderly may sometimes present following HZO

Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density
Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data
Synthesis and Characterization of Some Metal Complexes of Isonitroso-2-acetylnaphthalene Derivative
WOS: 000386572500023Nickel(II), copper(II), and zinc(II) complexes with the Schiff base obtained from isonitroso-2-acetylnaphthalene and 1,2-phenylenediamine were synthesized. The compounds were characterized by elemental analyses, FT-IR, UV-Vis, and H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra, conductance measurements, magnetic susceptibility measurements, and thermal analysis. The results suggest tetradentate coordination of the symmetrical Schiff base ligand through the two oxime oxygen atoms and two azomethine nitrogen atoms. The molar conductance data showed that the synthesized complexes are non-electrolytes.Research Foundation of the Nigde University (BAP) [P.N. Synthesis and characterization of some vic-dioxime and its mononuclear complexes
WOS: 000247004300007In this study, acetophenone is used as a basis substance. omega-Isonitrosoacetophenone has been synthesized from nitrosyl with amyl nitrite of acetophenone in the presence of sodium ethoxide. Subsequently, anti-phenylglyoxime has been prepared by reacting omega-isonitrosoacetophenone with hydroxylamine and sodium acetate in a ethanolic media. Chlorophenylglyoxime has been obtained from reaction with chlorine gases. Then, three aminophenylglyoxime (ligands) have been prepared by the reaction of chlorophenylglyoxime and the corresponding amines. The Ni(II), Co(II), and Cu(II) complexes with BF2+-bridge of anilinophenylglyoxime and 2,4-dimethylanilinophenylglyoxime were prepared. Then polymeric metal complexes with BF2+-bridge of dopamiophenylglyoxime were prepared. Their structures were identified by FT-IR, H-1 NMR, and ICP-AES spectral data, elemental analysis and magnetic measurements
Jitter performance of neural network equivalent MPSK schemes over microwave channels
In this paper a new microwave channel model with realizable and practical parameters is defined for indoor mobile communication. The emphasis is on the jitter and error performance of trellis-coded MPSK and neural network equivalent systems over microwave channels with no channel state information (CSI) and no side information on the phase noise process. Analytical upper bounds are derived using the Chernoff bounding technique combined with a modified generating functional approach. It is shown that the neurocomputing results confirm the analytical results. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd

The comparison of different dyspnoea scales in patients with COPD
Objectives (i) to compare the relationship between different dyspnoea scales and physical and clinical parameters of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); and (ii) to determine the most suitable scale among these scales for this patient group. Methods Forty patients with COPD [mean 1st second forced expiratory volume (FEV1), 49.16 +/- 2.33% predicted], aged 53-85 participated in this study. The severity of dyspnoea was assessed with different five scales [Modified Borg Scale (MBS), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Medical Research Council Dyspnoea Scale (MRCS), Baseline Dyspnoea Index (BDI) and Oxygen Cost Diagram (OCD)]. As clinical parameters, respiratory function was measured by means of pulmonary function test and arterial blood gas analysis. As physical parameters, age and body mass index was recorded. Results Patient's dyspnoea severities were 1.59 +/- 2.75, 2.03 +/- 2.82, 2.14 +/- 1.44, 6.81 +/- 4.07, 4.56 +/- 2.47 for MBS, VAS, MRCS, BDI, OCD, respectively (P = 0.08). It was proven that only %FEV1 had a correlation with MRCS (r = -0.67, P = 0.01) and BDI (r = 0.58, P = 0.02). In addition to these determinations MRCS, MBS and VAS had a strong correlation defining their relationships with each other (P < 0.05). Conclusions MRCS and BDI could assess dyspnoea during daily activities, so these scales showed strength correlation with physical and clinical values. Briefly MRCS is the most suitable dyspnoea scale for the patients with COPD, moreover, BDI, as the second suitable scale, is correlated only with MRCS. Based on these findings, we recommended that MRCS and BDI are appropriate scales for evaluation of dyspnoea in the patients with COPD
The Mooring Pattern Study for Q-Flex Type LNG Carriers Scheduled for Berthing at Ege Gaz Aliaga LNG Terminal
Ever growing energy industry requires larger quantities of LNG to be transported by bigger ships between terminals. Every day, new kind of large vessels created by new technologies, and these are used to trade around the globe. This is the dynamic change in shipping industry. But on the other hand these new vessels need to safely berth to existing terminals which we may accept as more static part of the trade. Thus this study born by the request of Ege Gaz Aliaga LNG Terminal management to determine if it is safe to berth to the terminal by a new breed of large LNG carrier type named as Q-Flex and Q-Max. Transas Bridge Simulator NTPRO 5000 series was used in this study for extensive experiments which had been simulated by the use of hook function. During the study, every force applied to mooring hooks and dolphins by the ship lines were divided into 3 dimensions and then measured by simulation experiments. With analysis of the data, required hook and dolphins strengths were determined for the safe mooring arrangements. Upon the completion of the study Ege Gaz Aliaga LNG Terminal became the first safe berth for Q-Flex type vessels in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. And finally all experiments were confirmed with real life experience when the first Q-Flex type LNG carrier berthed to the Ege Gaz Aliaga LNG Terminal
Performance of a combined trellis coded quantization/modulation over wireless local-loop environment
In this paper, a combined trellis coded quantization/modulation (TCQ/TCM) scheme is introduced for the wireless local-loop environment modelled with realizable and practical medium parameters. The performance analysis of the combined system is carried out through the evaluation of signal-to-quantization noise ratio (SQNR) versus signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) curves and bit error probability upper bounds. Simulation studies confirm the analytical results. Copyright (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
