    Binary Decay of Light Nuclear Systems

    A review of the characteristic features found in fully energy-damped, binarydecay yields from light heavy-ion reactions with 20≤Atarget+Aprojectile≤8020\leq A_{target} + A_{projectile}\leq 80 is presented. The different aspects of these yields that have been used to support models of compound-nucleus (CN) fission and deep-inelastic dinucleus orbiting are highlighted. Cross section calculations based on the statistical phase space at different stages of the reaction are presented and compared to the experimental results. Although the statistical models are found to reproduce most of the observed experimental behaviors, an additional reaction component corresponding to a heavy-ion resonance or orbiting mechanism is also evident in certain systems. The system dependence of this second component is discussed. The extent to which the binary yields in very light systems (ACN≤32)(A_{CN} \leq 32) can be viewed as resulting from a fusion-fission mechanism is explored.     Lipid-modulated assembly of magnetized iron-filled carbon nanotubes in millimeter-scale structures

    Biomolecule-functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) combine the molecular recognition properties of biomaterials with the electrical properties of nanoscale solid state transducers. Application of this hybrid material in bioelectronic devices requires the development of methods for the reproducible self-assembly of CNTs into higher-order structures in an aqueous environment. To this end, we have studied pattern formation of lipid-coated Fe-filled CNTs, with lengths in the 1–5 µm range, by controlled evaporation of aqueous CNT-lipid suspensions. Novel diffusion limited aggregation structures composed of end-to-end oriented nanotubes were observed by optical and atomic force microscopy. Significantly, the lateral dimension of assemblies of magnetized Fe-filled CNTs was in the millimeter range. Control experiments in the absence of lipids and without magnetization indicated that the formation of these long linear nanotube patterns is driven by a subtle interplay between radial flow forces in the evaporating droplet, lipid-modulated van der Waals forces, and magnetic dipole–dipole interactions.     Violation of the Ikeda sum rule and the self-consistency in the renormalized quasiparticle random phase approximation and the nuclear double-beta decay

    The effect of the inclusion of ground state correlations into the QRPA equation of motion for the two-neutrino double beta (ββ2ν\beta\beta_{2\nu}) decay is carefully analyzed. The resulting model, called renormalized QRPA (RQRPA), does not collapse near the physical value of the nuclear force strength in the particle-particle channel, as happens with the ordinary QRPA. Still, the ββ2ν\beta\beta_{2\nu} transition amplitude is only slightly less sensitive on this parameter in the RQRPA than that in the plain QRPA. It is argued that this fact reveals once more that the characteristic behaviour of the ββ2ν\beta\beta_{2\nu} transition amplitude within the QRPA is not an artifact of the model, but a consequence of the partial restoration of the spin-isospin SU(4)SU(4) symmetry. It is shown that the price paid for bypassing the collapse in the RQRPA is the violation of the Ikeda sum rule.Comment: 16 pages, latex, 3 postscript figure

    Selection strategies of segregant soybean populations for resistance to Asian rust.

    The objective of this work was to identify the best selection strategies for the more promising parental combinations to obtain lines with good resistance to soybean Asian rust (Phakopsora pachyrhizi). Two experiments were carried out in the field during the 2006/2007 and 2007/2008 growing seasons, to determine the percentage of infected leaf area of individual plants offive parents and their segregant F2 and F3 populations. The data obtained indicates that additive genetic variance predominates in the control of soybean resistance to Asian rust, and that the year and time of assessment do not significantly inftuence the estimates of the genetic parameters obtained. The narrow-sense heritability (h~ ranged from 23.12 to 55.83%, and indicates the possibility of successful selection of resistant individuais in the early generations of the breeding programo Ali the procedures used to select the most promising populations to generate superior inbred lines for resistance to P pachyrhizi presented similar results and identified the BRO1-18437 x BRS 232 population as the best for inbred line selection

    Phases of quantum states in completely positive non-unitary evolution

    We define an operational notion of phases in interferometry for a quantum system undergoing a completely positive non-unitary evolution. This definition is based on the concepts of quantum measurement theory. The suitable generalization of the Pancharatnan connection allows us to determine the dynamical and geometrical parts of the total phase between two states linked by a completely positive map. These results reduce to the knonw expressions of total, dynamical and geometrical phases for pure and mixed states evolving unitarily.Comment: 2 figure
