Trusted Hands: The Role of Community-Based Organizations in Enrolling Children in Public Health Insurance Programs

    Get PDF
Trusted Hand is a new approach to enrolling traditionally hard-to-reach children in public health insurance programs. While the most common locations for enrollment assistance are state and local social service agencies and health clinics, many states are increasing their network to include a variety of community-based organizations that typically have not been involved in public health insurance. This Issue Brief, prepared by researchers at the University of Colorado Denver, details the advantages, as well as the challenges of this promising new strategy

Does environmental flow speed affect the local relative abundance of Vorticella convallaria?

Vorticella convallaria are microscopic sessile suspension feeders which live attached to substrates and are ubiquitous in aquatic environments. They depend on a self-generated current to feed and help maintain the health of aquatic ecosystems by consuming bacteria and detritus. As highly prevalent filter feeders, they serve as biological indicators of ecosystem health and are heavily involved in nutrient and carbon cycling. Furthermore, they are essential to wastewater treatment and benefit bioremediation efforts. However, the conditions in which they collectively thrive and feed most effectively are not well known. We exposed organisms to a circulating flume containing four distinct unidirectional flow regimes of different speeds. Initial results suggest that organisms are significantly more abundant in the slow speeds, in which they are less pushed over and may feed more effectively. Vorticella remained more abundant in the slowest flow speed over time, and became more abundant when the order of flow regimes was reversed (transforming a fast flow regime into one with a slower speed), indicative of selective preference

Optimal Photovoltaic Placement by Self-organizing Hierarchical Binary Particle Swarm Optimization in Distribution Systems

AbstractThe novel method of BPSO is proposed for solving optimal number and size of photovoltaic (PV) units on a radius distribution system. For the optimal number of PV unit problem, the SHBPSO is used to obtain quick convergence and explore solution space in the new direction. For the problem of the optimal sizes of PV units, the proposed method is used to avoid a local optimum trap. Multiple grid-connected PV units are considered. The SHBPSO can find better locations and sizes than other methods such as the classical BPSO, the BPSO with inertia weight, the BPSO with acceleration coefficients and the BPSO with sigmoid increasing inertia weight on the radial distribution system. The results including the active power of PV supplies injected into the system and total yearly power loss reduction are analyzed

AbstractSmart grid technology is the key for an efficient use of distributed energy resources. Noting the climate change becomes an important issue the whole world is currently facing, the ever increasing price of petroleum products and the reduction in cost of renewable energy power systems, opportunities for renewable energy systems to address electricity generation seems to be increasing. However, to achieve commercialization and widespread use, an efficient energy management strategy of system needs to be addressed. Recently, the concept of smart grid has been successfully applied to the electric power systems. This paper presents the study of integrating renewable energy in smart grid system. The introductory sections provide the role of renewable energy and distributed generation in smart grid system. Subsequent sections cover the concept of smart grid as well as benefits and barrier of smart grid renewable energy system. Pricing is a significant variable in success of renewable energy promotion. Thus, it is important to gain insight to renewable energy pricing by considering unique characteristics associated with renewable energy alternatives. A review of work done in renewable smart grid systems in recent years indicates the promising potential of such research characteristics in the future. This would be useful to developers and practitioners of renewable energy systems and to policy makers

Purpose: Clients with an acquired brain injury (ABI) are at risk of mental health problems and it has been argued that transitions throughout the rehabilitation process are a challenge for rehabilitation practice; however, the link between transitions and psychosocial outcome has been under-researched. Therefore, this study aims to (1) investigate the status of clients with moderate or severe ABI two-year post-discharge on the following outcomes variables: Physical and cognitive function, depression, quality of life, civil and work status, (2) examine correlations between these outcomes and (3) explore through qualitative interviews the subjective experiences of individuals with ABI in order to increase our understanding of clients’ perspectives on this outcome and its relation to life transitions in a two-year period.Method: 37 individuals aged 18–66 with moderate or severe ABI were interviewed two years after discharge. At this time, they also completed standard measures of depression (MDI), quality of life (WHOQOL-bref) and functional independence (FIM™). Historical data of their FIM™ status at discharge were obtained for comparison. Results: We found psychological problems two years post-hospitalization, especially depression (35.1%) and decreased psychological QOL (61%). Analysis of interviews found six main factors perceived as important for psychosocial outcome: family relations, return to work, waiting lists, psychological support, fatigue and personal competences. Conclusions: Clients’ status two years post-hospitalization is often characterized by psychological problems. Based on clients’ accounts, we found a connection between psychosocial outcome and life transition experiences and developed a model of factors that are perceived as helping and hindering positive outcome.</jats:p
