Structural transitions of monoolein bicontinuous cubic phase induced by inclusion of protein lysozyme solutions
Inclusion of protein lysozyme molecules in lipidic monoolein cubic phase
induces a transition from a structure to one.
Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) method with high intensity synchrotron
radiation enabled us to follow closely the transition depending on the
conditions of lysozyme solutions. We showed that concentrated lysozyme
solutions induced the appearance of the structure coexisting
with the structure. From the relation between the lattice
parameters of these two structures it was shown that they were related by the
Bonnet transformation of underlying triply periodic minimal surfaces. We found
that the transition also occurred at lower lysozyme concentration when NaCl
induced attraction between lysozyme molecules. The origin of the transition was
considered as a frustration in the cubic phase where lysozyme molecules were
highly confined. A simple estimation of the frustration was given, which took
into account of the translational entropy of lysozyme molecules. At the highest
concentration of lysozyme and NaCl the structure was found to
disappear and left only the structure. This was probably
either due to the crystallization or phase separation of lysozyme solutions
ongoing microscopically, which absorbed lysozyme molecules from channels of the
cubic phase and thus removed the frustration.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
Slow Relaxation Process in Ising like Heisenberg Kagome Antiferromagnets due to Macroscopic Degeneracy in the Ordered State
We study relaxation phenomena in the ferromagnetically ordered state of the
Ising-like Heisenberg kagome antiferromagnets. We introduce the "weathervane
loop" in order to characterize macroscopic degenerate ordered states and study
the microscopic mechanism of the slow relaxation from a view point of the
dynamics of the weathervane loop configuration. This mechanism may give a
possible origin of the slow relaxation reported in recent experiments.Comment: 6pages, 4figures, HFM2006 proceeding
Single and Double Universal Seesaw Mechanisms with Universal Strength for Yukawa Couplings
Single and double universal seesaw mechanisms and the hypothesis of universal
strength for Yukawa couplings are applied to formulate a unified theory of
fermion mass spectrum in a model based on an extended Pati-Salam symmetry. Five
kinds of Higgs fields are postulated to mediate scalar interactions among
electroweak doublets of light fermions and electroweak singlets of heavy exotic
fermions with relative Yukawa coupling constants of exponential form. At the
first-order seesaw approximation, quasi-democratic mass matrices with equal
diagonal elements are derived for all charged fermion sectors and a diagonal
mass matrix is obtained for the neutrino sector under an additional ansatz.
Assuming the vacuum neutrino oscillation, the problems of solar and atmospheric

The Long Term Temperature Variation in the Lunar Subsurface
Introduction: Lunar surface heat flow values were measured directly during the Apollo missions. These experiments were carried out on Apollo 15 and 17 for about six years between July 7, 1971 and September 30, 1977. The heat flow values derived from these two measurement sites were 21 mW/m2 and 14 mW/m2 respectively [1]. Langseth et al. concluded the repre-sentative global lunar heat flow to be around 18 mW/m2 based on approximately the first 3 years of data until the end of the 1974 (see Figure 1).
Recently, Saito et al. (2006) succeeded in archiving the heat flow data from March 1 1976 until September 30th 1977 [2]. These data are very useful for identify-ing this very long-term variation because we could extend the period of data almost by a factor of two (from 3 years to 6 years) compared to the data ar-chived previously. Because an anomaly had occurred on April 28th, 1976 on the Apollo 15 experiment, the data of Apollo 15 could not be expanded. Therefore, the data obtained by Apollo 17 were used for long term analysis
