The automorphism group of the free group of rank two is a CAT(0) group
We prove that the automorphism group of the braid group on four strands acts
faithfully and geometrically on a CAT(0) 2-complex. This implies that the
automorphism group of the free group of rank two acts faithfully and
geometrically on a CAT(0) 2-complex, in contrast to the situation for rank
three and above.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures. The manuscript has been modified in minor ways in

Economics in Ireland
The measurement of academic output in Ireland is of growing interest in the context of the government's strategy to identify and support centres of research excellence and to encourage inter-institutional collaboration in both research and fourth- level education. This paper looks at research output within the economics profession in these various centres, building on an earlier literature (Barrett and Lucey, 2003: Coupe and Walsh, 2003) which looked at the research output of Irish economists in peer-reviewed journals. Using a relatively new data-base, Scopus, we find that research output in the Republic of Ireland is heavily skewed by researcher and by institution and that the more productive and most cited Irish research economists are heavily concentrated in the Greater Dublin area
Antimicrobial Susceptibilities of Aerobic Isolates from Respiratory Samples of Young New Zealand Horses
Antimicrobial Susceptibilities of Aerobic Isolates from Respiratory Samples of Young New Zealand Horses
3rd Annual IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition, ECCE 2011, Phoenix, AZ, 17-22 September 2011This paper presents a method of mitigating the transient overshoots of DC-DC converters operating with large load disturbances. The method involves a small auxiliary power circuit with a complementary control scheme that provides a smooth absorption and release of excess energy from and to the main DC-DC converter in the events of large load changes. This control mechanism interactively mitigates the large transient overshoots which would otherwise appear at the converter output. Since the control scheme involves an adjustable-energy-storage feature, the proposed solution is effective for any level of step-load change within a pre-specified range.Department of Electronic and Information EngineeringRefereed conference pape
A Mach-Zehnder interferometer based on orbital angular momentum for improved vortex coronagraph efficiency
The Annular Groove Phase Mask (AGPM) is a vectorial vortex phase mask. It acts as a half-wave plate with a radial fast axis orientation operating in the mid infrared domain. When placed at the focus of a telescope element provides a continuous helical phase ramp for an on axis sources, which creates the orbital angular momentum. Thanks to that phase, the intensity of the central source is canceled by a down-stream pupil stop, while the off axis sources are not affected. However due to experimental conditions the nulling is hardly perfect. To improve the null, a Mach-Zehnder interferometer containing Dove prisms differently oriented can be proposed to sort out light based on its orbital angular momentum (OAM). Thanks to the differential rotation of the beam, a π phase shift is achieved for the on axis light affected by a non zero OAM. Therefore the contrast between the star and its faint companion is enhanced. Nevertheless, due the Dove prisms birefringence, the performance of the interferometer is relatively poor. To solve this problem, we propose to add a birefringent wave-plate in each arm to compensate this birefringence. In this paper, we will develop the mathematical model of the wave front using the Jones formalism. The performance of the interferometer is at first computed for the simple version without the birefringent plate. Then the effect of the birefringent plate is be mathematically described and the performance is re-computed
EPIC 219217635: A Doubly Eclipsing Quadruple System Containing an Evolved Binary
We have discovered a doubly eclipsing, bound, quadruple star system in the
field of K2 Campaign 7. EPIC 219217635 is a stellar image with that
contains an eclipsing binary (`EB') with d and a second EB with
d. We have obtained followup radial-velocity (`RV')
spectroscopy observations, adaptive optics imaging, as well as ground-based
photometric observations. From our analysis of all the observations, we derive
good estimates for a number of the system parameters. We conclude that (1) both
binaries are bound in a quadruple star system; (2) a linear trend to the RV
curve of binary A is found over a 2-year interval, corresponding to an
acceleration, cm s; (3) small
irregular variations are seen in the eclipse-timing variations (`ETVs')
detected over the same interval; (4) the orbital separation of the quadruple
system is probably in the range of 8-25 AU; and (5) the orbital planes of the
two binaries must be inclined with respect to each other by at least
25. In addition, we find that binary B is evolved, and the cooler and
currently less massive star has transferred much of its envelope to the
currently more massive star. We have also demonstrated that the system is
sufficiently bright that the eclipses can be followed using small ground-based
telescopes, and that this system may be profitably studied over the next decade
when the outer orbit of the quadruple is expected to manifest itself in the ETV
and/or RV curves.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA
Reclaiming the political : emancipation and critique in security studies
The critical security studies literature has been marked by a shared commitment towards the politicization of security – that is, the analysis of its assumptions, implications and the practices through which it is (re)produced. In recent years, however, politicization has been accompanied by a tendency to conceive security as connected with a logic of exclusion, totalization and even violence. This has resulted in an imbalanced politicization that weakens critique. Seeking to tackle this situation, the present article engages with contributions that have advanced emancipatory versions of security. Starting with, but going beyond, the so-called Aberystwyth School of security studies, the argument reconsiders the meaning of security as emancipation by making the case for a systematic engagement with the notions of reality and power. This revised version of security as emancipation strengthens critique by addressing political dimensions that have been underplayed in the critical security literature
An index to quantify an individual's scientific research output that takes into account the effect of multiple coauthorship
I propose the index ("hbar"), defined as the number of papers of an
individual that have citation count larger than or equal to the of all
coauthors of each paper, as a useful index to characterize the scientific
output of a researcher that takes into account the effect of multiple
coauthorship. The bar is higher for .Comment: A few minor changes from v1. To be published in Scientometric
