Dental Status and Compression of Life Expectancy with Disability
This study examined whether the number of teeth contributes to the compression of morbidity, measured as a shortening of life expectancy with disability, an extension of healthy life expectancy, and overall life expectancy. A prospective cohort study was conducted. A self-reported baseline survey was given to 126,438 community-dwelling older people aged ≥65 y in Japan in 2010, and 85,161 (67.4%) responded. The onset of functional disability and all-cause mortality were followed up for 1,374 d (follow-up rate = 96.1%). A sex-stratified illness-death model was applied to estimate the adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for 3 health transitions (healthy to dead, healthy to disabled, and disabled to dead). Absolute differences in life expectancy, healthy life expectancy, and life expectancy with disability according to the number of teeth were also estimated. Age, denture use, socioeconomic status, health status, and health behavior were adjusted. Compared with the edentulous participants, participants with ≥20 teeth had lower risks of transitioning from healthy to dead (adjusted HR, 0.58 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.50-0.68] for men and 0.70 [95% CI, 0.57-0.85] for women) and from healthy to disabled (adjusted HR, 0.52 [95% CI, 0.44-0.61] for men and 0.58 [95% CI, 0.49-0.68] for women). They also transitioned from disabled to dead earlier (adjusted HR, 1.26 [95% CI, 0.99-1.60] for men and 2.42 [95% CI, 1.72-3.38] for women). Among the participants aged ≥85 y, those with ≥20 teeth had a longer life expectancy (men: +57 d; women: +15 d) and healthy life expectancy (men: +92 d; women: +70 d) and a shorter life expectancy with disability (men: -35 d; women: -55 d) compared with the edentulous participants. Similar associations were observed among the younger participants and those with 1 to 9 or 10 to 19 teeth. The presence of remaining teeth was associated with a significant compression of morbidity: older Japanese adults' life expectancy with disability was compressed by 35 to 55 d within the follow-up of 1,374 d
Free energy of the Fr\"ohlich polaron in two and three dimensions
We present a novel Path Integral Monte Carlo scheme to solve the Fr\"ohlich
polaron model. At intermediate and strong electron-phonon coupling, the polaron
self-trapping is properly taken into account at the level of an effective
action obtained by a preaveraging procedure with a retarded trial action. We
compute the free energy at several couplings and temperatures in three and two
dimensions. Our results show that the accuracy of the Feynman variational upper
bound for the free energy is always better than 5% although the thermodynamics
derived from it is not correct. Our estimates of the ground state energies
demonstrate that the second cumulant correction to the variational upper bound
predicts the self energy to better than 1% at intermediate and strong coupling.Comment: RevTeX 7 pages 3 figures, revised versio
Spin Transport in Two Dimensional Hopping Systems
A two dimensional hopping system with Rashba spin-orbit interaction is
considered. Our main interest is concerned with the evolution of the spin
degree of freedom of the electrons. We derive the rate equations governing the
evolution of the charge density and spin polarization of this system in the
Markovian limit in one-particle approximation. If only two-site hopping events
are taken into account, the evolution of the charge density and of the spin
polarization is found to be decoupled. A critical electric field is found,
above which oscillations are superimposed on the temporal decay of the total
polarization. A coupling between charge density and spin polarization occurs on
the level of three-site hopping events. The coupling terms are identified as
the anomalous Hall effect and the recently proposed spin Hall effect. Thus, an
unpolarized charge current through a sheet of finite width leads to a
transversal spin accumulation in our model system.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figure
Photochemistry of Furyl- and Thienyldiazomethanes: Spectroscopic Characterization of Triplet 3-Thienylcarbene
Photolysis (λ \u3e 543 nm) of 3-thienyldiazomethane (1), matrix isolated in Ar or N2 at 10 K, yields triplet 3-thienylcarbene (13) and α-thial-methylenecyclopropene (9). Carbene 13 was characterized by IR, UV/vis, and EPR spectroscopy. The conformational isomers of 3-thienylcarbene (s-E and s-Z) exhibit an unusually large difference in zero-field splitting parameters in the triplet EPR spectrum (|D/hc| = 0.508 cm–1, |E/hc| = 0.0554 cm–1; |D/hc| = 0.579 cm–1, |E/hc| = 0.0315 cm–1). Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) calculations reveal substantially differing spin densities in the 3-thienyl ring at the positions adjacent to the carbene center, which is one factor contributing to the large difference in D values. NBO calculations also reveal a stabilizing interaction between the sp orbital of the carbene carbon in the s-Z rotamer of 13 and the antibonding σ orbital between sulfur and the neighboring carbon—an interaction that is not observed in the s-E rotamer of 13. In contrast to the EPR spectra, the electronic absorption spectra of the rotamers of triplet 3-thienylcarbene (13) are indistinguishable under our experimental conditions. The carbene exhibits a weak electronic absorption in the visible spectrum (λmax = 467 nm) that is characteristic of triplet arylcarbenes. Although studies of 2-thienyldiazomethane (2), 3-furyldiazomethane (3), or 2-furyldiazomethane (4) provided further insight into the photochemical interconversions among C5H4S or C5H4O isomers, these studies did not lead to the spectroscopic detection of the corresponding triplet carbenes (2-thienylcarbene (11), 3-furylcarbene (23), or 2-furylcarbene (22), respectively)
Evidence for Bound Entangled States with Negative Partial Transpose
We exhibit a two-parameter family of bipartite mixed states , in a
Hilbert space, which are negative under partial transposition
(NPT), but for which we conjecture that no maximally entangled pure states in
can be distilled by local quantum operations and classical
communication (LQ+CC). Evidence for this undistillability is provided by the
result that, for certain states in this family, we cannot extract entanglement
from any arbitrarily large number of copies of using a projection
on . These states are canonical NPT states in the sense that any
bipartite mixed state in any dimension with NPT can be reduced by LQ+CC
operations to an NPT state of the form. We show that the main
question about the distillability of mixed states can be formulated as an open

Polaron effects in electron channels on a helium film
Using the Feynman path-integral formalism we study the polaron effects in
quantum wires above a liquid helium film. The electron interacts with
two-dimensional (2D) surface phonons, i.e. ripplons, and is confined in one
dimension (1D) by an harmonic potential. The obtained results are valid for
arbitrary temperature (), electron-phonon coupling strength (), and
lateral confinement (). Analytical and numerical results are
obtained for limiting cases of , , and . We found the
surprising result that reducing the electron motion from 2D to quasi-1D makes

Optical Absorption Spectra of Bipolarons
The absorption of large bipolarons is investigated using the path-integral
method. The response of a bipolaron to an external electromagnetic field is
derived in the framework of the memory-function approach. The bipolaron optical
absorption spectrum consists of a series of relatively narrow peaks. The
peculiarities of the bipolaron optical absorption as a function of the
frequency of the electromagnetic field may be attributed to the transitions
