Why we need to see the dark matter to understand the dark energy
The cosmological concordance model contains two separate constituents which
interact only gravitationally with themselves and everything else, the dark
matter and the dark energy. In the standard dark energy models, the dark matter
makes up some 20% of the total energy budget today, while the dark energy is
responsible for about 75%. Here we show that these numbers are only robust for
specific dark energy models and that in general we cannot measure the abundance

On Axially Symmetric Solutions in the Electroweak Theory
We present the general ansatz, the energy density and the Chern-Simons charge
for static axially symmetric configurations in the bosonic sector of the
electroweak theory. Containing the sphaleron, the multisphalerons and the
sphaleron-antisphaleron pair at finite mixing angle, the ansatz further allows
the construction of the sphaleron and multisphaleron barriers and of the
bisphalerons at finite mixing angle. We conjecture that further solutions

A comparison of methods for treatment selection in seamless phase II/III clinical trials incorporating information on short-term endpoints
In an adaptive seamless phase II/III clinical trial interim
analysis data are used for treatment selection, enabling resources to be focussed on comparison of more effective treatment(s) with a control. In this paper we compare two methods recently proposed to enable use of short-term endpoint data for decision-making at the interim analysis. The comparison focusses on the power and the probability of correctly identifying the most promising treatment. We show that the choice of method depends on how well short-term data predict the best treatment, which may be measured by the correlation between treatment effects on short-term and long-term endpoints
Multisphalerons in the Weinberg-Salam Theory
We construct multisphaleron solutions in the Weinberg-Salam theory. The
multisphaleron solutions carry Chern-Simons charge , where is an
integer, counting the winding of the fields in the azimuthal angle. The
well-known sphaleron has . The multisphalerons possess axial symmetry and
parity reflection symmetry. We vary the Higgs mass and the mixing angle. For
small the energies of the multisphalerons are on the order of times the
energy of the sphaleron and their magnetic dipole moments are on the order of

The repulsion between localization centers in the Anderson model
In this note we show that, a simple combination of deep results in the theory
of random Schr\"odinger operators yields a quantitative estimate of the fact
that the localization centers become far apart, as corresponding energies are
close together
Cluster Monte Carlo Simulations of the Nematic--Isotropic Transition
We report the results of simulations of the Lebwohl-Lasher model of the
nematic-isotropic transition using a new cluster Monte Carlo algorithm. The
algorithm is a modification of the Wolff algorithm for spin systems, and
greatly reduces critical slowing down. We calculate the free energy in the
neighborhood of the transition for systems up to linear size 70. We find a
double well structure with a barrier that grows with increasing system size,
obeying finite size scaling for systems of size greater than 35. We thus obtain
an estimate of the value of the transition temperature in the thermodynamic

Nondegenerate Fermions in the Background of the Sphaleron Barrier
We consider level crossing in the background of the sphaleron barrier for
nondegenerate fermions. The mass splitting within the fermion doublets allows
only for an axially symmetric ansatz for the fermion fields. In the background
of the sphaleron we solve the partial differential equations for the fermion
functions. We find little angular dependence for our choice of ansatz. We
therefore propose a good approximate ansatz with radial functions only. We
generalize this approximate ansatz with radial functions only to fermions in
the background of the sphaleron barrier and argue, that it is a good

On the question of universality in \RPn and \On Lattice Sigma Models
We argue that there is no essential violation of universality in the
continuum limit of mixed \RPn and \On lattice sigma models in 2 dimensions,

Electrically Charged Sphalerons
We investigate the possibility that the Higgs sector of the Weinberg-Salam
model admits the existence of electrically charged, sphaleron states. Evidence
is provided through an asymptotic and numerical perturbative analysis about the
uncharged sphaleron. By introducing a toy model in two dimensions we
demonstrate that such electrically charged, unstable states can exist.
Crucially, they can have a comparable mass to their uncharged counterparts and
so may also play a role in electroweak baryogenesis, by opening up new channels

Level Crossing Along Sphaleron Barriers
In the electroweak sector of the standard model topologically inequivalent
vacua are separated by finite energy barriers, whose height is given by the
sphale\-ron. For large values of the Higgs mass there exist several sphaleron
solutions and the barriers are no longer symmetric. We construct paths of
classical configurations from one vacuum to a neighbouring one and solve the
fermion equations in the background field configurations along such paths,
choosing the fermions of a doublet degenerate in mass. As in the case of light
Higgs masses we observe the level crossing phenomenon also for large Higgs
