Oscillatory processes in the theory of particulate formation in supersaturated chemical solutions
We study a nonlinear problem which occurs in the theory of particulate formation in supersaturated chemical solutions. Mathematically, the problem involves the bifurcation of time-periodic solutions in an initial-boundary value problem involving a nonlinear integro-differential equation. The mechanism controlling the oscillatory states is revealed by combining the theory of characteristics for first order partial differential equations with the multi-time scale perturbation analysis of a certain third order system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations
Why Did Disciples Anoint with Oil for Healing in Mark 6:13?
This short essay explores the cultural meanings behind the practice of anointing people with oil for healing within the context of scripture. This work is the result of research which is not being published elsewhere due to space limitations, but is considered significant and of interest to many in the Global Church today. While it does not fit the full definition of an academic article, it remains an essay which can clarify and illuminate the issue of anointing with oil for many leaders and laity in the church
A Review of the Classification of the Genus Hydrastis (Ranunculaceae)
The genus Hydrastis has been variously classified as a monotypic taxon in the Ranunculaceae, the Berberidaceae, the Glaucidiaceae, or its own monogeneric family, the Hydrastidaceae. The objectives of this paper were 1) to review the previous classifications of Hydrastis and 2) to critique a recent paper by Tobe and Keating reevaluating the classification of the genus based on comparative morphological and anatomical studies. One conclusion of this review was that Tobe and Keating overlooked certain important papers which might have substantially altered their conclusions, viz., that Hydrastis is sufficiently distinct from the other genera of the Ranunculaceae to warrant a classification as a monogeneric family. Another conclusion was that, with the present information available, Hydrastis can be classified as a subfamily within the Ranunculaceae, but that molecular data might well alter this conclusion
Impact of an Occupation-based Practice (OBP) Learning Module on Perceptions of OBP and Selection of Occupation-based interventions By Occupational Therapy Assistant Students
The purpose of this Capstone project was to immerse OTA students in classroom experiences designed to increase their knowledge of key concepts of occupation, OBP, and ability to select occupation-based interventions. The hypothesis of the researcher was that engagement in the module would create an increase in OTA student knowledge in the areas of occupation and OBP, as well as the ability to select occupation-based interventions based on client scenarios.
Prior to engagement in module class sessions, students engaged in pretesting activities, consisting of demographic information, a short essay, and an intervention selection task. Once completed, students participated in a module on occupation and OBP over two class sessions. At the conclusion of the module, students engaged in posttesting, completing the same activities as in the posttesting portion of the module and an additional survey on preferred instructional strategies.
The Capstone project provided education in the areas of occupation and OBP to 39 first-semester OTA students. By taking the OBP module students were able to increase their knowledge regarding these concepts which are vital to the profession of OT. The results of the project demonstrated significant learning regarding occupation, OBP, and the ability to select occupation-based interventions
A normal form for excitable media
We present a normal form for travelling waves in one-dimensional excitable
media in form of a differential delay equation. The normal form is built around
the well-known saddle-node bifurcation generically present in excitable media.
Finite wavelength effects are captured by a delay. The normal form describes
the behaviour of single pulses in a periodic domain and also the richer
behaviour of wave trains. The normal form exhibits a symmetry preserving Hopf
bifurcation which may coalesce with the saddle-node in a Bogdanov-Takens point,
and a symmetry breaking spatially inhomogeneous pitchfork bifurcation. We
verify the existence of these bifurcations in numerical simulations. The
parameters of the normal form are determined and its predictions are tested
against numerical simulations of partial differential equation models of

Tacit to Explicit Knowledge Transfer in a University Health Care Program: Use of Student-Professor and Professor-Professor Collaboration
Student feedback indicated difficulty applying Occupational Therapy values such as “participation in meaningful occupations” into clinical interventions. Two instructors of a components-based course and a theory course collaborated to link practical OT interventions to conceptual OT models. Use of a model for transfer of tacit knowledge was utilized. Each instructor kept a reflective diary. An iterative process for a semester attempted to transfer learned explicit knowledge into an integrated intuitive ‘art of the therapy’ which incorporated Occupational Science core concepts. Worksheets were developed to make the pathway more explicit. By semester’s end, students completed a comprehensive plan for client care
Dynamic behaviors in directed networks
Motivated by the abundance of directed synaptic couplings in a real
biological neuronal network, we investigate the synchronization behavior of the
Hodgkin-Huxley model in a directed network. We start from the standard model of
the Watts-Strogatz undirected network and then change undirected edges to
directed arcs with a given probability, still preserving the connectivity of
the network. A generalized clustering coefficient for directed networks is
defined and used to investigate the interplay between the synchronization
behavior and underlying structural properties of directed networks. We observe
that the directedness of complex networks plays an important role in emerging
dynamical behaviors, which is also confirmed by a numerical study of the
sociological game theoretic voter model on directed networks
Response to sub-threshold stimulus is enhanced by spatially heterogeneous activity
Sub-threshold stimuli cannot initiate excitations in active media, but
surprisingly as we show in this paper, they can alter the time-evolution of
spatially heterogeneous activity by modifying the recovery dynamics. This
results in significant reduction of waveback velocity which may lead to spatial
coherence, terminating all activity in the medium including spatiotemporal
chaos. We analytically derive model-independent conditions for which such
