Measurement of local creep properties in stainless steel welds
A high temperature measurement system for creep deformation based on the digital image correlation (DIC) technique is described. The new system is applied to study the behaviour of a multi-pass welded joint in a high temperature tensile test and a load controlled creep test at 545°C. Spatially resolved tensile properties and time dependent creep deformation properties across a thick section type 316 stainless steel multi-pass welded joint are presented and discussed. Significantly lower creep strain rates are observed in the HAZ than in the parent material which is attributed to the introduction of substantial plastic strain in the parent material on initial loading. The weld metal shows the fastest creep rates and a variation that appear to correlate with individual weld passes. The visual information provides not only the local creep strain distribution but also the reduction of area and true stress distribution based on strains measured in the transverse direction. The results demonstrate the capability of the DIC technique for full field measurement of displacement and strain at high temperature long term creep tests
Heisenberg-type higher order symmetries of superintegrable systems separable in cartesian coordinates
Heisenberg-type higher order symmetries are studied for both classical and
quantum mechanical systems separable in cartesian coordinates. A few particular
cases of this type of superintegrable systems were already considered in the
literature, but here they are characterized in full generality together with
their integrability properties. Some of these systems are defined only in a
region of , and in general they do not include bounded solutions.
The quantum symmetries and potentials are shown to reduce to their
superintegrable classical analogs in the limit.Comment: 23 Pages, 3 figures, To appear in Nonlinearit
Demosaicing images from colour cameras for digital image correlation
Digital Image Correlation is not the intended use for consumer colour cameras, but with care they can be successfully employed in such a role. The main obstacle is the sparsely sampled colour data caused by the use of a colour filter array (CFA) to separate the colour channels. It is shown that the method used to convert consumer camera raw files into a monochrome image suitable for digital image correlation (DIC) can have a significant effect on the DIC output. A number of widely available software packages and two in-house methods are evaluated in terms of their performance when used with DIC. Using an in-plane rotating disc to produce a highly constrained displacement field, it was found that the bicubic spline based in-house demosaicing method outperformed the other methods in terms of accuracy and aliasing suppression
Molecular-dynamics simulations of stacking-fault-induced dislocation annihilation in pre-strained ultrathin single-crystalline copper films
We report results of large-scale molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations of
dynamic deformation under biaxial tensile strain of pre-strained
single-crystalline nanometer-scale-thick face-centered cubic (fcc) copper
films. Our results show that stacking faults, which are abundantly present in
fcc metals, may play a significant role in the dissociation, cross-slip, and
eventual annihilation of dislocations in small-volume structures of fcc metals.
The underlying mechanisms are mediated by interactions within and between
extended dislocations that lead to annihilation of Shockley partial
dislocations or formation of perfect dislocations. Our findings demonstrate
dislocation starvation in small-volume structures with ultra-thin film
geometry, governed by a mechanism other than dislocation escape to free
surfaces, and underline the significant role of geometry in determining the
mechanical response of metallic small-volume structures.Comment: 28 pages, 3 figure
Effect of surface roughness on drying speed of drying lamellas in veneer roller dryer
Lamellas, which are defined as top layers of multilayer parquet and favourable to wood veneer can be dried in jet ventilated automatic veneer roller dryer due to short drying period. The objective of this study is to determine the effect of surface roughness on the drying speed of the veneer roller dryer. Quercus spp., frequently used tree specie in Turkish solid wood and multilayer parquet industries was chosen as material in this study. Pre-dried lamella blocks were cut into 4 different machines. As aresult, 4 test groups of lamellas displaying different surface roughness values were obtained. Lamellas which belong to each of these 4 test groups were also divided into 2 sub-groups and dried at 90 and 130°C drying temperatures. Drying was evaluated in relation to drying speed. Mitutoyo SJ 301 profilmeter was used for determining surface roughness values. Drying speed of lamellas was expressed as: dividing difference of initial moisture content and final moisture content values to dryingtime value. The result of variance analyses showed differences between groups as surface roughness values. There was no difference between groups as drying speed were determined at 90 and 130°C temperatures. Furthermore, the relation between surface roughness values and drying speed was searched using correlation analysis and no significant relationship was found. Finally, it was determined that there was no effect of surface roughness on drying speed in radial cut, pre-dried lamellas, which have surface roughness values between 10.464 and 15.064 ìm, drying in jet ventilated roller dryer, at 90 and 130°C temperatures
Plasmonic light-sensitive skins of nanocrystal monolayers
Cataloged from PDF version of article. We report plasmonically coupled light-sensitive skins of nanocrystal monolayers that exhibit sensitivity enhancement and spectral range extension with plasmonic nanostructures embedded in their photosensitive nanocrystal platforms. The deposited plasmonic silver nanoparticles of the device increase the optical absorption of a CdTe nanocrystal monolayer incorporated in the device. Controlled separation of these metallic nanoparticles in the vicinity of semiconductor nanocrystals enables optimization of the photovoltage buildup in the proposed nanostructure platform. The enhancement factor was found to depend on the excitation wavelength. We observed broadband sensitivity improvement (across 400-650 nm), with a 2.6-fold enhancement factor around the localized plasmon resonance peak. The simulation results were found to agree well with the experimental data. Such plasmonically enhanced nanocrystal skins hold great promise for large-area UV/visible sensing applications

Numerical study of strength mismatch in cross-weld tensile testing
The strength mismatch effect on the deformation behaviour of defect-free cross-weld tensile specimens, where there is a variation in strength along the length of the specimen, was investigated through 2D finite element analysis. A simple bi-material model, which is generally used in current engineering assessments (e.g. R6 “Assessment of the integrity of structures containing defects”) to examine the strength mismatch effect on the deformation and fracture behaviour of a weld which actually includes a heat-affected-zone, could lead to non- conservative or overly conservative predictions. In fusion welded components, one would generally observe that there is a heat-affected zone where the material properties are different from the weld and base material, and there is a continuous gradient of properties between the two. The material properties in HAZ are generally assigned discretely; however, in our multi-material model these properties are successfully assigned continuously by embedding subroutines into finite element model. This multi-material approach was used to examine the effect of strength mismatch on the local and global deformation behavior of fusion welds. It has been found that the bi-material modeling, by ignoring the HAZ, and multi-material discrete HAZ modeling of the cross-weld specimens leads to unrealistically biaxial stresses at the interfaces where there is an abrupt variation of the material properties. However, multi- material continuous HAZ modeling eliminates unrealistic stress biaxiality and enables to examine the local deformation more accurately. It was also found that the global stress-strain behaviour obtained using the bi- material and multi-material modeling is different
Phenotypic Type 2 Diabetes in Obese Youth: Insulin Sensitivity and Secretion in Islet Cell Antibody–Negative Versus –Positive Patients
OBJECTIVE— Some obese youth with a clinical diagnosis of type 2 diabetes have evidence of islet cell autoimmunity with positive autoantibodies. In this study, we investigated the differences in insulin sensitivity and secretion between autoantibody-negative (Ab−) and -positive (Ab+) youth with clinically diagnosed type 2 diabetes in comparison with control subjects
