Trapping of a random walk by diffusing traps
We present a systematic analytical approach to the trapping of a random walk
by a finite density rho of diffusing traps in arbitrary dimension d. We confirm
the phenomenologically predicted e^{-c_d rho t^{d/2}} time decay of the
survival probability, and compute the dimension dependent constant c_d to
leading order within an eps=2-d expansion.Comment: 16 pages, to appear in J. Phys.
Specific heat of MgB_2 after irradiation
We studied the effect of disorder on the superconducting properties of
polycrystalline MgB_2 by specific-heat measurements. In the pristine state,
these measurements give a bulk confirmation of the presence of two
superconducting gaps with 2 Delta 0 / k_B T_c = 1.3 and 3.9 with nearly equal
weights. The scattering introduced by irradiation suppresses T_c and tends to
average the two gaps although less than predicted by theory. We also found that
by a suitable irradiation process by fast neutrons, a substantial bulk increase
of dH_{c2}/dT at T_c can be obtained without sacrificing more than a few
degrees in T_c. The upper critical field of the sample after irradiation

Oxidized renewable materials for the removal of cobalt(II) and copper(II) from aqueous solution using in batch and fixed-bed column adsorption.
Batch and continuous adsorption of Co2+ and Cu2+ from aqueous solutions by oxidized sugarcane bagasse (SBox) and oxidized cellulose (Cox) were investigated. The oxidation reaction of sugarcane bagasse and cellulose was made with a mixture of H3PO4?NaNO2 to obtain SBox and Cox, with the introduction of high number of carboxylic acid functions, 4.5 and 4.8?mmol/g, respectively. The adsorption kinetics of Co2+ and Cu2+ on SBox and Cox were modeled using two models (pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order) and the rate-limiting step controlling the adsorption was evaluated by Boyd and intraparticle diffusion models. The Sips and Langmuir models better fitted the isotherms with values of maximum adsorption capacity of 0.68 and 0.37?mmol/g for Co2+ and 1.20 and 0.57?mmol/g for Cu2+ adsorption on Cox and SBox, respectively. The reuse of both spent adsorbents was evaluated. Adsorption of Cu2+ and Co2+ on SBox in continuous was evaluated using a 22 factorial design with spatial time and initial metal concentration as independent variables and and effective use of the bed as responses. The breakthrough curves were very well described by the Bohart?Adams original model and the values for Co2+ and Cu2+ were 0.22 and 0.55?mmol/g. SBox confirmed to be a promising biomaterial for application on a large scale
Optimal Opacity on Financial Markets
We analyze the incentives for information disclosure in financial markets. We show that borrowers may have incentives to voluntarily withhold information and that doing so is most attractive for claims that are inherently hard to value, such as portfolios of subprime mortgages. Interestingly, opacity may be optimal even though it increases informational asymmetries between contracting parties. Finally, in our setting a government can intervene in ways that ensure the liquidity of financial markets and that resemble the initial plans for TARP. Even if such interventions are ex-post optimal, they affect incentives for information disclosure and have ambiguous ex-ante effects
Impure Public Goods and Technological Interdependencies
Impure public goods represent an important group of goods. Almost every public good exerts not only effects which are public to all but also effects which are private to the producer of this good. What is often omitted in the analysis of impure public goods is the fact that – regularly – these private effects can also be generated independently of the public good. In our analysis we focus on the effects alternative technologies – independently generating the private effects of the public good – may have on the provision of impure public goods. After the investigation in an analytical impure public good model, we numerically simulate the effects of alternative technologies in a parameterized model for climate policy in Germany
