Global unions: chasing the dream or building the reality?
This article takes as its theme the global restructuring of capital and its impact on worker organization. It argues for a reassertion of class in any analysis of global solidarity, and assesses the opportunities and barriers to effective global unionization. Rooted in the UK experience, the article analyzes the impact of the European social dimension on trade unions, before taking the discussion into a global dimension. It concludes by suggesting that there are reasons for cautious optimism in terms of solidarity building, despite difficult historical legacies and the common replacement of action with rhetoric
Percolation Transition in the random antiferromagnetic spin-1 chain
We give a physical description in terms of percolation theory of the phase
transition that occurs when the disorder increases in the random
antiferromagnetic spin-1 chain between a gapless phase with topological order
and a random singlet phase. We study the statistical properties of the
percolation clusters by numerical simulations, and we compute exact exponents
characterizing the transition by a real-space renormalization group
calculation.Comment: 9 pages, 4 encapsulated Postscript figures, REVTeX 3.
Low Energy Properties of the Random Spin-1/2 Ferromagnetic-Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Chain
The low energy properties of the spin-1/2 random Heisenberg chain with
ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions are studied by means of the
density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and real space renormalization
group (RSRG) method for finite chains. The results of the two methods are
consistent with each other. The deviation of the gap distribution from that of
the random singlet phase and the formation of the large-spin state is observed
even for relatively small systems. For a small fraction of the ferromagnetic
bond, the effect of the crossover to the random singlet phase on the low
temperature susceptibility and specific heat is discussed. The crossover
concentration of the ferromagnetic bond is estimated from the numerical data.Comment: 11 pages, revtex, figures upon reques
Density Matrix Renormalization Group Study of the Haldane Phase in Random One-Dimensional Antiferromagnets
It is conjectured that the Haldane phase of the S=1 antiferromagnetic
Heisenberg chain and the ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic alternating
Heisenberg chain is stable against any strength of randomness, because of
imposed breakdown of translational symmetry. This conjecture is confirmed by
the density matrix renormalization group calculation of the string order
parameter and the energy gap distribution.Comment: 4 Pages, 7 figures; Considerable revisions are made in abstract and

Current-voltage scaling of a Josephson-junction array at irrational frustration
Numerical simulations of the current-voltage characteristics of an ordered
two-dimensional Josephson junction array at an irrational flux quantum per
plaquette are presented. The results are consistent with an scaling analysis
which assumes a zero temperature vortex glass transition. The thermal
correlation length exponent characterizing this transition is found to be
significantly different from the corresponding value for vortex-glass models in
disordered two-dimensional superconductors. This leads to a current scale where
nonlinearities appear in the current-voltage characteristics decreasing with
temperature roughly as in contrast with the behavior expected
for disordered models.Comment: RevTex 3.0, 12 pages with Latex figures, to appear in Phys. Rev. B

A powerful bursting radio source towards the Galactic Centre
Transient astronomical sources are typically powered by compact objects and
usually signify highly explosive or dynamic events. While radio astronomy has
an impressive record of obtaining high time resolution observations, usually it
is achieved in quite narrow fields-of-view. Consequently, the dynamic radio sky
is poorly sampled, in contrast to the situation in the X- and gamma-ray bands
in which wide-field instruments routinely detect transient sources. Here we
report a new transient source, GCRT J1745-3009, detected in 2002 during a
moderately wide-field radio transient monitoring program of the Galactic center
(GC) region at 0.33 GHz. The characteristics of its bursts are unlike those
known for any other class of radio transient. If located in or near the GC, its
brightness temperature (~10^16 K) and the implied energy density within GCRT
J1745-3009 vastly exceeds that observed in most other classes of radio
astronomical sources, and is consistent with coherent emission processes rarely
observed. We conclude that GCRT J1745-3009 is the first member of a new class
of radio transient sources, the first of possibly many new classes to be
identified through current and upcoming radio surveys.Comment: 16 pages including 3 figures. Appears in Nature, 3 March 200
A Search for the Near-Infrared Counterpart to GCRT J1745-3009
We present an optical/near-infrared search for a counterpart to the
perplexing radio transient GCRT J1745-3009, a source located ~1 degree from the
Galactic Center. Motivated by some similarities to radio bursts from nearby
ultracool dwarfs, and by a distance upper limit of 70 pc for the emission to
not violate the 1e12 K brightness temperature limit for incoherent radiation,
we searched for a nearby star at the position of GCRT J1745-3009. We found only
a single marginal candidate, limiting the presence of any late-type star to >1
kpc (spectral types earlier than M9), >200 pc (spectral types L and T0-T4), and
>100 pc (spectral types T4-T7), thus severely restricting the possible local
counterparts to GCRT J1745-3009. We also exclude any white dwarf within 1 kpc
or a supergiant star out to the distance of the Galactic Center as possible
counterparts. This implies that GCRT J1745-3009 likely requires a coherent
emission process, although whether or not it reflects a new class of sources is
unclear.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures. Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical
