Mobility, Nostalgia and Self Transformation in Nepali Literature: Reading Narayan Wagle’s Palpasa Café as Travel Narrative

“To travel is to make a journey, a movement through space. Possibly this journey is epic in scale […]and takes place within the limits of the traveller’s own country or region, or even just their immediate locality”. (Carl Thompson, Travel Writing, p9). The travel, whether it is long or short, necessitates the presence of space as its ulterior dependence. Narayan Wagle, the Nepali travel journalist, in his first experimentation of fiction, named Palpasa Café, brings in his travel encounters in the up skirts of Nepalaya. Fusing fiction with journalism, Wagle presents the blurring division between fact and fiction. In this manner, Wagle can be called as an “embroider”, what Bruce Chatwin coined instead of traveller, as Chatwin advocated the use of adventures with fictional embellishments. The postmodern idea of travel introduces tourism. “Tourism herald postmodernism, it is a product of the rise of consumerist culture, leisure and technological innovation” (Caren Kaplan, Questions of Travel, p 27). Attributing the terms embroider, tourist and lifestyle-traveller would analyse the Nepaliness in Drishya or the “I’’ in the book in three different strategies. The first term induced Wagle to fictionalise the travel without losing its factual representation of Nepal. The second gives him confidence to see the places as a stranger to introduce alterity by drawing similarities and differences. The third transforms himself to check his identity in terms of a person who evaluates the life of the people of Nepalaya. This paper analyses how the novel portrays mobility, nostalgia and self-transformation in the form of a travel narrative

This paper deals with the contemporary status of English Language Teaching in India. This analysis evaluates the past and the present pattern of English teaching. Unlike the vernacular language teaching, ELT requires more of practical approach as it is being a foreign language. Most of the Indian languages have been learnt and taught only where the particular language is spoken. But, English is in demand beyond the boundaries of states. With having a 74% of Literates in India, there is still only 13% of theme could read and write the English well. When the country is growing in business revolution, pace up with that in the stream of English has become inevitable. Hence, a critical review of ELT in India is not only going to review the pattern but also the suitability of the sorts

This study analyses with the main drawbacks of Teaching Communicative Methods in English language teaching and the possible solutions that may be found. As it is a student centric approach, the teacher should think about his/her position in the class and understand that the conventional class has changed considerably. Here, I lay down concepts like “the limitations of conventional teachingâ€, “controlled methods†and “liberal methods†so as the “students performanceâ€. Ultimately, we could get more modernised approach to the English Language Teaching, as the study ends which could also be more student friendly one

IN VITRO STUDIES ON THE ANTIDIABETIC ACTIVITY OF 2-THIOHYDANTOIN USING α-amylase AND α-GLUCOSIDASE

Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate the inhibitory effect of 2-thiohydantoin on the enzymes α-amylase and α-glucosidase in vitro as an antidiabetic therapeutic approach to reduce gastrointestinal glucose production. Methods: Antidiabetic activity of the compound, 2-thiohydantoin was measured using the enzymes α-amylase and α-glucosidase. Results: Half-maximal inhibitory concentration of the antidiabetic α-amylase was found to be 410.35 μg/ml and α-glucosidase was found to be 356.33 μg/ml, respectively. Conclusion: The result obtained in the in vitro enzyme assay suggests the antidiabetic activity of 2-thiohydantoin

Background: Preeclampsia in pregnancy is a frequently encountered entity. Recent evidence suggests that preeclampsia can be considered as a screening test for future cardiovascular problems and abnormalities in pregnancy may help in counselling patients regarding future risk of cardiovascular problems. Electrocardiography (ECG) is a simple tool for detecting cardiovascular problems. While physiological changes in the ECG in pregnancy have been documented, the pattern of ECG in hypertensive disorders of pregnancy is not adequately studied in India. This formed the basis of the study. Methods: 140 patients who have been diagnosed as gestational hypertension and pre-eclampsia during the pregnancy were studied in the antenatal period. An ECG (non-portable, standard, 12 lead) available in the hospital was done, and the ECG was reported by the physician on-call.Results: The average age distribution of the patients was 28.26 years. Majority of the patients in the study were primigravidae. 35% of the patients were more than 37 weeks of gestation. 20 patients showed electrocardiographic abnormalities. The most common abnormality was sinus tachycardia and left axis deviation. Conclusions: ECG abnormalities are seen in 14.2% of preeclamptic women. ECG abnormalities in preeclamptic women studied had no relation to the maternal age, gestational age; parity and use of antihypertensives

Background: Present study was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of placental cord blood drainage after vaginal delivery in reducing the duration and blood loss during third stage of labour in Primi/Multigravida (up to G3) between the age group of 18-35 years, with term, singleton alive pregnancy with vertex presentation, adequate liqour, with average size (estimated foetal weight 2-4Kg) fetus, without any complications, expected to spontaneous vaginal delivery. Methods: It is a randomized clinical controlled trial on 400 pregnant women admitted in labour ward at KGMCH, Asaripallam, Kanyakumari district between January 2015 to December 2015. All women enrolled were subjected to history taking general and obstetric examination. In the study group, placental end of the previously clamped and cut umbilical cord was unclamped immediately after vaginal delivery, while remaining clamped in the control group. Results: Duration of third stage of labour blood loss during third stage postpartum hemorrhage and need for blood transfusion haemoglobin difference between antenatal and postnatal period was significantly reduced in the study group than control group. Conclusions: Placental Cord blood drainage is simple, safe, non-invasive method which reduces the duration and blood loss of third stage of Labour.

Sphaeranthus amaranthoides commonly known as garden Lavender / Kesavardini is used to cure eczema, skin diseases, worm infestation, pile, aphrodisiac etc, from Ancient Era. In present investigation the auxillary buds and shoot tips were used as explants for invitro micropropogation. The initiation and best multiple shoots was developed at 4mg/L of BAP with a highest frequency of 70% and good root proliferation was observed at 2.0mg/L of IBA
