    Appraising occupational therapy students' perceptions of virtual reality as a pedagogical innovation

    Virtual reality (VR) offers a forum for a person to immerse themselves in an artificial world. Despite the emergence of VR as a teaching tool, a strong base to understand the pedagogical impact of VR within post-secondary education is absent. Furthermore, there is minimal literature on how VR can be used pedagogically with medical and rehabilitation professional students. This pilot research project sought to answer “how do students perceive that VR should be used within occupational therapy curricula after trialling a variety of educational modules?” Study participants were Masters of Occupational Therapy Students who trialed four different educational modules using four different technological solutions. After each trial they completed a questionnaire specific to the learning and then completed an overall survey about how VR should be considered for future use in the curriculum. Findings showcased that students preferred a higher level of immersion and interaction. They showed less preference for the lower technological and less immersive learning opportunities. Students shared that they would welcome VR solutions to learn about assessment, anatomy and musculoskeletal function, neuroanatomy and neurological foundations and for cases as a preparation for clinical fieldwork experiences. Future research is required to evaluate the impact of a larger scale roll out of specific learning approaches

    Engaging Employers in Apprentice Training: Focus Group Insights from Small-to-Medium-Sized Employers in Ontario, Canada

    Several factors have been identified to influence the registration and retention of apprentices in the construction trades. Employer engagement is a key factor to promote growth in apprenticeships in the construction trades as participation rates continue to be low among small-to-medium-sized employers. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of the Ontario Electrical League’s (OEL) employer mentorship program through the perspectives of small-to-medium-sized employers using a qualitative approach. Two focus groups were conducted virtually with 11 employers. Focus group audio transcripts were recorded and transcribed for thematic analysis. Themes were generated using a data-driven approach to examine the relationships between mentorship program outcomes and perspectives on industry-related recruitment and retention barriers. Three themes were identified: (a) long-term apprentice recruitment and retention challenges; (b) equity and mental health in the workplace; and (c) industry challenges and mentorship program outcomes. Generally, this sample of employers appreciated the value of the OEL mentorship program through praise of the continued educational support, employer management expertise, hiring resources, and apprentice onboarding tools despite industry barriers in trade stigma, equity and mental health in the workplace, and recruitment and retention challenges. Industry partners should work with these small-to-medium-sized employers to develop workplace initiatives and engage external partners to provide ongoing apprenticeship mentorship support to address the recruitment and retention barriers identified in this study

    Mental Health Outcomes among Electricians and Plumbers in Ontario, Canada: Analysis of Burnout and Work-Related Factors

    (i) Background: Working in the electrical and plumbing sectors is physically demanding, and the incidence of physical injury and work disability is high. This study aimed to assess the mental health and well-being of skilled trades workers working in the electrical and plumbing sectors; (ii) Methods: Forty participants completed an online survey assessing burnout, work-related factors, and mental health issues. Data were analyzed to determine the association between demographics, the availability, and importance of work-related factors, and burnout using a two-sample Mann&ndash;Whitney U test; (iii) Results: Our findings showed that among the work-related factors, workplace safety, family commitments, income and benefits, and full-time employment opportunities might be crucial factors to keep study participants working at their current position. Financial support for external training, which was found to be the most important factor in preventing colleague-related burnout, was available to the satisfaction of approximately 50% of the participants; (iv) Conclusion: Work-related factors such as workplace safety and the availability and support for external training may be protective against all types of burnout among this population. Future studies may consider a larger sample size with a more diverse group of participants and perform an intersectional analysis to incorporate minority identities in the analyses

    Reaction Time Variability in HIV-Positive Individuals

    Progression of HIV/AIDS is frequently associated with frontal/subcortical dysfunction and mean reaction time (RT) slowing. Beyond group means, within-subject variability of RT has been found to be particularly sensitive to frontal/subcortical dysfunction in other populations. However, the possible relevance of RT variability to HIV/AIDS patients remains unknown. This study evaluated the relationships between RT variability and indicators such as neurocognitive, behavioral, and immunological status. A total of 46 HIV-positive adults on antiretroviral medication regimens were included in this study. Overall performance of this sample was poorer than normative means on measures of RT latency, RT variability, and traditional neurocognitive domains. Results demonstrated that the measures of RT variability were associated with global cognition, medication adherence rates, and peak immunological dysfunction, above and beyond the effects of RT latency. These preliminary findings suggest that measures of RT variability may provide enhanced sensitivity to neurocognitive disease burden in HIV/AIDS relative to more traditional measures of mean RT or cognitive function

    Functional work disability from the perspectives of persons with systemic lupus erythematosus: a qualitative thematic analysis

    Abstract Background Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) disease symptoms that can significantly restrict work ability and work participation resulting in reduced mental well-being. This study investigates the significant impact of work participation and disability on the mental wellbeing, health-related quality of life, and disease-related outcomes in individuals with SLE. Methods With the objective of creating an SLE-related functional profile rooted in work disability (WD) prevention, 46 SLE patients were purposively recruited from Canadian medical centres. Through semi-structured interviews guided by a WD prevention framework, factors associated with WD and lived experiences of SLE-related WD were qualitatively explored. Braun and Clarke’s six-stage inductive thematic analysis was used to organize the data. Results Most participants experienced some form of work disability across their employment history related to their clinical manifestations of SLE, including hospitalizations, physical limitations, fatigue, and neurocognitive symptoms (e.g. brain fog). Thematic analysis revealed three key themes: (a) the influence of illness experience on work, (b) the stigmatization of illness disclosure, and (c) the availability of workplace resources/accommodations. Participants emphasized the desirability of work with reduced physical and mental demands, increased personal control, and workplace flexibility to prevent WD. Conclusion The study underscores the need for a collaborative, multi-component, and multidisciplinary intervention targeting psychosocial and workplace factors to establish a goal-oriented preventative framework, potentially improving WD outcomes in SLE individuals
