An RXTE study of M87 and the core of the Virgo cluster
We present hard X-ray observations of the nearby radio galaxy M87 and the
core of the Virgo cluster using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. These are the
first hard X-ray observations of M87 not affected by contamination from the
nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC4388. Thermal emission from Virgo's intracluster
medium is clearly detected and has a spectrum indicative of kT=2.5keV plasma
with approximately 25% cosmic abundances. No non-thermal (power-law) emission
from M87 is detected in the hard X-ray band, with fluctuations in the Cosmic
X-ray Background being the limiting factor. Combining with ROSAT data, we infer
that the X-ray spectrum of the M87 core and jet must be steep (Gamma_core>1.90$
and Gamma_jet>1.75), and we discuss the implications of this result. In
particular, these results are consistent with M87 being a mis-aligned BL-Lac

Global Quantum Discord in Multipartite Systems
We propose a global measure for quantum correlations in multipartite systems,
which is obtained by suitably recasting the quantum discord in terms of
relative entropy and local von Neumann measurements. The measure is symmetric
with respect to subsystem exchange and is shown to be non-negative for an
arbitrary state. As an illustration, we consider tripartite correlations in the
Werner-GHZ state and multipartite correlations at quantum criticality. In
particular, in contrast with the pairwise quantum discord, we show that the
global quantum discord is able to characterize the infinite-order quantum phase

Finite-size effects in Anderson localization of one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates
We investigate the disorder-induced localization transition in Bose-Einstein
condensates for the Anderson and Aubry-Andre models in the non-interacting
limit using exact diagonalization. We show that, in addition to the standard
superfluid fraction, other tools such as the entanglement and fidelity can
provide clear signatures of the transition. Interestingly, the fidelity
exhibits good sensitivity even for small lattices. Effects of the system size
on these quantities are analyzed in detail, including the determination of a
finite-size-scaling law for the critical disorder strength in the case of the

Influence of M-phase chromatin on the anisotropy of microtubule asters
In many eukaryotic cells going through M-phase, a bipolar spindle is formed by microtubules nucleated from centrosomes. These microtubules, in addition to being "captured" by kinetochores, may be stabilized by chromatin in two different ways: short-range stabilization effects may affect microtubules in close contact with the chromatin, while long-range stabilization effects may "guide" microtubule growth towards the chromatin (e.g., by introducing a diffusive gradient of an enzymatic activity that affects microtubule assembly). Here, we use both meiotic and mitotic extracts from Xenopus laevis eggs to study microtubule aster formation and microtubule dynamics in the presence of chromatin. In "low-speed" meiotic extracts, in the presence of salmon sperm chromatin, we find that short-range stabilization effects lead to a strong anisotropy of the microtubule asters. Analysis of the dynamic parameters of microtubule growth show that this anisotropy arises from a decrease in the catastrophe frequency, an increase in the rescue frequency and a decrease in the growth velocity. In this system we also find evidence for long-range "guidance" effects, which lead to a weak anisotropy of the asters. Statistically relevant results on these long-range effects are obtained in "high-speed" mitotic extracts in the presence of artificially constructed chromatin stripes. We find that aster anisotropy is biased in the direction of the chromatin and that the catastrophe frequency is reduced in its vicinity. In this system we also find a surprising dependence of the catastrophe and the rescue frequencies on the length of microtubules nucleated from centrosomes: the catastrophe frequency increase and the rescue frequency decreases with microtubule length
