Dynamics of Strongly Deformed Polymers in Solution
Bead spring models for polymers in solution are nonlinear if either the
finite extensibility of the polymer, excluded volume effects or hydrodynamic
interactions between polymer segments are taken into account. For such models
we use a powerful method for the determination of the complete relaxation
spectrum of fluctuations at {\it steady state}. In general, the spectrum and
modes differ significantly from those of the linear Rouse model. For a tethered
polymer in uniform flow the differences are mainly caused by an inhomogeneous
distribution of tension along the chain and are most pronounced due to the
finite chain extensibility. Beyond the dynamics of steady state fluctuations we
also investigate the nonlinear response of the polymer to a {\em large sudden
change} in the flow. This response exhibits several distinct regimes with
characteristic decay laws and shows features which are beyond the scope of
single mode theories such as the dumbbell model.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure
Early infant feeding and adiposity risk: from infancy to adulthood
Introduction: Systematic reviews suggest that a longer duration of breast-feeding is associated with a reduction in the risk of later overweight and obesity. Most studies examining breast-feeding in relation to adiposity have not used longitudinal analysis. In our study, we aimed to examine early infant feeding and adiposity risk in a longitudinal cohort from birth to young adulthood using new as well as published data.
Methods: Data from the Western Australian Pregnancy Cohort (Raine) Study in Perth, W.A., Australia, were used to examine associations between breast-feeding and measures of adiposity at 1, 2, 3, 6, 8, 10, 14, 17, and 20 years.
Results: Breast-feeding was measured in a number of ways. Longer breast-feeding (in months) was associated with reductions in weight z-scores between birth and 1 year (β = -0.027; p \u3c 0.001) in the adjusted analysis. At 3 years, breast-feeding for \u3c4 months increased the odds of infants experiencing early rapid growth (OR 2.05; 95% CI 1.43-2.94; p \u3c 0.001). From 1 to 8 years, children breast-fed for ≤4 months compared to ≥12 months had a significantly greater probability of exceeding the 95th percentile of weight. The age at which breast-feeding was stopped and a milk other than breast milk was introduced (introduction of formula milk) played a significant role in the trajectory of the BMI from birth to 14 years; the 4-month cutoff point was consistently associated with a higher BMI trajectory. Introduction of a milk other than breast milk before 6 months compared to at 6 months or later was a risk factor for being overweight or obese at 20 years of age (OR 1.47; 95% CI 1.12-1.93; p = 0.005).
Discussion: Breast-feeding until 6 months of age and beyond should be encouraged and is recommended for protection against increased adiposity in childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood. Adverse long-term effects of early growth acceleration are fundamental in later overweight and obesity. Formula feeding stimulates a higher postnatal growth velocity, whereas breast-feeding promotes slower growth and a reduced likelihood of overweight and obesity. Biological mechanisms underlying the protective effect of breast-feeding against obesity are based on the unique composition and metabolic and physiological responses to human milk
Higgs-boson masses and mixing matrices in the NMSSM: analysis of on-shell calculations
We analyze the Higgs-boson masses and mixing matrices in the NMSSM based on an on-shell (OS) renormalization of the gauge-boson and Higgs-boson masses and the parameters of the top/scalar top sector. We compare the implementation of the OS calculations in the codes NMSSMCALC and NMSSM-FeynHiggs up to O(αtαs). We identify the sources of discrepancies at the one- and at the twoloop level. Finally we compare the OS and DR evaluation as implemented in NMSSMCALC. The results are important ingredients for an estimate of the theoretical precision of Higgs-boson mass calculations in the NMSSM
Dynamics of a trapped Brownian particle in shear flows
The Brownian motion of a particle in a harmonic potential, which is
simultaneously exposed either to a linear shear flow or to a plane Poiseuille
flow is investigated. In the shear plane of both flows the probability
distribution of the particle becomes anisotropic and the dynamics is changed in
a characteristic manner compared to a trapped particle in a quiescent fluid.
The particle distribution takes either an elliptical or a parachute shape or a
superposition of both depending on the mean particle position in the shear
plane. Simultaneously, shear-induced cross-correlations between particle
fluctuations along orthogonal directions in the shear plane are found. They are
asymmetric in time. In Poiseuille flow thermal particle fluctuations
perpendicular to the flow direction in the shear plane induce a shift of the
particle's mean position away from the potential minimum. Two complementary
methods are suggested to measure shear-induced cross-correlations between
particle fluctuations along orthogonal directions.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure
The effects of maternal anxiety during pregnancy on IGF2/H19 methylation in cord blood
Compelling evidence suggests that maternal mental health in pregnancy can influence fetal development. The imprinted genes, insulin-like growth factor 2 (IGF2) and H19, are involved in fetal growth and each is regulated by DNA methylation. This study aimed to determine the association between maternal mental well-being during pregnancy and differentially methylated regions (DMRs) of IGF2 (DMR0) and the IGF2/H19 imprinting control region (ICR) in newborn offspring. Maternal depression, anxiety and perceived stress were assessed at 28 weeks of pregnancy in the Barwon Infant Study (n = 576). DNA methylation was measured in purified cord blood mononuclear cells using the Sequenom MassArray Platform. Maternal anxiety was associated with a decrease in average ICR methylation (Delta = -2.23%;95% CI = -3.68 to -0.77%), and across all six of the individual CpG units in anxious compared with non-anxious groups. Birth weight and sex modified the association between prenatal anxiety and infant methylation. When stratified into lower ( 3530 g) birth weight groups using the median birth weight, there was a stronger association between anxiety and ICR methylation in the lower birth weight group (Delta = -3.89%;95% CI = -6.06 to -1.72%), with no association in the higher birth weight group. When stratified by infant sex, there was a stronger association in female infants (Delta = -3.70%;95% CI = -5.90 to -1.51%) and no association in males. All the linear regression models were adjusted for maternal age, smoking and folate intake. These findings show that maternal anxiety in pregnancy is associated with decreased IGF2/H19 ICR DNA methylation in progeny at birth, particularly in female, low birth weight neonates. ICR methylation may help link poor maternal mental health and adverse birth outcomes, but further investigation is needed
Mineralogical Controls on the Ti Isotope Composition of Subduction Zone Magmas
The positive Ti isotope versus SiO2-content correlation in igneous rocks reflects the fractional crystallization of Ti-bearing oxide minerals. However, Ti isotope variations of subduction-related igneous rocks indicate that the Ti isotope compositions of their mantle sources are heterogeneous and additional mineral phases may promote Ti isotope fractionation. We have determined the Ti isotope composition of well-characterized subduction-related basalts, andesites and boninites. Samples from the Solomon Islands, the Troodos ophiolite in Cyprus, and Cape Vogel in Papua New Guinea show small but resolvable variations that may be related to differences in their mantle sources. Specifically, the δ49Ti of boninites (+0.109‰ to +0.168‰) is slightly higher than that of tholeiites (−0.027‰ to +0.111‰) from the same localities (Troodos in Cyprus and Cape Vogel in Papua New Guinea). Modeling suggests the partial melting of progressively depleted mantle sources where residual Cr-spinel plays a greater role in controlling the Ti budget during partial melting. More pronounced variations in δ49Ti are clearly linked to the fractional crystallization of Ti-oxides: Samples from Rabaul Volcanic Complex (New Britain, Papua New Guinea) show increasing δ49Ti (up to +0.373‰) with increasing Ti/V and decreasing Dy/Yb. Fractional crystallization models suggest that oxide minerals and amphibole are needed to sufficiently increase the δ49Ti of these magmas. Our study highlights that the combination of diagnostic trace element patterns and Ti isotope compositions in subduction-related igneous rocks can be a powerful tool to constrain petrogenetic processes and to discriminate between different crystallizing mineral phases
Influence of FADS Polymorphisms on Tracking of Serum Glycerophospholipid Fatty Acid Concentrations and Percentage Composition in Children
Tracking of fatty acid (FA) contribution to plasma or serum lipids over time was shown in children and adults. However, the potential role of FADS gene variants has not been investigated.
Serum GP FA composition of 331 children aged 2 and 6 years, participating in an ongoing birth cohort study, was analyzed. Correlation coefficients were estimated to describe FA tracking over 4 years and to assess the influence of FADS variants on tracking. We found low to moderate tracking (r = 0.12-0.49) of FA compositions and concentration between 2 and 6 years. Concentration changes of total monounsaturated FA and total saturated FA over time correlated closely (r = 0.79) but percentage values were unrelated (r = -0.02). Tracking for n-6 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (LC-PUFA) concentrations was lower in subjects homozygous for the major allele of FADS variants and higher in carriers of at least one minor allele, whereas for total n-3 LC-PUFA concentrations and compositions this was vice versa. For individual n-3 PUFA inconsistent results were found.
Serum GP FA composition shows low to moderate tracking over 4 years with a higher tracking for LC-PUFA metabolites than for their precursor FA. Serum PUFA levels and their tracking seem to be more influenced by lipid and lipoprotein metabolism than by FA specific pathways

Influence of Hydrodynamic Interactions on Mechanical Unfolding of Proteins
We incorporate hydrodynamic interactions in a structure-based model of
ubiquitin and demonstrate that the hydrodynamic coupling may reduce the peak
force when stretching the protein at constant speed, especially at larger
speeds. Hydrodynamic interactions are also shown to facilitate unfolding at

Distinguishing Asthma Phenotypes Using Machine Learning Approaches.
Asthma is not a single disease, but an umbrella term for a number of distinct diseases, each of which are caused by a distinct underlying pathophysiological mechanism. These discrete disease entities are often labelled as asthma endotypes. The discovery of different asthma subtypes has moved from subjective approaches in which putative phenotypes are assigned by experts to data-driven ones which incorporate machine learning. This review focuses on the methodological developments of one such machine learning technique-latent class analysis-and how it has contributed to distinguishing asthma and wheezing subtypes in childhood. It also gives a clinical perspective, presenting the findings of studies from the past 5 years that used this approach. The identification of true asthma endotypes may be a crucial step towards understanding their distinct pathophysiological mechanisms, which could ultimately lead to more precise prevention strategies, identification of novel therapeutic targets and the development of effective personalized therapies
