On the thickness of the double layer in ionic liquids

In this study, we examined the thickness of the electrical double layer (EDL) in ionic liquids using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We focused on the BF4- anion adsorption from 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EMImBF4) ionic liquid on the Au(111) surface. At both DFT and MD levels, we evaluated the capacitance-potential dependence for the Helmholtz model of the interface. Using MD simulations, we also explored a more realistic, multilayer EDL model accounting for the ion layering. Concurrent analysis of the DFT and MD results provides a ground for thinking whether the electrical double layer in ionic liquids is one- or multi-ionic-layer thick

The modENCODE Data Coordination Center: lessons in harvesting comprehensive experimental details.

The model organism Encyclopedia of DNA Elements (modENCODE) project is a National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) initiative designed to characterize the genomes of Drosophila melanogaster and Caenorhabditis elegans. A Data Coordination Center (DCC) was created to collect, store and catalog modENCODE data. An effective DCC must gather, organize and provide all primary, interpreted and analyzed data, and ensure the community is supplied with the knowledge of the experimental conditions, protocols and verification checks used to generate each primary data set. We present here the design principles of the modENCODE DCC, and describe the ramifications of collecting thorough and deep metadata for describing experiments, including the use of a wiki for capturing protocol and reagent information, and the BIR-TAB specification for linking biological samples to experimental results. modENCODE data can be found at http://www.modencode.org

modMine: flexible access to modENCODE data.

In an effort to comprehensively characterize the functional elements within the genomes of the important model organisms Drosophila melanogaster and Caenorhabditis elegans, the NHGRI model organism Encyclopaedia of DNA Elements (modENCODE) consortium has generated an enormous library of genomic data along with detailed, structured information on all aspects of the experiments. The modMine database (http://intermine.modencode.org) described here has been built by the modENCODE Data Coordination Center to allow the broader research community to (i) search for and download data sets of interest among the thousands generated by modENCODE; (ii) access the data in an integrated form together with non-modENCODE data sets; and (iii) facilitate fine-grained analysis of the above data. The sophisticated search features are possible because of the collection of extensive experimental metadata by the consortium. Interfaces are provided to allow both biologists and bioinformaticians to exploit these rich modENCODE data sets now available via modMine

Transcriptome analyses of the Giardia lamblia life cycle

The definitive version was published in Molecular and Biochemical Parasitology 174 (2010): 62-65, doi:10.1016/j.molbiopara.2010.05.010.We quantified mRNA abundance from 10 stages in the Giardia lamblia life cycle in vitro using Serial Analysis of Gene Expression (SAGE). 163 abundant transcripts were expressed constitutively. 71 transcripts were upregulated specifically during excystation and 42 during encystation. Nonetheless, the transcriptomes of cysts and trophozoites showed major differences. SAGE detected co-expressed clusters of 284 transcripts differentially expressed in cysts and excyzoites and 287 transcripts in vegetative trophozoites and encysting cells. All clusters included known genes and pathways as well as proteins unique to Giardia or diplomonads. SAGE analysis of the Giardia life cycle identified a number of kinases, phosphatases, and DNA replication proteins involved in excystation and encystation, which could be important for examining the roles of cell signaling in giardial differentiation. The clinical, epidemiological and laboratory characteristics of acute viral hepatitis С whith users of introvenous drugs

Viral hepatitis С remains a global problem of modern health care. It accounts for up to 20% of acute hepatitis, 70% of chronic hepatitis, 40% of liver cirrhosis in the terminal stage, from 15-20 to 60-70% of cases of hepatocellular carcinoma. The virus of hepatitis С has the highest horiogen potential. The aggravating factors have the significantly influence on the pathogenesis and clinical manifestations of HCV - infection, such as: alcoholism, drug addiction, medicinal liver disease, HBV/HCV mixed-infection. The patients with HCV, using drugs, have a shorter incubation period, more pronounced cytolytic and cholestatic syndromes, which affects on the clinical course and prognosis. This dictates the necessity to study the flow characteristics of HCV in drug users.Вирусный гепатит С (ВГС) продолжает оставаться глобальной проблемой современного здравоохранения. На его долю приходится до 20 % острых гепатитов, 70% хронических гепатитов, 40% циррозов печени в терминальной стадии, от 15-20 до 60-70 % случаев гепатоцеллюлярной карциномы. Вирус гепатита С обладает наиболее высоким хрониогенным потенциалом. На патогенез и клинические проявлениях HCV-инфекции существенное влияние оказывают отягощающие факторы: алкоголизм, наркомания, лекарственное поражение печени, HBV/HCV микст-инфекция. У больных ВГС, употребляющих наркотики, отмечается более короткий инкубационный период, более выраженные цитолитический и холестатический синдромы, что оказывает влияние ни клиническое течение и прогноз заболевания.
