Community Empowerment and Leadership in Cambodia
In an effort to strengthen the ability of Cambodian villagers living with landmines and explosive remnants of war to manage the mine/ERW threat, the Cambodian Mine Action Centre implemented the Community-Based Mine Risk Reduction project. The CBMRR project, with support from CMAC, helps local populations participate in mine-action projects and access victim-assistance services and community-development activities to alleviate mine risk
Quintessence with quadratic coupling to dark matter
We introduce a new form of coupling between dark energy and dark matter that
is quadratic in their energy densities. Then we investigate the background
dynamics when dark energy is in the form of exponential quintessence. The three
types of quadratic coupling all admit late-time accelerating critical points,
but these are not scaling solutions. We also show that two types of coupling
allow for a suitable matter era at early times and acceleration at late times,

Attitudes to Ageing and to Geriatric Medicine
The ageing of populations across the developed and developing world is a consequence of success (better nutrition and sanitation, improved medical care, greater choice about whether and when to have children) but older people are not always viewed or portrayed in a positive light, either in the hospital setting or in wider society. Similarly, geriatric medicine is a low prestige specialty, facing problems with recruitment. Even the British Geriatrics Society debates changing its name since "geriatrics" has "acquired negative connotations". Here, we briefly review the attitudes to geriatric medicine among medical professionals, including physicians, medical students and nurses. Societal attitudes to ageing are explored from different eras and across cultural perspectives. We consider how older people's own attitudes to their health may impact both their recovery from illness and life expectancy. We conclude that it is essential to consider the broader cultural milieu of medical schools, as this may have a greater influence than the formal curriculum on physicians' personality and conduct. Positive forces such as governmental edicts to abolish ageist practices may be undermined by what medical students hear and see on the wards. With the ageing of the inpatient population, it is critical that all physicians and nursing staff respect the ageing process and provide dignified and appropriate care to vulnerable older people
Treebank-based acquisition of a Chinese lexical-functional grammar
Scaling wide-coverage, constraint-based grammars such as Lexical-Functional Grammars (LFG) (Kaplan and Bresnan, 1982; Bresnan, 2001) or Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammars (HPSG) (Pollard and Sag, 1994) from fragments to naturally occurring unrestricted text is knowledge-intensive, time-consuming and (often prohibitively) expensive. A number of researchers have recently presented methods to automatically acquire wide-coverage, probabilistic constraint-based grammatical resources from treebanks (Cahill et al., 2002, Cahill et al., 2003; Cahill et al., 2004; Miyao et al., 2003; Miyao et al., 2004; Hockenmaier and Steedman, 2002; Hockenmaier, 2003), addressing the knowledge acquisition bottleneck in constraint-based grammar development. Research to date has concentrated on English and German. In this paper we report on an experiment to induce wide-coverage, probabilistic LFG grammatical and lexical resources for Chinese from the Penn Chinese Treebank (CTB) (Xue et al., 2002) based on an automatic f-structure annotation algorithm. Currently 96.751% of the CTB trees receive a single, covering and connected f-structure, 0.112% do not receive an f-structure due to feature clashes, while 3.137% are associated with multiple f-structure fragments. From the f-structure-annotated CTB we extract a total of 12975 lexical entries with 20 distinct subcategorisation frame types. Of these 3436 are verbal entries with a total of 11 different frame types. We extract a number of PCFG-based LFG approximations. Currently our best automatically induced grammars achieve an f-score of 81.57% against the trees in unseen articles 301-325; 86.06% f-score (all grammatical functions) and 73.98% (preds-only) against the dependencies derived from the f-structures automatically generated for the original trees in 301-325 and 82.79% (all grammatical functions) and 67.74% (preds-only) against the dependencies derived from the manually annotated gold-standard f-structures for 50 trees randomly selected from articles 301-325
Envisioning a McGill University lifelong learning and living (L4) community
Lifelong learning and cognitive resilience are integral to a changing 21st century education paradigm for learners of all ages, as they are for health and well being of the individual student and wider community. Neuroscience in particular is continually making inroads on the impact that learning has on the brain and the interrelationships between body and mind that help to maintain physical and intellectual capacity over a lifetime. There is a long-standing community dedicated to sustainable lifelong learning on campus, the McGill Community for Lifelong Learning (MCLL). There are also worldwide efforts underway to promote lifelong learning in the context of age friendly cities under the auspices of UNESCO and the World Health Organization. Moreover, the international network of Age Friendly Universities, Lifelong Learning Institutes and over 200 University Based Retirement Communities (UBRCs) in the USA offer resources, guidelines, operating principles and research for building unique and innovative local responses to the changing demographics, increased cultural diversity and technological changes in education futures for learners in a given community. The poster will highlight national and international research initiatives and networks to enhance well-being and mental health through lifelong learning.Different L4 community options will be explored, building on MCLLâs peer learning experience over the past 27 years. It will reflect opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration with university and wider Montreal community stakeholders, including health care professionals, caregivers, and educators.The poster will demonstrate that a lifelong learning approach to whole person care has the potential to be transformative.

Quantitative Study of Unsaturated Transport of Glycerol through Aquaglyceroporin that has High Affinity for Glycerol
The structures of several aquaglyceroporins have been resolved to atomic resolution showing two or more glycerols bound inside a channel and confirming a glycerol-facilitatorâs affinity for its substrate glycerol. However, the kinetics data of glycerol transport experiments all point to unsaturated transport that is characteristic of low substrate affinity in terms of the Michaelis- Menten kinetics. In this article, we present an in silico-in vitro research focused on AQP3, one of the human aquaglyceroporins that is natively expressed in the abundantly available erythrocytes. We conducted 2.1 ÎŒs in silico simulations of AQP3 embedded in a model erythrocyte membrane with intracellular-extracellular asymmetries in leaflet lipid compositions and compartment salt ions. From the equilibrium molecular dynamics (MD), we elucidated the mechanism of glycerol transport at high substrate concentrations. From the steered MD simulations, we computed the Gibbs free-energy profile throughout the AQP3 channel. From the free energy profile, we quantified the kinetics of glycerol transport that is unsaturated due to glycerol-glycerol interaction mediated by AQP3 resulting in the concerted movement of two glycerol molecules for the transport of one glycerol molecule across the cell membrane. We conducted in vitro experiments on glycerol uptake into human erythrocytes for a wide range of substrate concentrations and various temperatures. The experimental data quantitatively validated our theoretical- computational conclusions on the unsaturated glycerol transport through AQP3 that has high affinity for glycerol
Fifty Percent Prevalence of Extracampine Hallucinations in Parkinsonâs Disease Patients
Extracampine hallucinations (EH), the sense of a presence or fleeting movement in the absence of an associated visual percept, have been reported in Parkinsonâs disease (PD) patients but their prevalence, characteristics and temporal relationship to visual hallucinations (VH) remain unclear. Given that VH are predictive of cognitive impairment in PD, improved understanding of EH may have significant prognostic implications. The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and characteristics of EH in a large unselected population with PD and to assess the temporal relationship between EH, VH and memory decline. Cross-sectional data were collected using a questionnaire circulated to 414 PD patients via an online patient community. Data were obtained regarding the occurrence, timing and characteristics of VH and EH and symptoms of PD, disease duration, disease severity and medication history. 50.4% of respondents reported EH and 15.5% reported VH. EH were typically experienced alongside, rather than behind, the individual (p<0.001) without clear lateralisation (p=0.438), and were more likely to be of unfamiliar presences (p<0.001). The occurrence of EH was associated with Hoehn and Yahr score (p=0.002) but not disease duration (p=0.158). EH onset was associated with VH onset (p=0.046) and occurred after the onset of anosmia (p<0.001), cognitive decline (p=0.002) and sleep disturbance (p=0.002). The reported prevalence of EH in PD patients was threefold greater than that of VH, with similar timings of onset, suggesting that EH are under-recognised and under-reported. Further work is needed to determine whether EH are predictive of cognitive decline
