    Urban environmental health applications of remote sensing

    An urban area was studied through the use of the inventory-by-surrogate method rather than by direct interpretation of photographic imagery. Prior uses of remote sensing in urban and public research are examined. The effects of crowding, poor housing conditions, air pollution, and street conditions on public health are considered. Color infrared photography was used to categorize land use features and the grid method was used in photo interpretation analysis. The incidence of shigella and salmonella, hepatitis, meningitis, tuberculosis, myocardial infarction and veneral disease were studied, together with mortality and morbidity rates. Sample census data were randomly collected and validated. The hypothesis that land use and residential quality are associated with and act as an influence upon health and physical well-being was studied and confirmed

    Health and its association with the physical environment was studied based on the hypothesis that there is a relationship between the man-made physical environment and health status of a population. The statistical technique of regression analysis was employed to show the degree of association and aspects of physical environment which accounted for the greater variation in health status. Mortality, venereal disease, tuberculosis, hepatitis, meningitis, shigella/salmonella, hypertension and cardiac arrest/myocardial infarction were examined. The statistical techniques were used to measure association and variation, not necessarily cause and effect. Conclusions drawn show that the association still exists in the decade of the 1970's and that it can be successfully monitored with the methodology of remote sensing

    Stability of Glutamate-Aspartate Cardioplegia Additive Solution in Polyolefin IV Bags

    Objective: Glutamate-aspartate cardioplegia additive solution (GACAS) is used to enhance myocardial preservation and left ventricular function during some cardiac surgeries. This study was designed to evaluate the stability of compounded GACAS stored in sterile polyolefin intravenous (IV) bags. The goal is to extend the default USP beyond-use date (BUD) and reduce unnecessary inventory waste. Methods: GACAS was compounded and packaged in sterile polyolefin 250 mL IV bags. The concentration was 232 mM for each amino acid. The samples were stored under refrigeration (2°C-8°C) and analyzed at 0, 1, and 2 months. At each time point, the samples were evaluated by pH measurement and visual inspection for color, clarity, and particulates. The samples were also analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for potency and degradation products. Due to the lack of ultraviolet (UV) chromophores of glutamate and aspartate, the samples were derivatized by ortho-phthalaldehyde prior to HPLC analysis. Results: The time zero samples of GACAS passed the physical, chemical, and microbiological tests. Over 2 months of storage, there was no significant change in pH or visual appearance for any of the stability samples. The HPLC results also indicated that the samples retained 101% to 103% of the label claim strengths for both amino acids. Conclusion: The physical and chemical stability of extemporaneously prepared GACAS has been confirmed for up to 2 months in polyolefin IV bags stored under refrigeration. With proper sterile compounding practice and microbiology testing, the BUD of this product can be extended to 2 months

    Electronic Raman scattering in Magnetite, Spin vs. Charge gap

    We report Raman scattering data of single crystals of magnetite (Fe3O4) with Verwey transition temperatures (Tv) of 123 and 117K, respectively. Both single crystals reveal broad electronic background extending up to 900 wavenumbers (~110 meV). Redistribution of this background is observed when samples are cooled below Tv. In particular, spectra of the low temperature phase show diminished background below 300 wavenumbers followed by an enhancement of the electronic background between 300 and 400 wavenumbers. To enhance the effect of this background redistribution we divide the spectra just below the transition by the spectra just above the transition. A resultant broad peak-like feature is observed, centered at 370 wavenumbers (45 meV). The peak position of this feature does not scale with the transition temperature. We discuss two alternative assignments of this feature to a spin or charge gap in magnetite.Comment: 4 figures, 1 tabl

    Effects of calcium channel blockers on coronary vasoconstriction induced by endothelin-1 in closed chest pigs

    AbstractThe purpose of this study was to determine the effects of endothelin-1 on the coronary vascular bed of closed chest pigs. Endothelin-1 (3 to 30 pmol/kg body weight) was selectively administered into the left anterior descending coronary artery. Coronary blood flow and epicardial vessel diameter were measured by quantitative arteriography. Arterial pressure increased after a 30 pmol/kg dose and heart rate was not changed.Coronary blood flow and vessel diameter of the left anterior descending artery significantly decreased by 74% and 32%, respectively (p < 0.01 versus control) after the 30 pmol/kg dose, whereas these variables modestly decreased in the left circumflex artery. Endothelin-1 in doses of 10 to 30 pmol/kg produced electrocardiographic ST segment elevation associated with decreased oxygen saturation of coronary sinus venous blood. Endothelin-induced coronary vasoconstriction was significantly inhibited after treatment with intravenous diltiazem (0.2 mg/kg, n = 6) or nifedipine (0.1 mg/kg, n = 5), but not after vehicle administration (n = 4).This study demonstrates that intracoronary administration of endothelin-1 causes significant myocardial ischemia through coronary vasoconstriction, which is inhibited by a calcium channel blocker. The data suggest that calcium influx into the smooth muscle cells appears to be involved at least in part in the mechanism of endothelin-induced coronary vasoconstriction in vivo

    Radiation-hard ASICs for optical data transmission in the ATLAS pixel detector

    We have developed two radiation-hard ASICs for optical data transmission in the ATLAS pixel detector at the LHC at CERN: a driver chip for a Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) diode for 80 Mbit/s data transmission from the detector, and a Bi-Phase Mark decoder chip to recover the control data and 40 MHz clock received optically by a PIN diode. We have successfully implemented both ASICs in 0.25 um CMOS technology using enclosed layout transistors and guard rings for increased radiation hardness.     Effect of savirin in the prevention of biofilm-related Staphylococcus aureus prosthetic joint infection

    Background: Most of the arthroplasty surgery failure due to prosthetic joint infections (PJI) is caused by biofilm-associated Staphylococcus aureus. In a recent experimental study, savirin has been used to prevent and treat S. aureus skin infections in animal models. We explored the application of savirin in a PJI mouse model to determine its utility as an adjunct therapy to prevent PJI. Materials and methods: The in-vitro antibacterial and antibiofilm activity of savirin, with or without antibiotics (cefazolin, rifampicin, and vancomycin), against S. aureus were investigated using broth microdilution and crystal violet staining method, respectively. The effect of savirin treatment on the expression of the key biofilm-related genes (icaA, icaD, eno, fib, ebps, and agr) in S. aureus was studied using quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (qRTPCR). The in-vivo efficacy of savirin alone and with cefazolin to prevent S. aureus PJI was determined using a clinically relevant PJI mouse model. Mice were randomized into five groups (n = 8/group): 1) infected K-wire savirin treated group, 2) infected K-wire cefazolin treated group, 3) infected K-wire savirin plus cefazolin treated group, 4) infected K-wire PBS treated group, 5) sterile K-wire group. Savirin was administered subcutaneously immediately post-surgery and intravenous cefazolin was given on day seven. Results: Savirin inhibited planktonic and biofilm in-vitro growth of S. aureus, showed enhanced inhibitory activity when combined with antibiotics, and down-regulated the expression of key S. aureus biofilm-related genes (icaA, icaD, eno, fib, ebps, and agr). Savirin significantly reduced bacterial counts on joint implants in comparison with the PBS treated control, while savirin plus cefazolin reduced bacterial counts on both implants and peri-prosthetic tissues. Conclusion: Savirin adjuvant therapy may prevent biofilm formation and S. aureus PJI. This study gives baseline data for using savirin for the prevention as well as treatment of S. aureus PJI in future animal studies
