The new outfit of Neusticemys neuquina: Holw recent findings and techniques helped clarify its phylogenetic affinities
Neusticemys neuquina is one of the two known turtles from the Upper Jurassic of the Vaca Muerta Formation. Since its initial description in 1988 its taxonomic affinities have been unstable because all known specimens are postcranial elements, which seem to lack phylogenetic relevance. Initially referred, putatively, to the genus Eurysternum, it has also been considered a protostegid or a basal cryptodire. Recently, the discovery and descriptions of three skulls (MOZ 064, MACN-PV 105, MHNSR-PV-1195) and their study using computed tomography helped establish it as a member of Thalassochelydia. The new skulls have in common with Thalassochelydia: the articular process of the quadrate posteriorly oriented; the presence of a prominent, ventrally infolding ridge of the posterior surface of the processus articularis of the quadrate; a long interpterygoid contact; the presence of a pterygoid contact with the articular surfaces of the quadrate; an anterolateral recess of the anterior surface of the quadrate lateral to the processus trochlearis oticum; the presence of a fossa on the supraoccipital-opisthotic-exoccipital contact area; the foramina anterius caroticus cerebralis close together but as independent foramina in the basisphenoid; and the presence of a splenial bone in the mandible. Some of the features that distinguish it from other Thalassochelydia are the presence of a depression on the ventral surface of the basisphenoid, a relatively larger foramen nervi trigemini and reduced and steepened triturating surfaces in both the mandible and maxilla. The mandibular morphology resembles that of Dermochelys coriacea rather than that of other thalassochelydians and panchelonioids, which might indicate similarities in the feeding preferences between these species. New research has shown that thalassochelydians might have been better adapted to marine environments than previously thought and Neusticemys neuquina is not the exception.Fil: González Ruiz, Pablo. Reliability and measurement error of tensiomyography to assess mechanical muscle function: A systematic review
Interest in studying mechanical skeletal muscle function through tensiomyography (TMG) has increased in recent years. This systematic review aimed to (a) report the reliability and measurement error of all TMG parameters [i.e., maximum radial displacement of the muscle belly (Dm), contraction time (Tc), delay time (Td), half-relaxation time (1/2 Tr), and sustained contraction time (Ts)] and (b) to provide critical reflection on how to perform accurate and appropriate measurements for informing clinicians, exercise professionals, and researchers. A comprehensive literature search was performed of the Pubmed, Scopus, Science Direct and Cochrane databases up to July 2017. Eight studies were included in this systematic review. Meta-analysis could not be carried out due to the low quality of the evidence of some studies evaluated. Overall, the review of the nine studies involving 158 participants revealed high relative reliability [intra-class correlation (ICC)] for Dm (0.91-0.99); moderate to high ICC for Ts (0.80-0.96), Tc (0.70-0.98), and 1/2 Tr (0.77-0.93); and low to high ICC for Td (0.60-0.98), independently of the evaluated muscles. Additionally, absolute reliability [coefficient of variation (CV)] was low for all TMG parameters except for 1/2 Tr (CV = >20%) while measurement error indexes were high for this parameter. In conclusion, this study indicates that three of the TMG parameters (Dm, Td and Tc) are highly reliable, whereas 1/2 Tr demonstrate insufficient reliability, and thus should not be used in future studies
A Cubic Mg2MnO4 Cathode for non-aqueous Magnesium Batteries
The feasibility of cubic Mg2MnO4 (c-Mg2MnO4) cathode for rechargeable magnesium batteries is scrutinized by both theoretical and experimental methods. To exploit the high valence state of Mn4+ upon magnesium insertion in c-Mg2MnO4, we substituted Mn3+ (0.645 Å) by the larger Mg2+ (0.72 Å) and studied a series of Mg1+yMn3+2-2yMn4+yO4. The results prove that this Mg/Mn substitution results in a progressive increase of the unit cell parameter “a” due to the increasement in the average oxidation of Mn. We also distinguish the importance of having Mn(IV) in c-Mg2MnO4 vs. the known Mn(III) in tetragonal MgMn2O4 (t-MgMn2O4). The geometry optimization and energy calculations on the c-Mg2MnO4 system are carried out within the density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicating the Mg insertion occurs at 2.23 V with a volume expansion of ca. 8.7 %. Galvanostatic curves revealed a two-step profile with an average voltage of 2.1 V and 160 mA h g−1 (0.5 Mg2+)
Fluctuations in phenolic content, ascorbic acid and total carotenoids and antioxidant activity of fruit beverages during storage
Stability of the total phenolic content, ascorbic acid, total carotenoids and antioxidant activity in eight fruit beverages was analyzed. The influence of storage
temperature (4, 8 and 11 °C) during the product shelf-life (20 days) was evaluated. Pomegranate Juice presented the highest values for antioxidant activity by DPPH•
assay (552.93 ± 6.00 GAE μg mL−1), total carotenoids (3.18 ± 0.11 βCE μgmL−1), and total phenolic content (3967.07 ± 2.47 GAE μg mL−1); while Splash Blend recorded the highest levels of ascorbic acid (607.39 ± 2.13 AAE μg mL−1). The antioxidant capacity was stable at 4 and 8 °C for the first 8 days of storage; while carotenoids and ascorbic acid were slightly degraded through the storage
time, possibly due to oxidation and/or reactions with other compounds. The results suggest that the observed variation during testing could be related to storage
conditions of the final product
Text prediction recurrent neural networks using long shortterm memory-dropout
"Unit short-term memory (LSTM) is a type of recurrent neural network (RNN)
whose sequence-based models are being used in text generation and/or
prediction tasks, question answering, and classification systems due to their
ability to learn long-term dependencies. The present research integrates the
LSTM network and dropout technique to generate a text from a corpus as
input, a model is developed to find the best way to extract the words from the
context. For training the model, the poem ""La Ciudad y los perros"" which is
composed of 128,600 words is used as input data. The poem was divided into
two data sets, 38.88% for training and the remaining 61.12% for testing the
model. The proposed model was tested in two variants: word importance and
context. The results were evaluated in terms of the semantic proximity of the
generated text to the given context.
Flavonoids: Important Biocompounds in Food
Flavonoids are secondary metabolites in plants that show some desirable characteristics. These compounds can be grouped in different classes on the basis of their basic structure. It has been reported that flavonoids are important for human health because of their antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, and anti‐inflammatory activities and because they act as free radical scavengers as they are potential reducing agents that protect from oxidative damage, which are conferred by the content of hydroxyl groups. In recent years, flavonoids have been investigated based on their ability to reduce the incidence of many diseases, to inhibit cell damage, to repair DNA process and to reduce oxidative stress. Besides, flavonoids have been demonstrated to have cardioprotective effects, have potential to improve coronary vasodilatation and prevent LDLs from oxidizing and also showed potential neuroprotective effects. Moreover, flavonoids have been used in the food industry due to their ability to preserve foods, to provide colour and flavour and to make dietary supplements, among other important industrial applications
