Tourmaline 40Ar/39Ar chronology of tourmaline-rich rocks from Central Iberia dates the main Variscan deformation phases
During crustal thickening, metapelites taken to depth release boron-bearing hydrothermal fluids because of progressive heating and dehydration. These fluids swiftly percolate upwards, especially if the crust is being actively deformed, to form tourmaline where the PT conditions and the chemical composition of the host-rock are favorable. The age of the so-formed tourmaline would record the age of the upward admittance of B-bearing fluids and, presumably, the age of the deformation. This process has been documented in the Martinamor Antiform of Central Iberia, a region where tourmaline-bearing rocks are particularly abundant. Metasomatic tourmaline from the Late Cambrian San Pelayo orthogneisses (zircon U-Pb age of 496 ± 5 Ma) yielded 40Ar/39Ar plateau ages at 370 ± 5 Ma and 342 ± 5 Ma. The first value represents the crystallization age of the tourmaline and is so far the most precise estimation of the age of crustal thickening in Central Iberia (D1). The second value reflects a partial loss of Ar caused by the second deformation phase (D2). Tourmaline from mylonitized and folded tourmalinites developed above D2 shear zones yield perturbed spectra with mean "plateau" ages of 347 ± 9 Ma and 342 ± 9 Ma which may represent either the resetting of older tourmaline or the formation of new tourmaline by focused boron metasomatism. After the metamorphic peak and simultaneously with the emplacement of the main granitoids of the Avila Batholith (310-315 Ma), another episode of boron metasomatism precipitated a new generation of tourmaline, which appears either concentrated in fine-layered tourmalinites (318 ± 2 Ma) or disseminated within Ediacaran-Cambrian metasediments (316 ± 2 Ma). The source of boron was the breakdown of previously formed tourmaline during melting reactions. Lastly, tourmaline from a leucogranitic body yielded a saddle-shaped age spectrum with a minimum age of ca. 296 Ma, roughly coeval with the youngest leucograni - tes. Although further work is required, our results suggest that tourmaline can be a useful chronological marker for dating deformation and magmatism
Development of a Telemetry and Yield-Mapping System of Olive Harvester
Sensors, communication systems and geo-reference units are required to achieve
an optimized management of agricultural inputs with respect to the economic and
environmental aspects of olive groves. In this study, three commercial olive harvesters
were tracked during two harvesting seasons in Spain and Chile using remote and autonomous
equipment that was developed to determine their time efficiency and effective based on
canopy shaking for fruit detachment. These harvesters work in intensive/high-density (HD)
and super-high-density (SHD) olive orchards. A GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System)
and GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) device was installed to track these
harvesters. The GNSS receiver did not affect the driver’s work schedule. Time elements
methodology was adapted to the remote data acquisition system. The effective field
capacity and field efficiency were investigated. In addition, the field shape, row length,
angle between headland alley and row, and row alley width were measured to determinate
the optimum orchard design parameters value. The SHD olive harvester showed significant
lower effective field capacity values when alley width was less than 4 m. In addition, a
yield monitor was developed and installed on a traditional olive harvester to obtain a yield
map from the harvested area. The hedge straddle harvester stood out for its highly effective
field capacity; nevertheless, a higher field efficiency was provided by a non-integral lateral canopy shaker. All of the measured orchard parameters have influenced machinery yields,
whether effective field capacity or field efficiency. A saving of 40% in effective field
capacity was achieved with a reduction from 4 m or higher to 3.5 m in alley width for SHD
olive harvester. A yield map was plotted using data that were acquired by a yield monitor,
reflecting the yield gradient in spite of the larger differences between tree yield
A multi-shot target-wheel assembly for high-repetition-rate, laser-driven proton acceleration
A multi-shot target assembly and automatic alignment procedure for
laser-plasma proton acceleration at high-repetition-rate are introduced. The
assembly is based on a multi-target rotating wheel capable of hosting 5000
targets, mounted on a three-dimensional motorised stage to allow rapid
replenishment and alignment of the target material between laser irradiations.
The automatic alignment procedure consists of a detailed mapping of the impact
positions at the target surface prior to the irradiation that ensures stable
operation of the target, which alongside the purpose-built design of the target
wheel, enable the operation at rates up to 10 Hz. Stable and continuous
laser-driven proton acceleration is demonstrated, with observed cut-off energy

Spread of the invasive alga Caulerpa racemosa var. cylindracea (Caulerpales, Chlorophyta) along the Mediterranean Coast of the Murcia region (SE Spain)
The aim of this paper was to document the appearance and spread of the green alga Caulerpa racemosa along the coast of Murcia in south–eastern Spain. It was found for the first time in the area in 2005 and over the next two years the number of new sightings increased almost exponentially. In the period 2005–2007 the total surface area colonised by the alga in the region was estimated to be at least 265 ha. Benthic assemblages colonised by the alga were rocky bottoms with photophilic algae, dead P. oceanica rhizomes, infralittoral and circalittoral soft bottoms and maerl beds. No penetration of the alga was observed in P. oceanica meadows, except in one locality. Biometric analysis indicated high vegetative development in the established colonies in comparison to those described in other Mediterranean areas. Rapid spreading dynamics observed in the Murcia region is a potential threat for native benthic communities.

El alga fue detectada por primera vez en el año 2005 y durante los dos años consecutivos se observó un crecimiento casi exponencial en el número de áreas colonizadas. La superficie total colonizada por el alga en Murcia durante el periodo 2005–2007 ha sido estimada en 265 ha., siendo las comunidades bentónicas afectadas algas fotófilas sobre sustrato rocoso, "mata muerta" de P. oceanica, fondos blandos infralitorales y circalitorales y fondos con comunidades de maërl. La presencia del alga dentro de praderas de P. oceanica solamente fue detectada en una localidad. Los estudios biométricos realizados muestran un elevado desarrollo vegetativo de las poblaciones de C. racemosa en Murcia en comparación con colonias de otras áreas del Mediterráneo, siendo esta rápida dinámica de expansión una amenaza potencial para las comunidades bentonicas nativas.

Evaluation of the Predictive Ability, Environmental Regulation and Pharmacogenetics Utility of a BMI-Predisposing Genetic Risk Score during Childhood and Puberty
The authors would like to thank the Spanish children and parents who participated in
the study.Polygenetic risk scores (pGRSs) consisting of adult body mass index (BMI) genetic
variants have been widely associated with obesity in children populations. The implication of
such obesity pGRSs in the development of cardio-metabolic alterations during childhood as well
as their utility for the clinical prediction of pubertal obesity outcomes has been barely investigated
otherwise. In the present study, we evaluated the utility of an adult BMI predisposing pGRS for the
prediction and pharmacological management of obesity in Spanish children, further investigating
its implication in the appearance of cardio-metabolic alterations. For that purpose, we counted
on genetics data from three well-characterized children populations (composed of 574, 96 and 124
individuals), following both cross-sectional and longitudinal designs, expanding childhood and
puberty. As a result, we demonstrated that the pGRS is strongly associated with childhood BMI
Z-Score (B = 1.56, SE = 0.27 and p-value = 1.90 × 10−8
), and that could be used as a good predictor of
obesity longitudinal trajectories during puberty. On the other hand, we showed that the pGRS is not
associated with cardio-metabolic comorbidities in children and that certain environmental factors
interact with the genetic predisposition to the disease. Finally, according to the results derived from a
weight-reduction metformin intervention in children with obesity, we discarded the utility of the

Matching microscopic and macroscopic responses in glasses
We first reproduce on the Janus and Janus II computers a milestone experiment
that measures the spin-glass coherence length through the lowering of
free-energy barriers induced by the Zeeman effect. Secondly we determine the
scaling behavior that allows a quantitative analysis of a new experiment
reported in the companion Letter [S. Guchhait and R. Orbach, Phys. Rev. Lett.
118, 157203 (2017)]. The value of the coherence length estimated through the
analysis of microscopic correlation functions turns out to be quantitatively
consistent with its measurement through macroscopic response functions.
Further, non-linear susceptibilities, recently measured in glass-forming
liquids, scale as powers of the same microscopic length.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
The Mpemba effect in spin glasses is a persistent memory effect
The Mpemba effect occurs when a hot system cools faster than an initially
colder one, when both are refrigerated in the same thermal reservoir. Using the
custom built supercomputer Janus II, we study the Mpemba effect in spin glasses
and show that it is a non-equilibrium process, governed by the coherence length
\xi of the system. The effect occurs when the bath temperature lies in the
glassy phase, but it is not necessary for the thermal protocol to cross the
critical temperature. In fact, the Mpemba effect follows from a strong
relationship between the internal energy and \xi that turns out to be a
sure-tell sign of being in the glassy phase. Thus, the Mpemba effect presents
itself as an intriguing new avenue for the experimental study of the coherence
