    Neural Network Based Min-Max Predictive Control. Application to a Heat Exchanger

Italy. 2001Min-max model predictive controllers (MMMPC) have been proposed for the control of linear plants subject to bounded uncertainties. The implementation of MMMPC suffers a large computational burden due to the numerical optimization problem that has to be solved at every sampling time. This fact severely limits the class of processes in which this control is suitable. In this paper the use of a Neural Network (NN) to approximate the solution of the min-max problem is proposed. The number of inputs of the NN is determined by the order and time delay of the model together with the control horizon. For large time delays the number of inputs can be prohibitive. A modification to the basic formulation is proposed in order to avoid this later problem. Simulation and experimental results are given using a heat exchanger

    Feedback control ideas for call center staffing

    European Control Conference 2009 • Budapest, Hungary, August 23–26, 2009Call centers are nowadays a widespread solution to deal with customer support and as platform for different kind of business. Call center staffing is crucial to provide adequate service levels at acceptable costs. The task is usually accomplished using heuristics with the help of a human experts or with some static offline optimization based on operations research. Simulators based on queue theory are in some cases also used. The aim of the paper is to show that call center staffing can be posed as a feedback control problem with the advantage of getting a higher level of automation, and a wealth of results from control theory that can help to obtain the best possible staffing. In the paper the authors briefly describe the working procedures of call centers and how the staffing is usually made. They propose a feedback controller that it is used with a call center simulator. The results show that good call center staffing can be obtained even with a not very sophisticated controller

    Analysis of strain localization with a nonlocal plasticity model

    In the present paper a nonlocal plasticity model is described, intended to reproduce the mechanical behaviour of stiff fine-grained soils, including the objective simulation of strain localization; the phenomenon of accumulation of deformations in narrow zones in the form of shear bands or fractures. A number of analyses have been performed to assess the developed formulation. Relevant aspects have been addressed such as the thickness of the shear band, its orientation, and the onset of localization in a boundary value problem (BVP). Results provide useful insigths into relevant aspects of the numerical simulation of strain localization

    Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Model Higgs Scenarios for Partially Universal GUT Scale Boundary Conditions

    We examine the extent to which it is possible to realize the NMSSM "ideal Higgs" models espoused in several papers by Gunion et al in the context of partially universal GUT scale boundary conditions. To this end we use the powerful methodology of nested sampling. We pay particular attention to whether ideal-Higgs-like points not only pass LEP constraints but are also acceptable in terms of the numerous constraints now available, including those from the Tevatron and BB-factory data, (g2)μ(g-2)_\mu and the relic density Ωh2\Omega h^2. In general for this particular methodology and range of parameters chosen, very few points corresponding to said previous studies were found, and those that were found were at best 2σ2\sigma away from the preferred relic density value. Instead, there exist a class of points, which combine a mostly singlet-like Higgs with a mostly singlino-like neutralino coannihilating with the lightest stau, that are able to effectively pass all implemented constraints in the region 80<mh<10080<m_h<100. It seems that the spin-independent direct detection cross section acts as a key discriminator between ideal Higgs points and the hard to detect singlino-like points.Comment: 22 pages, 15 figure

    Hybrid modeling of renewable energy systems and its application to a hot water solar plant

The methodology is used to model a solar plant for the production of sanitary water (the hot water production system installed at the “Hospital Universitario Virgen del Rocío”, Seville, Spain). A detailed examination of the behavior of the plant has produced a model which has served to identify niches of inefficiency in the operation.     Observational Δν\Delta\nu-ρˉ\bar\rho relation for δ\delta Sct stars using eclipsing binaries and space photometry

    Delta Scuti (δ\delta Sct) stars are intermediate-mass pulsators, whose intrinsic oscillations have been studied for decades. However, modelling their pulsations remains a real theoretical challenge, thereby even hampering the precise determination of global stellar parameters. In this work, we used space photometry observations of eclipsing binaries with a δ\delta Sct component to obtain reliable physical parameters and oscillation frequencies. Using that information, we derived an observational scaling relation between the stellar mean density and a frequency pattern in the oscillation spectrum. This pattern is analogous to the solar-like large separation but in the low order regime. We also show that this relation is independent of the rotation rate. These findings open the possibility of accurately characterizing this type of pulsator and validate the frequency pattern as a new observable for δ\delta Sct stars.Comment: 11 pages, including 2 pages of appendix, 2 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

    Is Arm software ecosystem ready for HPC?

    In recent years, the HPC community has increasingly grown its interest towards the Arm architecture with research projects targeting primarily the installation of Arm-based clusters. State of the art research project examples are the European Mont-Blanc, the Japanese Post-K, and the UKs GW4/EPSRC. Primarily attention is usually given to hardware platforms, and the Arm HPC community is growing as the hardware is evolving towards HPC workloads via solutions borrowed from mobile market e.g., big.LITTLE and additions such as Armv8-A Scalable Vector Extension (SVE) technology. However the availability of a mature software ecosystem and the possibility of running large and complex HPC applications plays a key role in the consolidation process of a new technology, especially in a conservative market like HPC. For this reason in this poster we present a preliminary evaluation of the Arm system software ecosystem, limited here to the Arm HPC Compiler and the Arm Performance Libraries, together with a porting and testing of three fairly complex HPC code suites: QuantumESPRESSO, WRF and FEniCS. The selection of these codes has not been totally random: they have been in fact proposed as HPC challenges during the last two editions of the Student Cluster Competition at ISC where all the authors have been involved operating an Arm-based cluster and awarded with the Fan Favorite award.The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Community's Seventh Framework Programme [FP7/2007-2013] and Horizon 2020 under the Mont-Blanc projects [3], grant agreements n. 288777, 610402 and 671697.     Homogenization of magnetoelastic heterogeneous solid bodies based on micropolar magnetoelasticity

    A variational-based homogenization method for magnetoelastic composite materials is established in a small strains framework. The existence of a non-symmetrical stress tensor motivates the elaboration of a homogenized Cosserat type magnetoelastic effective medium at the macroscale. Generic expressions of the effective magnetic and elastic properties are derived, showing the existence of couplings between the elastic and magnetic behaviors at the macrolevel. Applications of the developed homogenization methodology are done for periodic heterogeneous media prone to local bending at the scale of a few unit cells. The validation of the homogenized medium is performed by comparing its predictions versus those of fully resolved computations. The influence of the magnetic field intensity and orientation on the strength of micropolar effects is assessed.     Primary pleural myxoid liposarcoma: case report and literature review

    Myxoid liposarcoma is a histological subtype of malignant tumors within the group of sarcomas. It is more common in men between the ages of 40 and 50 years. Diagnosis is difficult because they are usually asymptomatic lesions, computed tomography (CT) scan and magnetic resonance are the studies of choice. The gold of treatment is surgical resection with free margins. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy have shown a good response. A 46-year-old male was detected incidental mediastinal lesion by radiography, CT scan showed a hypodense lesion in the right hemithorax that extended to the left hemithorax, infiltrating the diaphragm and large vessels. The patient underwent an exploratory thoracotomy, finding a multilobulated tumor and mucous content approximately 600 ml, adjacent structures were infiltrated, so complete resection was not possible. Subsequently, adjuvant chemotherapy given. The histopathological diagnosis was myxoid liposarcoma. Myxoid liposarcoma is a malignant lesion. The primary pleural origin is rare. Surgical resection with free margins has a good prognosis. Due to advanced disease, a complete resection in this case was not possible, that compromised the patient prognosis
