Maiden vs. monarch : the roles of Elizabeth I in contemporary depictions

English honors thesisPeople have been creating popular culture depictions of historical figures since forever. We, as a species, love telling stories, especially stories about people whose legacies have lasted for centuries. We create narratives centered on bygone people because we long for the past and enjoy delving into time periods we are not physically able to experience. When building these narratives, creators often manage to reflect their own time and culture in some way whether intentionally or not. They adhere to genre conventions and aim to please specific audiences. One historical figure whose story has been told and retold is Elizabeth I, the Queen of England from 1558 to 1603. Modern depictions of Elizabeth are used in part to simply tell the story of Elizabeth, but they are also used to reflect the wants and needs of specific modern audiences. Each pop culture version of Elizabeth is different and serves a different purpose. In this thesis, I analyze four different pop culture adaptations of the life of Elizabeth I and discuss how the creators of the works chose to present Elizabeth. The creators of each work had to choose which parts of Elizabeth's life they wanted to depict in order to create an overall image. The Elizabeth of each depiction reflects the creators' individual interpretations of her story, and each Elizabeth embodies a different role. Although each work is telling the story of the same woman, they all have very different ways of using Elizabeth as a character. In this thesis, I explore different adaptations and what they are trying to portray through the character of Elizabeth. Each piece I watched or read targets a different audience and falls into a different genre. In this paper I will discuss five Elizabeths: the actual Elizabeth I, the Elizabeth of Philippa Gregory's The Virgin's Lover (2004), the Elizabeth of the CW network's television show Reign (2013-2017), the Elizabeth of Shekhar Kapur's film Elizabeth (1998), and the Elizabeth of the British Broadcasting Corporation's The Virgin Queen (2005)

Catalytic Resilience Practices: Exploring the Effects of Resilience and Resilience Practices through Physical Exercise

    Get PDF
Resilience is of increasing interest to researchers and practitioners as the organizations where they work have become increasingly complex and dynamic. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has only magnified its importance. COVID-19 provides a unique opportunity to study how people navigate challenges and face adversity to be resilient both at home and at work. The main question organizations, teams, and employees are asking is how individuals gain and sustain resilience. To that end, theory and research has suggested a vast array of practices or strategies that individuals can engage in to build resilience to be better prepared to overcome adverse situations or challenges. However, the number of practices can be overwhelming and determining which practices should take precedence is unclear. The purpose of this study is to investigate a subset of the most promising resilience practices (i.e., physical exercise, sleep, active coping, growth reframing, use of social support, and applied mindfulness) to determine which are most likely to act as catalysts for other practices and ultimately be related to higher resilience. Growth reframing, exercise, and active coping were shown to be significant catalysts for other resilience practices strengthening the spillover model

The Canonical Quadratic Pair on Clifford Algebras over Schemes

Working over an arbitrary base scheme SS, we define the canonical quadratic pair on the Clifford algebra associated to an Azumaya algebra with quadratic pair. Given an Azumaya algebra A\mathcal{A} with quadratic pair, i.e., with an orthogonal involution and a semi-trace, its associated Clifford algebra's canonical involution is only orthogonal in certain cases, namely when deg(A)\mathrm{deg}(\mathcal{A}) is divisible by 88 or when both 2=02=0 over SS and deg(A)\mathrm{deg}(\mathcal{A}) is divisible by 44. When deg(A)≥8\mathrm{deg}(\mathcal{A}) \geq 8, our definition of the canonical quadratic pair on the Clifford algebra is extended from previous work of Dolphin and Qu\'eguiner-Mathieu, who worked over fields of characteristic 22. When deg(A)=4\mathrm{deg}(\mathcal{A})=4, we show that no canonical quadratic pair exists.Comment: 24 page

Christian Feminist Theology in Global Context

Rosemary Radford Ruether\u27s lecture calls white Christian feminists to be mindful of their single-issue western... critique is false and dangerous. The rich diversities of women\u27s experience demand a diversity of issues, priorities and tactics. It is, as Professor Ruether reminds us, in the dialogue of western Christian women with third world Christian women, that white western feminism becomes clearly one feminism among others, rather than...\u27feminism as such.\u2

Study protocol: addressing evidence and context to facilitate transfer and uptake of consultation recording use in oncology: a knowledge translation implementation study

    Get PDF
Background: The time period from diagnosis to the end of treatment is challenging for newly diagnosed cancer patients. Patients have a substantial need for information, decision aids, and psychosocial support. Recordings of initial oncology consultations improve information recall, reduce anxiety, enhance patient satisfaction with communication, and increase patients' perceptions that the essential aspects of their disease and treatment have been addressed during the consultation. Despite the research evidence supporting the provision of consultation recordings, uptake of this intervention into oncology practice has been slow. The primary aim of this project is to conduct an implementation study to explicate the contextual factors, including use of evidence, that facilitate and impede the transfer and uptake of consultation-recording use in a sample of patients newly diagnosed with breast or prostate cancer. Methods: Sixteen oncologists from cancer centres in three Canadian cities will participate in this three-phase study. The preimplementation phase will be used to identify and address those factors that are fundamental to facilitating the smooth adoption and delivery of the intervention during the implementation phase. During the implementation phase, breast and prostate cancer patients will receive a recording of their initial oncology consultation to take home. Patient interviews will be conducted in the days following the consultation to gather feedback on the benefits of the intervention. Patients will complete the Digital Recording Use Semi-Structured Interview (DRUSSI) and be invited to participate in focus groups in which their experiences with the consultation recording will be explored. Oncologists will receive a summary letter detailing the benefits voiced by their patients. The postimplementation phase includes a conceptual framework development meeting and a seven-point dissemination strategy. Discussion: Consultation recording has been used in oncology, family medicine, and other medicine specialties, and despite affirming evidence and probable applications to a large number of diseases and a variety of clinical contexts, clinical adoption of this intervention has been slow. The proposed study findings will advance our conceptual knowledge of the ways to enhance uptake of consultation recordings in oncology

Azumaya Algebras and Obstructions to Quadratic Pairs over a Scheme

We investigate quadratic pairs for Azumaya algebras with involutions over a base scheme S as defined by Calm{\`e}s and Fasel, generalizing the case of quadratic pairs on central simple algebras over a field (Knus, Merkurjev, Rost, Tignol). We describe a cohomological obstruction for an Azumaya algebra over S with orthogonal involution to admit a quadratic pair. When S is affine this obstruction vanishes, however it is non-trivial in general. In particular, we construct explicit examples with non-trivial obstructions.Comment: The title change

Barriers to Teachers\u27 Use of Environmentally-Based Education in Outdoor Classrooms

Numerous research studies have shown that when teachers take children outdoors to learn, children show an increase in cognitive, physical, social, and emotional skills. Few researchers have focused, however, on teachers and their decision to use the outdoors as a way of teaching. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore whether life experiences impact a teacher\u27s choice to not use the outdoor environment. Ham and Shuman\u27s model of environmental education commitment and Kaplan and Kaplan\u27s environmental cognition theory served as the conceptual frameworks for this study. The research question was designed to explore the experiences and barriers of teachers and how these experiences and barriers affected a teacher\u27s decision to use or not use an outdoor classroom when one was available. Data were obtained using individual interviews of a purposeful sample of seven elementary teachers from a large school district in the U.S. state of Georgia who were not using outdoor classrooms at the time of the study. Themes that emerged from data analysis were lack of time in tightly controlled class schedules, lack of administrator support, lack of staff development for teachers, weather, and lack of time to research and prepare lessons. Study findings have the potential to engender positive social change by increasing insight about the barriers teachers perceive to using the natural environment in instruction. With more knowledge about such barriers, administrators may able to encourage teachers to use the natural environment as an extension of the indoor classroom to increase academic achievement and lifelong behaviors in nature among students
