The municipalities are responsible for Wastwater management and decide, which technologies and organizations to be realized. Refusals to accept certain contaminations, additional fees on highly loaded wastewaters and specific stormwater fees are tools that have been set towards a sustainable water management. The big number of complicated water regulations by state and the federal government cause effects disturbing each other. A selected deregulation seems necessary. Shock effects by simultaneous ultrasonic and salt water treatment have been studied for reduction of bacteria concentration in biologically purified waste water. Ultrasonic treatment was carried out at 206, 352, 618 and 1.042 MHz in the ultrasound reactor URS 1000. Investigated bacteria are Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, Enterobacter cloacae and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Sterilization started only at hard cavitation which occurred after a 10 - 50 min starting phase in the ultrasonic treatment. Sterilization strongly depends on the frequency with an optimum at 352 MHz. Deviation of water salt concentration from physiological salt concentration results in a synergistic treatment effect. Chemical side reactions include nitrate formation and a pH decrease. Side reactions and energy consumption require additional investigations to make the combined ultrasonic/chemical treatment a competitive process of water sterilization. A pilot-scale plant (3 m"3/h) was used for the disinfection of different wastewaters with UV-light and ozone and the combination of both techniques. Together with further experiments with mobile and stationary laboratory plants 3 different wastewaters were treated with ozone and 7 with UV resp.. The main results are: significantly different doses were found to be necessary for the disinfection of the treated wastewaters to reach the desired reduction of indicator microorganism, a filtration before disinfection improves the disinfection efficiency but is not necessary to fulfill the EC-guideline for bathing water in the secondary effluent, ozone induces strong changes concerning the parameters COD, BOD, TOC, DOC, NO_2 and NO_3, after UV-irradiation and ozonation the total bacterial count and pseudomonades show a fast and strong regrowth (within 24 to 72 hours) reaching the same density as before disinfection. Fecal and total coliform and fecal streptococci do not show this effect, the examination of the antibiotic resistence pattern of wastewater bacteria did not show any selection of multiresistent species. Neither UV-light nor ozone induces the formation of mutagenic compounds. After ozonation an increase of toxicity (measured with the bactrial luminescence test) was found in a wastewater with a high level of industrial wastes, before planning and operation of a full-scale wastewater disinfection plant the disinfection efficiency should be checked in pilot-scale experiments to determine the required dose and (for ozonation) to exclude possibly side effects like toxicity and mutagenicity, the costs for UV-irradiation can be estimated with 0,05-0,15 DM/m"3, for ozonation with 0,16-0,39 DM/m"3.
