    Refined class number formulas and Kolyvagin systems

    We use the theory of Kolyvagin systems to prove (most of) a refined class number formula conjectured by Darmon. We show that for every odd prime pp, each side of Darmon's conjectured formula (indexed by positive integers nn) is "almost" a pp-adic Kolyvagin system as nn varies. Using the fact that the space of Kolyvagin systems is free of rank one over Zp\mathbf{Z}_p, we show that Darmon's formula for arbitrary nn follows from the case n=1n=1, which in turn follows from classical formulas

    The lower dimensional Busemann-Petty problem asks, whether n-dimensional centrally symmetric convex bodies with smaller i-dimensional central sections necessarily have smaller volumes. The paper contains a complete solution to the problem when the body with smaller sections is invariant under rotations, preserving mutually orthogonal coordinate subspaces of fixed dimension. The argument relies on the notion of canonical angles between subspaces, spherical Radon transforms, properties of intersection bodies, and the generalized cosine transforms.Comment: 18 page
