STATE GOVERNMENT OneGeorgia Authority: Create State Authority To Enhance Rural Development

    Get PDF
The Act, establishing the OneGeorgia Authority (Authority), provides public funding for rural economic development. The Act provides for the creation of the Authority, delineating the makeup of the board and the powers of the Governor and others to appoint board members and the Director of the Authority. Primary funding, to be approved by the General Assembly each year, will be provided through the state\u27s settlement of tobacco litigation. The Act also allows the Authority to issue bonds, not subject to the Georgia Securities Act of 1975. Funding will be used for infrastructure and other projects designed to attract business to rural Georgia. The Act also establishes the OneGeorgia Authority Overview Committee

The Ladies’ Land League and Irish-American Identity in the American South

The Ladies’ Land League played an important role in the Land War in the 1880s and was a historically important instance of Irish women’s political action. Anna Parnell and others galvanized women in both Ireland and the United States over land reform issues. This paper examines the evidence of the Ladies’ Land League actions in the historic Georgia newspapers in an effort to better understand the roles of print capitalism and the development of Southern Irish-American identity

Christian Allegories and Social Change in Southern Literature: A Comparative Study of Mason Tarwater and Atticus Finch in Flannery O\u27Connor\u27s The Violent Bear It Away and Harper Lee\u27s To Kill a Mockingbird

This thesis compares Mason Tarwater of Flannery O’Connor’s The Violent Bear It Away and Atticus Finch of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird to better understand how each author comments on Christian allegories and social change within their novels. This thesis argues that To Kill a Mockingbird promotes social change through the Christian values of good Samaritanism, nonviolence, and inclusion, while The Violent Bear It Away promotes a problematic Christian message. This thesis identifies how both novels utilize religious allegory. In O’Connor’s novel, the paradoxical and violent prophet figure, Mason Tarwater, uses violence and division to evoke change, while in Lee’s novel, Atticus Finch uses nonviolence and inclusion to impact others in his society. I argue that the comparison of these two protagonists suggests that nonviolence and inclusion are more successful in evoking meaningful social change, as opposed to using tactics of violence and division

Expressive Writing as an Intervention for Math Anxiety in Middle School Students

    Get PDF
Math anxiety is a serious concern for educators and students. Students who may otherwise be successful can find themselves incapacitated to think and perform to their abilities due to this issue. Math anxiety negatively affects academic performance and deters students from pursuing math-based careers. This is particularly true for female students. Effective interventions are needed to address these issues. Expressive writing is one such intervention that has shown promise in reducing math anxiety with older students. This study investigated the impact of expressive writing on the math anxiety levels of middle school students according to group and gender. An experimental, pretest-posttest, control group design with random assignment was used for a sample of 40 students from a public middle school in East Texas. The Modified Abbreviated Math Anxiety Scale was administered as a pretest and posttest. Students were randomly placed into either the control or treatment group. Both groups completed journal entries each day. The treatment group also responded to a daily expressive writing prompt. The study was conducted over a two-week period. One-way ANCOVAs for data analysis found no significant differences according to group or gender. Results and their implications are discussed, and future research recommendations provided

2009 Summer.Covers not scanned.Includes bibliographical references.Print version deaccessioned 2022.Numerical sediment transport models are widely used to evaluate impacts of water management activities on endangered species, to identify appropriate strategies for dam removal, and many other applications. The SRH-1D (Sedimentation and River Hydraulics - One Dimension) numerical model, formerly known as GST ARS, is used by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation for many such evaluations. The predictions from models such as SRH-1D include uncertainty due to assumptions embedded in the model 's mathematical structure, uncertainty in the values of parameters, and various other sources. In this paper, we aim to develop a method that quantifies the degree to which parameter values are constrained by calibration data and determines the impacts of the remaining parameter uncertainty on model forecasts. Ultimately, this method could be used to assess how well calibration exercises have constrained model behavior and to identify data collection strategies that improve parameter certainty. The method uses a new multi-objective version of Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE). In this approach, the likelihoods of parameter values are assessed using a function that weights different output variables using their first order global sensitivities, which are obtained from the Fourier Amplitude Sensitivity Test (FAST). The method is applied to SRH-1D models of two flume experiments: an erosional case described by Ashida and Michiue (1971) and a depositional case described by Seal et al. (1997). Overall, the results suggest that the sensitivities of the model outputs to the parameters can be rather different for erosional and depositional cases and that the outputs in the depositional case can be sensitive to more parameters. The results also suggest that the form of the likelihood function can have a significant impact on the assessment of parameter uncertainty and its implications for the uncertainty of model forecasts

Know Thy Audience: Helping Students Engage a Threshold Concept Using Audience-Based Pedagogy

    Get PDF
Students are experts at sizing up instructors, but many do not extend this analysis to non-instructor audiences, which can reduce their effectiveness in new communication situations. Audience, therefore, is a crucial threshold concept not only in Rhetoric and Composition, but in any discipline that values communication skills. How can instructors help students develop a deeper understanding of audience in the disciplines and begin to cross the threshold? In this article, I describe how a group of Professional Writing and Rhetoric students engaged the audience threshold through a semester-long, client-based project. Drawing on data collected via reflections and portfolios, written deliverables, client feedback, and instructor notes, analysis shows the students were initially overconfident in their ability to assess audiences, worked through valid emotional responses to substantive client feedback, and learned to negotiate the dynamics of multiple audiences more carefully over the course of the semester
