Landau theory of charge and spin ordering in the nickelates

Guided by experiment and band structure, we introduce and study a phenomenological Landau theory for the unusual charge and spin ordering associated with the Mott transition in the perovskite nickelates, with chemical formula RNiO3_3, where R=Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Ho, Y, and Lu. While the Landau theory has general applicability, we show that for the most conducting materials, R=Pr, Nd, both types of order can be understood in terms of a nearly-nested spin density wave. Furthermore, we argue that in this regime, the charge ordering is reliant upon the orthorhombic symmetry of the sample, and therefore proportional to the magnitude of the orthorhombic distortion. The first order nature of the phase transitions is also explained. We briefly show by example how the theory is readily adapted to modified geometries such as nickelate films.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

Wave dynamics of a six-dimensional black hole localized on a tensional three-brane

We study the quasinormal modes and the late-time tail behavior of scalar perturbation in the background of a black hole localized on a tensional three-brane in a world with two large extra dimensions. We find that finite brane tension modifies the standard results in the wave dynamics for the case of a black hole on a brane with completely negligible tension. We argue that the wave dynamics contains the imprint of the extra dimensions.Comment: revised version, 10 pages, 1 table and 2 figures. Accepted for publication in Phys. Lett.

Improved Successive Cancellation Decoding of Polar Codes

As improved versions of successive cancellation (SC) decoding algorithm, successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding and successive cancellation stack (SCS) decoding are used to improve the finite-length performance of polar codes. Unified descriptions of SC, SCL and SCS decoding algorithms are given as path searching procedures on the code tree of polar codes. Combining the ideas of SCL and SCS, a new decoding algorithm named successive cancellation hybrid (SCH) is proposed, which can achieve a better trade-off between computational complexity and space complexity. Further, to reduce the complexity, a pruning technique is proposed to avoid unnecessary path searching operations. Performance and complexity analysis based on simulations show that, with proper configurations, all the three improved successive cancellation (ISC) decoding algorithms can have a performance very close to that of maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding with acceptable complexity. Moreover, with the help of the proposed pruning technique, the complexities of ISC decoders can be very close to that of SC decoder in the moderate and high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime.Comment: This paper is modified and submitted to IEEE Transactions on Communication

Energy pathways and structures of oceanic eddies from the ECCO2 state estimate and simplified models

Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution February 2013Studying oceanic eddies is important for understanding and predicting ocean circulation and climate variability. The central focus of this dissertation is the energy exchange between eddies and mean flow and banded structures in the low-frequency component of the eddy field. A combination of a realistic eddy-permitting ocean state estimate and simplified theoretical models is used to address the following specific questions. (1) What are the major spatial characteristics of eddy-mean flow interaction from an energy perspective? Is eddy-mean flow interaction a local process in most ocean regions? (2) The banded structures in the low-frequency eddy field are termed striations. How much oceanic variability is associated with striations? How does the time-mean circulation, for example a subtropical gyre or constant mean flow, influence the origin and characteristics of striations? How much do striations contribute to the energy budget and tracer mixing? This research was supported by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration contracts NNX09AI87G and NNX08AR33G
