Rose is one of the most popular and ancient plants in the history of decorative gardening. Curly roses are considered to be an indispensable component in vertical landscaping due to the decorative characteristics of their flowers and the ability of shoots to grow intensively in the vertical direction. The study of the historical stages of introduction and cultivation of plants allows analysing the main trends in the formation of culture, identifying a promising gene pool for further introductory and selection processes and avoiding negative consequences, due to the centuries-old experience of the Rosa L genus culture. The authors have presented some results of an analytical analysis of literature sources, electronic resources, and archival materials on the historical aspects of the introduction of climbing roses in Ukraine. The main stages of the introductory process are shown; the main botanical institutions that contributed to the expansion of the gene pool of climbing roses are noted. According to available literary data, we have revealed that the main centres for the introduction of climbing roses in Ukraine were and still remain the National Botanical Garden, N. N. Grishko NAS of Ukraine (Kyiv), arboretum "Alexandria" (Belaya Tserkov) and Nikitskyi Botanical Garden in the Crimea. Their activity also helped to save a significant number of species and varieties and assisted to the study of both biological and ecological features of roses. We should note that private farms have made a significant contribution to the enrichment of the assortment and the spread of climbing roses along with botanical gardens and arboretums. The value of personalities in the native introduction of roses is reflected. In particular, the achievements of such Ukrainian scientists as M. A. Gartvis, Z. K. Klimenko, N. M. Tymoshenko, E. L. Rubtsova and others should be noted.

Attachment of Motile Bacterial Cells to Prealigned Holed Microarrays

    Get PDF
Construction of biomotors is an exciting area of scientific research that holds great promise for the development of new technologies with broad potential applications in areas such as the energy industry and medicine. Herein, we demonstrate the fabrication of prealigned microarrays of motile Escherichia coli bacterial cells on SiOx substrates. To prepare these arrays, holed surfaces with a gold layer on the bottom of the holes were utilized. The attachment of bacteria to the holes was achieved via nonspecific interactions using poly-l-lysine hydrobromide (PLL). Our data suggest that a single motile bacterial cell can be selectively attached to an individual hole on a surface and bacterial cell binding can be controlled by altering the pH, with the greatest occupancy occurring at pH 7.8. Cells attached to hole arrays remained motile for at least 4 h. These data indicate that holed surface structures provide a promising footprint for the attachment of motile bacterial cells to form high-density site-specific functional bacterial microarrays

Au-Ag template stripped pattern for scanning probe investigations of DNA arrays produced by Dip Pen Nanolithography

We report on DNA arrays produced by Dip Pen Nanolithography (DPN) on a novel Au-Ag micro patterned template stripped surface. DNA arrays have been investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) showing that the patterned template stripped substrate enables easy retrieval of the DPN-functionalized zone with a standard optical microscope permitting a multi-instrument and multi-technique local detection and analysis. Moreover the smooth surface of the Au squares (abput 5-10 angstrom roughness) allows to be sensitive to the hybridization of the oligonucleotide array with label-free target DNA. Our Au-Ag substrates, combining the retrieving capabilities of the patterned surface with the smoothness of the template stripped technique, are candidates for the investigation of DPN nanostructures and for the development of label free detection methods for DNA nanoarrays based on the use of scanning probes.Comment: Langmuir (accepted

Differential attraction and repulsion of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa on molecularly smooth titanium films

Magnetron sputtering techniques were used to prepare molecularly smooth titanium thin films possessing an average roughness between 0.18 nm and 0.52 nm over 5 μm × 5 μm AFM scanning areas. Films with an average roughness of 0.52 nm or lower were found to restrict the extent of P. aeruginosa cell attachment, with less than 0.5% of all available cells being retained on the surface. The attachment of S. aureus cells was also limited on films with an average surface roughness of 0.52 nm, however they exhibited a remarkable propensity for attachment on the nano-smoother 0.18 nm average surface roughness films, with the attachment density being almost twice as great as that observed on the nano-rougher film. The difference in attachment behaviour can be attributed to the difference in morphology of the rod-shaped P. aeruginosa compared to the spherical S. aureus cells

    Dip-pen patterning of poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) chain-conformation-based nano-photonic elements

Metamaterials are a promising new class of materials, in which sub-wavelength physical structures, rather than variations in chemical composition, can be used to modify the nature of their interaction with electromagnetic radiation. Here we show that a metamaterials approach, using a discrete physical geometry (conformation) of the segments of a polymer chain as the vector for a substantial refractive index change, can be used to enable visible wavelength, conjugated polymer photonic elements. In particular, we demonstrate that a novel form of dip-pen nanolithography provides an effective means to pattern the so-called β-phase conformation in poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) thin films. This can be done on length scales ≤500 nm, as required to fabricate a variety of such elements, two of which are theoretically modelled using complex photonic dispersion calculations
