Questions surrounding queer subjectivity—including shame, the closet, and celebration—are at the core of my interests as a painter and image maker. Mining the history of religious iconography, including annunciation paintings, scenes of the crucifixion, and other notable works of this ilk, my paintings seek to explore the intricacies of sexuality and the workings of shame and celebration at play in the life of the queer-identified

{\AA}ngstr\"om-resolved Interfacial Structure in Organic-Inorganic Junctions

    Get PDF
Charge transport processes at interfaces which are governed by complex interfacial electronic structure play a crucial role in catalytic reactions, energy storage, photovoltaics, and many biological processes. Here, the first soft X-ray second harmonic generation (SXR-SHG) interfacial spectrum of a buried interface (boron/Parylene-N) is reported. SXR-SHG shows distinct spectral features that are not observed in X-ray absorption spectra, demonstrating its extraordinary interfacial sensitivity. Comparison to electronic structure calculations indicates a boron-organic separation distance of 1.9 {\AA}, wherein changes as small as 0.1 {\AA} result in easily detectable SXR-SHG spectral shifts (ca. 100s of meV). As SXR-SHG is inherently ultrafast and sensitive to individual atomic layers, it creates the possibility to study a variety of interfacial processes, e.g. catalysis, with ultrafast time resolution and bond specificity.Comment: 19 page

EVALUATION OF ULTRA-HIGH PERFORMANCE CONCRETE, FIBER REINFORCED SELF-CONSOLIDATING CONCRETE, AND MALP CONCRETE FOR PRESTRESSED GIRDER REPAIR (FHWA-OK-21-03)

    Get PDF
Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC), fiber-reinforced self-consolidating concrete, and magnesium alumino-liquid-phosphate (MALP) concrete all have significant potential for use in bridge repair in Oklahoma. The project described in this report examined the use of these materials in repairs of prestressed concrete girder continuity connections and beam end regions including both experimental testing and field implementation. Bond between the repair materials and conventional concrete and corrosion behavior were examined for each repair material. Twelve composite beam and continuity joint specimens were damaged and repaired using FR-SCC, MALP concrete, and UHPC. All repair materials restored capacity of the joints. Six girder specimens were loaded to failure in shear and repaired using FR-SCC, MALP concrete, and UHPC. Repaired specimens exhibited similar performance for all three repair materials and measured capacities exceeded those for the original beams in all cases. The soffit of the bridge deck cantilevers on the S.H. 3 bridge over Fulton Creek in Beaver County, Oklahoma was repaired using pneumatically placed MALP mortar and the repairs were monitored over time. Some difficulties were encountered in placing the material, but the repair exhibited good performance over time. The continuity joints on the U.S. 183/412 bridge over Wolf Creek in Fort Supply, Oklahoma were replaced using UHPC and load tests indicated the repair reestablished continuity.Final Report October 2018 - December 2020N

Major flaws in conflict prevention policies towards Africa : the conceptual deficits of international actors’ approaches and how to overcome them

Current thinking on African conflicts suffers from misinterpretations oversimplification, lack of focus, lack of conceptual clarity, state-centrism and lack of vision). The paper analyses a variety of the dominant explanations of major international actors and donors, showing how these frequently do not distinguish with sufficient clarity between the ‘root causes’ of a conflict, its aggravating factors and its triggers. Specifically, a correct assessment of conflict prolonging (or sustaining) factors is of vital importance in Africa’s lingering confrontations. Broader approaches (e.g. “structural stability”) offer a better analytical framework than familiar one-dimensional explanations. Moreover, for explaining and dealing with violent conflicts a shift of attention from the nation-state towards the local and sub-regional level is needed.

Context Patients with chronic disabling gout refractory to conventional urate-lowering therapy need timely treatment to control disease manifestations related to tissue urate crystal deposition. Pegloticase, monomethoxypoly(ethylene glycol)–conjugated mammalian recombinant uricase, was developed to fulfill this need. Objective To assess the efficacy and tolerability of pegloticase in managing refractory chronic gout. Design, Setting, and Patients Two replicate, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials (C0405 and C0406) were conducted between June 2006 and October 2007 at 56 rheumatology practices in the United States, Canada, and Mexico in patients with severe gout, allopurinol intolerance or refractoriness, and serum uric acid concentration of 8.0 mg/dL or greater. A total of 225 patients participated: 109 in trial C0405 and 116 in trial C0406. Intervention Twelve biweekly intravenous infusions containing either pegloticase 8 mg at each infusion (biweekly treatment group), pegloticase alternating with placebo at successive infusions (monthly treatment group), or placebo (placebo group). Main Outcome Measure Primary end point was plasma uric acid levels of less than 6.0 mg/dL in months 3 and 6. Results In trial C0405 the primary end point was reached in 20 of 43 patients in the biweekly group (47%; 95% CI, 31%-62%), 8 of 41 patients in the monthly group (20%; 95% CI, 9%-35%), and in 0 patients treated with placebo (0/20; 95% CI, 0%-17%; P < .001 and <.04 for comparisons between biweekly and monthly groups vs placebo, respectively). Among patients treated with pegloticase in trial C0406, 16 of 42 in the biweekly group (38%; 95% CI, 24%-54%) and 21 of 43 in the monthly group (49%; 95% CI, 33%-65%) achieved the primary end point; no placebo-treated patients reached the primary end point (0/23; 95% CI, 0%-15%; P = .001 and < .001, respectively). When data in the 2 trials were pooled, the primary end point was achieved in 36 of 85 patients in the biweekly group (42%; 95% CI, 32%-54%), 29 of 84 patients in the monthly group (35%; 95% CI, 24%-46%), and 0 of 43 patients in the placebo group (0%; 95% CI, 0%-8%; P < .001 for each comparison). Seven deaths (4 in patients receiving pegloticase and 3 in the placebo group) occurred between randomization and closure of the study database (February 15, 2008). Conclusion Among patients with chronic gout, elevated serum uric acid level, and allopurinol intolerance or refractoriness, the use of pegloticase 8 mg either every 2 weeks or every 4 weeks for 6 months resulted in lower uric acid levels compared with placebo

Background: Uncertainty persists over the environmental effects of genetically-engineered crops that produce the insecticidal Cry proteins of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). We performed meta-analyses on a modified public database to synthesize current knowledge about the effects of Bt cotton, maize and potato on the abundance and interactions of arthropod non-target functional guilds. Methodology/Principal Findings: We compared the abundance of predators, parasitoids, omnivores, detritivores and herbivores under scenarios in which neither, only the non-Bt crops, or both Bt and non-Bt crops received insecticide treatments. Predators were less abundant in Bt cotton compared to unsprayed non-Bt controls. As expected, fewer specialist parasitoids of the target pest occurred in Bt maize fields compared to unsprayed non-Bt controls, but no significant reduction was detected for other parasitoids. Numbers of predators and herbivores were higher in Bt crops compared to sprayed non-Bt controls, and type of insecticide influenced the magnitude of the difference. Omnivores and detritivores were more abundant in insecticide-treated controls and for the latter guild this was associated with reductions of their predators in sprayed non-Bt maize. No differences in abundance were found when both Bt and non-Bt crops were sprayed. Predator-to-prey ratios were unchanged by either Bt crops or the use of insecticides; ratios were higher in Bt maize relative to the sprayed non-Bt control

The Relationship Between Impulsive Verbal Aggression and Intermittent Explosive Disorder

    No full text
Intermittent explosive disorder (IED) is the sole psychiatric diagnostic category for which aggression is a cardinal symptom. IED focuses on physical aggression, but researchers have argued for the inclusion of verbal aggression (VA) (e.g., arguing, threatening) as a part of the IED criteria set. The utility of VA in identifying clinically relevant aggression, however, is unknown. IED participants were compared to individuals without a marked history of physical aggression, but who report frequent (two or more times a week) VA, and non-aggressive personality-disorder individuals on behavioral and self-report measures of aggression, self-report measures of related constructs (e.g., anger, affective lability), and a clinician assessment of psychosocial impairment. Both the IED and VA groups were more aggressive, angry, and clinically impaired than personality-disorder individuals, while the IED and VA groups did not differ from each other on these measures. These results support the clinical importance of frequent VA for future iterations of the IED criteria set

Acute Tryptophan Depletion and Self-Injurious Behavior in Aggressive Patients and Healthy Volunteers

An association between serotonin (5-HT) activity and self-injurious (i.e., self-aggressive) behavior across the spectrum of lethality (from self-mutilation through completed suicide) is a well-replicated finding. Studies to date, however, have relied on nonexperimental designs to examine this relationship, limiting the causal inferences that can be drawn about the role of 5-HT in self-aggressive behavior. Examine the effect of experimentally altered 5-HT activity (via dietary tryptophan depletion) on self-aggressive behavior among adults with and without intermittent explosive disorder (IED). Individuals with a marked history of aggression, such as those with IED, are characterized by compromised 5-HT and heightened risk for self-aggression, making this a population of interest for examining the proposed relations. IED patients (n = 16) and healthy controls (n = 16) received a tryptophan depletion and a placebo drink on separate days at least 1 week apart. Self-aggressive behavior was assessed on both study days using a well-validated laboratory-based behavioral assessment with self-aggression defined as the intensity of shock self-administered. Tryptophan depletion facilitated selection of more intense shocks, on average, in both groups. Patients with IED were also more self-aggressive overall than healthy volunteers. No IED by drink condition interactions were found. Experimentally lowered 5-HT bioavailability enhances overall self-injurious behavior irrespective of aggression history
